Interferometric Observations of the Nuclear Region of Arp220 at Submillimeter Wavelengths
We report the first submillimeter interferometric observations of an
ultraluminous infrared galaxy. We observed Arp220 in the CO J=3-2 line and
342GHz continuum with the single baseline CSO-JCMT interferometer consisting of
the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) and the James Clerk Maxwell
Telescope (JCMT). Models were fit to the measured visibilities to constrain the
structure of the source. The morphologies of the CO J=3-2 line and 342GHz
continuum emission are similar to those seen in published maps at 230 and
110GHz. We clearly detect a binary source separated by about 1 arcsec in the
east-west direction in the 342GHz continuum. The CO J=3-2 visibility
amplitudes, however, indicate a more complicated structure, with evidence for a
compact binary at some velocities and rather more extended structure at others.
Less than 30% of the total CO J=3-2 emission is detected by the interferometer,
which implies the presence of significant quantities of extended gas. We also
obtained single-dish CO J=2-1, CO J=3-2 and HCN J=4-3 spectra. The HCN J=4-3
spectrum, unlike the CO spectra, is dominated by a single redshifted peak. The
HCN J=4-3/CO J=3-2, HCN J=4-3/HCN J=1-0 and CO J=3-2/2-1 line ratios are larger
in the redshifted (eastern) source, which suggests that the two sources may
have different physical conditions. This result might be explained by the
presence of an intense starburst that has begun to deplete or disperse the
densest gas in the western source, while the eastern source harbors undispersed
high density gas.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 4 Tables. accepted by Ap

GPs are from Mars, Administrators are from Venus: The Role of Misaligned Occupational Dispositions in Inhibiting Mandated Role Change
Research on mandated occupational role change focuses on jurisdictional conflict to explain change failure. Our study of the English National Health Service highlights the role of occupational dispositions in shaping how mandated role change is implemented by members of multiple occupational groups. We find that tension stemming from misaligned dispositions may emerge as members of different occupations interact during their role change implementation efforts. Depending on dispositional responses to tension, change may fail as members of the different occupations avoid interactions. This suggests that effective role change can be elusive even in the initial absence of conflicting occupational interests
Cool gas and dust in M33: Results from the Herschel M33 extended survey (HERM33ES)
We present an analysis of the first space-based far-IR-submm observations of
M 33, which measure the emission from the cool dust and resolve the giant
molecular cloud complexes. With roughly half-solar abundances, M33 is a first
step towards young low-metallicity galaxies where the submm may be able to
provide an alternative to CO mapping to measure their H content. In this
Letter, we measure the dust emission cross-section using SPIRE and
recent CO and \HI\ observations; a variation in is present from a
near-solar neighborhood cross-section to about half-solar with the maximum
being south of the nucleus. Calculating the total H column density from the
measured dust temperature and cross-section, and then subtracting the \HI\
column, yields a morphology similar to that observed in CO. The H/\HI\ mass
ratio decreases from about unity to well below 10% and is about 15% averaged
over the optical disk. The single most important observation to reduce the
potentially large systematic errors is to complete the CO mapping of M 33.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures Accepted for publication in Astronomy and

