Differential geometry with a projection: Application to double field theory
In recent development of double field theory, as for the description of the
massless sector of closed strings, the spacetime dimension is formally doubled,
i.e. from D to D+D, and the T-duality is realized manifestly as a global O(D,D)
rotation. In this paper, we conceive a differential geometry characterized by a
O(D,D) symmetric projection, as the underlying mathematical structure of double
field theory. We introduce a differential operator compatible with the
projection, which, contracted with the projection, can be covariantized and may
replace the ordinary derivatives in the generalized Lie derivative that
generates the gauge symmetry of double field theory. We construct various gauge
covariant tensors which include a scalar and a tensor carrying two O(D,D)

Statistical relational learning with soft quantifiers
Quantification in statistical relational learning (SRL) is either existential or universal, however humans might be more inclined to express knowledge using soft quantifiers, such as ``most'' and ``a few''. In this paper, we define the syntax and semantics of PSL^Q, a new SRL framework that supports reasoning with soft quantifiers, and present its most probable explanation (MPE) inference algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, PSL^Q is the first SRL framework that combines soft quantifiers with first-order logic rules for modelling uncertain relational data. Our experimental results for link prediction in social trust networks demonstrate that the use of soft quantifiers not only allows for a natural and intuitive formulation of domain knowledge, but also improves the accuracy of inferred results
Life-course origins of social inequalities in adult immune cell markers of inflammation in a developing southern Chinese population: the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study
BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic position (SEP) throughout life is associated with cardiovascular disease, though the mechanisms linking these two are unclear. It is also unclear whether there are critical periods in the life course when exposure to better socioeconomic conditions confers advantages or whether SEP exposures accumulate across the whole life course. Inflammation may be a mechanism linking socioeconomic position (SEP) with cardiovascular disease. In a large sample of older residents of Guangzhou, in southern China, we examined the association of life course SEP with inflammation. METHODS: In baseline data on 9,981 adults (>/= 50 years old) from the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study (2006-08), we used multivariable linear regression and model fit to assess the associations of life course SEP at four stages (childhood, early adult, late adult and current) with white blood, granulocyte and lymphocyte cell counts. RESULTS: A model including SEP at all four life stages best explained the association of life course SEP with white blood and granulocyte cell count for men and women, with early adult SEP (education) making the largest contribution. A critical period model best explained the association of life course SEP with lymphocyte count, with sex-specific associations. Early adult SEP was negatively associated with lymphocytes for women. CONCLUSIONS: Low SEP throughout life may negatively impact late adult immune-inflammatory status. However, some aspects of immune-inflammatory status may be sensitive to earlier exposures, with sex-specific associations. The findings were compatible with the hypothesis that in a developing population, upregulation of the gonadotropic axis with economic development may obscure the normally protective effects of social advantage for men.published_or_final_versio
Parisi Phase in a Neuron
Pattern storage by a single neuron is revisited. Generalizing Parisi's
framework for spin glasses we obtain a variational free energy functional for
the neuron. The solution is demonstrated at high temperature and large relative
number of examples, where several phases are identified by thermodynamical
stability analysis, two of them exhibiting spontaneous full replica symmetry
breaking. We give analytically the curved segments of the order parameter
function and in representative cases compute the free energy, the storage

The substellar mass function in the central region of the open cluster Praesepe from deep LBT observations
Studies of the mass function (MF) of open clusters of different ages allow us
to probe the efficiency with which brown dwarfs (BDs) are evaporated from
clusters to populate the field. Surveys in old clusters (age > 100 Myr) do not
suffer so severely from several problems encountered in young clusters, such as
intra-cluster extinction and large uncertainties in BD models. Here we present
the results of a deep photometric survey to study the MF of the old open
cluster Praesepe (age 590 Myr and distance 190 pc), down to a 5 sigma detection
limit at i~25.6 mag (~40M_Jup). We identify 62 cluster member candidates, of
which 40 are substellar, from comparison with predictions from a dusty
atmosphere model. The MF rises from the substellar boundary until ~60M_Jup and
then declines. This is quite different from the form inferred for other open
clusters older than 50 Myr, but seems to be similar to those found in very
young open cluster, whose MFs peak at ~10M_Jup. Either Praesepe really does
have a different MF from other clusters or they had similar initial MFs but
have differed in their dynamical evolution. We further have identified six
foreground T dwarf candidates towards Praesepe, which require follow-up

Generalized Hurst exponent and multifractal function of original and translated texts mapped into frequency and length time series
A nonlinear dynamics approach can be used in order to quantify complexity in
written texts. As a first step, a one-dimensional system is examined : two
written texts by one author (Lewis Carroll) are considered, together with one
translation, into an artificial language, i.e. Esperanto are mapped into time
series. Their corresponding shuffled versions are used for obtaining a "base
line". Two different one-dimensional time series are used here: (i) one based
on word lengths (LTS), (ii) the other on word frequencies (FTS). It is shown
that the generalized Hurst exponent and the derived curves
of the original and translated texts show marked differences. The original
"texts" are far from giving a parabolic function, - in contrast to
the shuffled texts. Moreover, the Esperanto text has more extreme values. This
suggests cascade model-like, with multiscale time asymmetric features as
finally written texts. A discussion of the difference and complementarity of
mapping into a LTS or FTS is presented. The FTS curves are more

