    Social games in a social network

    We study an evolutionary version of the Prisoner's Dilemma game, played by agents placed in a small-world network. Agents are able to change their strategy, imitating that of the most successful neighbor. We observe that different topologies, ranging from regular lattices to random graphs, produce a variety of emergent behaviors. This is a contribution towards the study of social phenomena and transitions governed by the topology of the community

    Exact results and scaling properties of small-world networks

    We study the distribution function for minimal paths in small-world networks. Using properties of this distribution function, we derive analytic results which greatly simplify the numerical calculation of the average minimal distance, ˉ\bar{\ell}, and its variance, σ2\sigma^2. We also discuss the scaling properties of the distribution function. Finally, we study the limit of large system sizes and obtain some analytic results.Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages, 5 figures included.     A multi-species modelling approach to examine the impact of alternative climate change adaptation strategies on range shifting ability in a fragmented landscape

    An individual-based model of animal dispersal and population dynamics was used to test the effects of different climate change adaptation strategies on species range shifting ability, namely the improvement of existing habitat, restoration of low quality habitat and creation of new habitat. These strategies were implemented on a landscape typical of fragmentation in the United Kingdom using spatial rules to differentiate between the allocation of strategies adjacent to or away from existing habitat patches. The total area being managed in the landscape was set at realistic levels based on recent habitat management trends. Eight species were parameterised to broadly represent different stage structure, population densities and modes of dispersal. Simulations were initialised with the species occupying 20% of the landscape and run for 100 years. As would be expected for a range of real taxa, range shifting abilities were dramatically different. This translated into large differences in their responses to the adaptation strategies. With conservative (0.5%) estimates of the area prescribed for climate change adaptation, few species display noticeable improvements in their range shifting, demonstrating the need for greater investment in future adaptation. With a larger (1%) prescribed area, greater range shifting improvements were found, although results were still species-specific. It was found that increasing the size of small existing habitat patches was the best way to promote range shifting, and that the creation of new stepping stone features, whilst beneficial to some species, did not have such broad effect across different species

    Modulated Scale-free Network in the Euclidean Space

    A random network is grown by introducing at unit rate randomly selected nodes on the Euclidean space. A node is randomly connected to its ii-th predecessor of degree kik_i with a directed link of length \ell using a probability proportional to kiαk_i \ell^{\alpha}. Our numerical study indicates that the network is Scale-free for all values of α>αc\alpha > \alpha_c and the degree distribution decays stretched exponentially for the other values of α\alpha. The link length distribution follows a power law: D()δD(\ell) \sim \ell^{\delta} where δ\delta is calculated exactly for the whole range of values of α\alpha.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.     Relaxation Properties of Small-World Networks

    Recently, Watts and Strogatz introduced the so-called small-world networks in order to describe systems which combine simultaneously properties of regular and of random lattices. In this work we study diffusion processes defined on such structures by considering explicitly the probability for a random walker to be present at the origin.     Shortest paths on systems with power-law distributed long-range connections

    We discuss shortest-path lengths (r)\ell(r) on periodic rings of size L supplemented with an average of pL randomly located long-range links whose lengths are distributed according to P_l \sim l^{-\xpn}. Using rescaling arguments and numerical simulation on systems of up to 10710^7 sites, we show that a characteristic length ξ\xi exists such that (r)r\ell(r) \sim r for r>ξr>\xi. For small p we find that the shortest-path length satisfies the scaling relation \ell(r,\xpn,p)/\xi = f(\xpn,r/\xi). Three regions with different asymptotic behaviors are found, respectively: a) \xpn>2 where θs=1\theta_s=1, b) 1<\xpn<2 where 0<\theta_s(\xpn)<1/2 and, c) \xpn<1 where (r)\ell(r) behaves logarithmically, i.e. θs=0\theta_s=0. The characteristic length ξ\xi is of the form ξpν\xi \sim p^{-\nu} with \nu=1/(2-\xpn) in region b), but depends on L as well in region c).     Search for single top quarks in the tau+jets channel using 4.8 fb1^{-1} of ppˉp\bar{p} collision data

    We present the first direct search for single top quark production using tau leptons. The search is based on 4.8 fb1^{-1} of integrated luminosity collected in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at s\sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with a final state including an isolated tau lepton, missing transverse energy, two or three jets, one or two of them bb tagged. We use a multivariate technique to discriminate signal from background. The number of events observed in data in this final state is consistent with the signal plus background expectation. We set in the tau+jets channel an upper limit on the single top quark cross section of \TauLimObs pb at the 95% C.L. This measurement allows a gain of 4% in expected sensitivity for the observation of single top production when combining it with electron+jets and muon+jets channels already published by the D0 collaboration with 2.3 fb1^{-1} of data. We measure a combined cross section of \SuperCombineXSall pb, which is the most precise measurement to date.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

    Measurement of Z/gamma*+jet+X angular distributions in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV

    We present the first measurements at a hadron collider of differential cross sections for Z+jet+X production in delta phi(Z, jet), |delta y(Z, jet)| and |y_boost(Z, jet)|. Vector boson production in association with jets is an excellent probe of QCD and constitutes the main background to many small cross section processes, such as associated Higgs production. These measurements are crucial tests of the predictions of perturbative QCD and current event generators, which have varied success in describing the data. Using these measurements as inputs in tuning event generators will increase the experimental sensitivity to rare signals.Comment: Published in Physics Letters B 682 (2010), pp. 370-380. 15 pages, 6 figure

    Search for the standard model Higgs boson in tau final states

    We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson using hadronically decaying tau leptons, in 1 inverse femtobarn of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider. We select two final states: tau plus missing transverse energy and b jets, and tau+ tau- plus jets. These final states are sensitive to a combination of associated W/Z boson plus Higgs boson, vector boson fusion and gluon-gluon fusion production processes. The observed ratio of the combined limit on the Higgs production cross section at the 95% C.L. to the standard model expectation is 29 for a Higgs boson mass of 115 GeV.Comment: publication versio