The Herschel Comprehensive (U)LIRG Emission Survey (HerCULES): CO Ladders, fine structure lines, and neutral gas cooling
(Ultra) Luminous Infrared Galaxies ((U)LIRGs) are objects characterized by
their extreme infrared (8-1000 m) luminosities (L and L). The Herschel Comprehensive ULIRG
Emission Survey (HerCULES; PI van der Werf) presents a representative
flux-limited sample of 29 (U)LIRGs that spans the full luminosity range of
these objects (10). With the \emph{Herschel
Space Observatory}, we observe [CII] 157 m, [OI] 63 m, and [OI] 145
m line emission with PACS, CO J=4-3 through J=13-12, [CI] 370 m, and
[CI] 609 m with SPIRE, and low-J CO transitions with ground-based
telescopes. The CO ladders of the sample are separated into three classes based
on their excitation level. In 13 of the galaxies, the [OI] 63 m emission
line is self absorbed. Comparing the CO excitation to the IRAS 60/100 m
ratio and to far infrared luminosity, we find that the CO excitation is more
correlated to the far infrared colors. We present cooling budgets for the
galaxies and find fine-structure line flux deficits in the [CII], [SiII], [OI],
and [CI] lines in the objects with the highest far IR fluxes, but do not
observe this for CO . In order to study the heating of the
molecular gas, we present a combination of three diagnostic quantities to help
determine the dominant heating source. Using the CO excitation, the CO J=1-0
linewidth, and the AGN contribution, we conclude that galaxies with large CO
linewidths always have high-excitation CO ladders, and often low AGN
contributions, suggesting that mechanical heating is important
HE0107-5240, A Chemically Ancient Star.I. A Detailed Abundance Analysis
We report a detailed abundance analysis for HE0107-5240, a halo giant with
[Fe/H]_NLTE=-5.3. This star was discovered in the course of follow-up
medium-resolution spectroscopy of extremely metal-poor candidates selected from
the digitized Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey. On the basis of
high-resolution VLT/UVES spectra, we derive abundances for 8 elements (C, N,
Na, Mg, Ca, Ti, Fe, and Ni), and upper limits for another 12 elements. A
plane-parallel LTE model atmosphere has been specifically tailored for the
chemical composition of {\he}. Scenarios for the origin of the abundance
pattern observed in the star are discussed. We argue that HE0107-5240 is most
likely not a post-AGB star, and that the extremely low abundances of the
iron-peak, and other elements, are not due to selective dust depletion. The
abundance pattern of HE0107-5240 can be explained by pre-enrichment from a
zero-metallicity type-II supernova of 20-25M_Sun, plus either self-enrichment
with C and N, or production of these elements in the AGB phase of a formerly
more massive companion, which is now a white dwarf. However, significant radial
velocity variations have not been detected within the 52 days covered by our
moderate-and high-resolution spectra. Alternatively, the abundance pattern can
be explained by enrichment of the gas cloud from which HE0107-5240 formed by a
25M_Sun first-generation star exploding as a subluminous SNII, as proposed by
Umeda & Nomoto (2003). We discuss consequences of the existence of HE0107-5240
for low-mass star formation in extremely metal-poor environments, and for
currently ongoing and future searches for the most metal-poor stars in the
Galaxy.Comment: 60 pages, 16 figures. Accepted for publication in Ap
PACS and SPIRE photometer maps of M33: First results of the Herschel M33 extended survey (HERM33ES)
Within the framework of the HERM33ES key project, we are studying the star
forming interstellar medium in the nearby, metal-poor spiral galaxy M33,
exploiting the high resolution and sensitivity of Herschel. We use PACS and
SPIRE maps at 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 micron wavelength, to study the
variation of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with galacto-centric
distance. Detailed SED modeling is performed using azimuthally averaged fluxes
in elliptical rings of 2 kpc width, out to 8 kpc galacto-centric distance.
Simple isothermal and two-component grey body models, with fixed dust
emissivity index, are fitted to the SEDs between 24 and 500 micron using also
MIPS/Spitzer data, to derive first estimates of the dust physical conditions.
The far-infrared and submillimeter maps reveal the branched, knotted spiral
structure of M33. An underlying diffuse disk is seen in all SPIRE maps (250-500
micron). Two component fits to the SEDs agree better than isothermal models
with the observed, total and radially averaged flux densities. The two
component model, with beta fixed at 1.5, best fits the global and the radial
SEDs. The cold dust component clearly dominates; the relative mass of the warm
component is less than 0.3% for all the fits. The temperature of the warm
component is not well constrained and is found to be about 60K plus/minus 10K.
The temperature of the cold component drops significantly from about 24K in the
inner 2 kpc radius to 13K beyond 6 kpc radial distance, for the best fitting
model. The gas-to-dust ratio for beta=1.5, averaged over the galaxy, is higher
than the solar value by a factor of 1.5 and is roughly in agreement with the
subsolar metallicity of M33.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the A&A Herschel

How much charm can PANDA produce?
We consider the production of charmed baryons and mesons in the
proton-antiproton binary reactions at the energies of the future ANDA
experiment. To describe these processes in terms of hadronic interaction
models, one needs strong couplings of the initial nucleons with the
intermediate and final charmed hadrons. Similar couplings enter the models of
binary reactions with strange hadrons. For both charmed and strange hadrons we
employ the strong couplings and their ratios calculated from QCD light-cone sum
rules. In this method finite masses of and quarks are taken into
account. Employing the Kaidalov's quark-gluon string model with Regge poles and
adjusting the normalization of the amplitudes in this model to the calculated
strong couplings, we estimate the production cross section of charmed hadrons.
For it can reach several tens of at
, whereas the cross sections of and pair
production are predicted to be smaller.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures, matches published versio
