    Remotely controlled mirror of variable geometry for small angle x-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation

    A total-reflecting mirror of 120-cm length was designed and built to focus synchrotron radiation emanating from the electron-positron storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SPEAR). The reflecting surface is of unpolished float glass. The bending and tilt mechanism allows very fine control of the curvature and selectability of the critical angle for wavelengths ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 Å. Elliptical curvature is used to minimize aberrations. The mirror is placed asymmetrically onto the ellipse so as to achieve a tenfold demagnification of the source. The bending mechanism reduces nonelastic deformation (flow) and minimizes strains and stresses in the glass despite its length. Special design features assure stability of the focused image. The mirror reduces the intensity of shorter wavelength harmonics by a factor of approximately 100

    Gain control from beyond the classical receptive field in primate primary visual cortex

    Gain control is a salient feature of information processing throughout the visual system. Heeger (1991, 1992) described a mechanism that could underpin gain control in primary visual cortex (VI). According to this model, a neuron's response is normalized by dividing its output by the sum of a population of neurons, which are selective for orientations covering a broad range. Gain control in this scheme is manifested as a change in the semisaturation constant (contrast gain) of a VI neuron. Here we examine how flanking and annular gratings of the same or orthogonal orientation to that preferred by a neuron presented beyond the receptive field modulate gain in V1 neurons in anesthetized marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). To characterize how gain was modulated by surround stimuli, the Michaelis-Menten equation was fitted to response versus contrast functions obtained under each stimulus condition. The modulation of gain by surround stimuli was modelled best as a divisive reduction in response gain. Response gain varied with the orientation of surround stimuli, but was reduced most when the orientation of a large annular grating beyond the classical receptive field matched the preferred orientation of neurons. The strength of surround suppression did not vary significantly with retinal eccentricity or laminar distribution. In the mannoset, as in macaques (Angelucci et al., 2002a,b), gain control over the sort of distances reported here (up to 10 deg) may be mediated by feedback from extrastriate areas

    Objective: To determine the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of healthcare students and qualified health professionals regarding theinterdisciplinary health worker team.Design: A cross-sectional descriptive study.Setting: Stellenbosch University (Tygerberg Campus) and Tygerberg Academic Hospital, Western Cape.Subjects: The sample (n = 529) consisted of first-year students, final-year students and working professionals in the fields of medicine,dietetics, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech-language and hearing therapy.Outcome measures: Self-administered, face-validated questionnaire.Results: There was an increase in knowledge in the final-year students when compared to the first-year students of their understanding ofeach profession. However, this improvement was not apparent when the working professionals’ understanding was compared to the finalyearstudents. The results indicated an increase in understanding of the scope of practice of allied health sciences (p-value = 0.001), andagreement that the patient would always benefit from an interdisciplinary approach. It was found that better patient prognosis was stronglyassociated with the care provided by an interdisciplinary team. This association increased from first-year students to final-year students(p-value = 0.019). Doctors were considered to be most valuable in the interdisciplinary team. The allied health sciences received comparablevalue ratings. The more advanced the years of experience, the less comfortable participants were to assume some of the roles of anotherdiscipline. Knowledge of the role of the dietitian increased from first-year students to final-year students (p-value = 0.001), but it remainedthe same for the professionals.Conclusion: There was an increase in knowledge and a positive change in the attitudes and perceptions of healthcare students and professionals in accordance with years of experience

    A far-UV survey of three hot, metal-polluted white dwarf stars: WD0455-282, WD0621-376, and WD2211-495

    Using newly obtained high-resolution data (R1×105R\sim{1\times{10}^{5}}) from the \textit{Hubble Space Telescope}, and archival UV data from the \textit{Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer} we have conducted a detailed UV survey of the three hot, metal-polluted white dwarfs WD0455-282, WD0621-376, and WD2211-495. Using bespoke model atmospheres we measured TeffT_{\mathrm{eff}}, log gg, and photospheric abundances for these stars. In conjunction with data from Gaia we measured masses, radii, and gravitational redshift velocities for our sample of objects. We compared the measured photospheric abundances with those predicted by radiative levitation theory, and found that the observed Si abundances in all three white dwarfs, and the observed Fe abundances in WD0621-376 and WD2211-495, were larger than those predicted by an order of magnitude. These findings imply not only an external origin for the metals, but also ongoing accretion, as the metals not supported by radiative levitation would sink on extremely short timescales. We measured the radial velocities of several absorption features along the line of sight to the three objects in our sample, allowing us to determine the velocities of the photospheric and interstellar components along the line of sight for each star. Interestingly, we made detections of circumstellar absorption along the line of sight to WD0455-282 with three velocity components. To our knowledge, this is the first such detection of multi-component circumstellar absorption along the line of sight to a white dwarf.Comment: 19 pages, 23 figures, 8 tables.     An integrated approach for analysing and assessing the performance of virtual learning groups

    Collaborative distance learning involves a variety of elements and factors that have to be considered and measured in order to analyse and assess group and individual performance more effectively and objectively. This paper presents an approach that integrates qualitative, social network analysis (SNA) and quantitative techniques for evaluating online collaborative learning interactions. Integration of various different data sources, tools and techniques provides a more complete and robust framework for group modelling and guarantees a more efficient evaluation of group effectiveness and individual competence. Our research relies on the analysis of a real, long-term, complex collaborative experience, which is initially evaluated in terms of principled criteria and a basic qualitative process. At the end of the experience, the coded student interactions are further analysed through the SNA technique to assess participatory aspects, identify the most effective groups and the most prominent actors. Finally, the approach is contrasted and completed through a statistical technique which sheds more light on the results obtained that far. The proposal draws a well-founded line toward the development of a principled framework for the monitoring and analysis of group interaction and group scaffolding which can be considered a major issue towards the actual application of the CSCL proposals to real classrooms.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