The emergence of reciprocally beneficial cooperation
We offer a new and robust model of the emergence and persistence of cooperation when interactions are anonymous, the population is well-mixed, and evolution selects strategies according to material payoffs. The model has a Prisoner’s Dilemma structure, but with an outside option of non-participation. The payoff to mutual cooperation is stochastic; with positive probability, it exceeds that from cheating against a cooperator. Under mild conditions, mutually beneficial cooperation occurs in equilibrium. This is possible because the non-participation option holds down the equilibrium frequency of cheating. Dynamic properties of the model are investigated theoretically and through simulations based on replicator dynamics
Resolving inequalities in care? Reduced mortality in the elderly after acute coronary syndromes. The Myocardial Ischaemia National Audit Project 2003-2010
Aims: To examine age-dependent in-hospital mortality for hospitalization with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) in England and Wales. Methods and results: Mixed-effects regression analysis using data from 616 011 ACS events at 255 hospitals as recorded in the Myocardial Ischemia National Audit Project (MINAP) 2003-2010; 102 415 (16.7%) patients were aged /=85 years. Patients >/=85 years with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) were less likely to receive emergency reperfusion therapy than those /= 85 years, in-hospital mortality reduced from 30.1% in 2003 to 19.4% in 2010 (RR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.38-0.75, P/= 85 years, from 31.5% in 2003 to 20.4% in 2010 (RR = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.42-0.73, P< 0.001). Findings were upheld after multi-level adjustment (base = 2003): male STEMI 2010 OR = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.48-0.75; female STEMI 2010 OR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.42-0.71; male NSTEMI OR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.42-0.60; female NSTEMI OR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.40-0.59. Conclusion: For patients hospitalized with ACS in England and Wales, there have been substantial reductions in in-hospital mortality rates from 2003 to 2010 across all age groups. Scanning-probe spectroscopy of semiconductor donor molecules
Semiconductor devices continue to press into the nanoscale regime, and new
applications have emerged for which the quantum properties of dopant atoms act
as the functional part of the device, underscoring the necessity to probe the
quantum structure of small numbers of dopant atoms in semiconductors[1-3].
Although dopant properties are well-understood with respect to bulk
semiconductors, new questions arise in nanosystems. For example, the quantum
energy levels of dopants will be affected by the proximity of nanometer-scale
electrodes. Moreover, because shallow donors and acceptors are analogous to
hydrogen atoms, experiments on small numbers of dopants have the potential to
be a testing ground for fundamental questions of atomic and molecular physics,
such as the maximum negative ionization of a molecule with a given number of
positive ions[4,5]. Electron tunneling spectroscopy through isolated dopants
has been observed in transport studies[6,7]. In addition, Geim and coworkers
identified resonances due to two closely spaced donors, effectively forming
donor molecules[8]. Here we present capacitance spectroscopy measurements of
silicon donors in a gallium-arsenide heterostructure using a scanning probe
technique[9,10]. In contrast to the work of Geim et al., our data show
discernible peaks attributed to successive electrons entering the molecules.
Hence this work represents the first addition spectrum measurement of dopant
molecules. More generally, to the best of our knowledge, this study is the
first example of single-electron capacitance spectroscopy performed directly

Till death (or an intruder) do us part: intrasexual-competition in a monogamous Primate
Polygynous animals are often highly dimorphic, and show large sex-differences in the degree of intra-sexual competition and aggression, which is associated with biased operational sex ratios (OSR). For socially monogamous, sexually monomorphic species, this relationship is less clear. Among mammals, pair-living has sometimes been assumed to imply equal OSR and low frequency, low intensity intra-sexual competition; even when high rates of intra-sexual competition and selection, in both sexes, have been theoretically predicted and described for various taxa. Owl monkeys are one of a few socially monogamous primates. Using long-term demographic and morphological data from 18 groups, we show that male and female owl monkeys experience intense intra-sexual competition and aggression from solitary floaters. Pair-mates are regularly replaced by intruding floaters (27 female and 23 male replacements in 149 group-years), with negative effects on the reproductive success of both partners. Individuals with only one partner during their life produced 25% more offspring per decade of tenure than those with two or more partners. The termination of the pair-bond is initiated by the floater, and sometimes has fatal consequences for the expelled adult. The existence of floaters and the sporadic, but intense aggression between them and residents suggest that it can be misleading to assume an equal OSR in socially monogamous species based solely on group composition.
