    Employee Age as a Moderator of the Relationship Between Ambition and Work Role Affect

    Past research has demonstrated a negative relationship between ambition, or the desire to get ahead, and job satisfaction. In the present paper, age was hypothesized to moderate the relationship between ambition and job satisfaction such that the relationship between ambition and satisfaction is more negative for older employees than for younger employees. Three studies, with three criterion variables (promotion satisfaction, extrinsic job satisfaction, overall job satisfaction), were used to test the hypothesis. Results indicated support for the hypothesized interaction. The discussion focuses on the implications of the results for organizational and individual career management strategies

    Links between topography, wind, deflation, lakes and dust: The case of the Bodélé Depression, Chad

    The Bodélé Depression, Chad is the planet's largest single source of dust. Deflation from the Bodélé could be seen as a simple coincidence of two key prerequisites: strong surface winds and a large source of suitable sediment. But here we hypothesise that long term links between topography, winds, deflation and dust ensure the maintenance of the dust source such that these two apparently coincidental key ingredients are connected by land-atmosphere processes with topography acting as the overall controlling agent. We use a variety of observational and numerical techniques, including a regional climate model, to show that: 1) contemporary deflation from the Bodélé is delineated by topography and a surface wind stress maximum; 2) the Tibesti and Ennedi mountains play a key role in the generation of the erosive winds in the form of the Bodélé Low Level Jet (LLJ); 3) enhanced deflation from a stronger Bodélé LLJ during drier phases, for example, the Last Glacial Maximum, was probably sufficient to create the shallow lake in which diatoms lived during wetter phases, such as the Holocene pluvial. Winds may therefore have helped to create the depression in which erodible diatom material accumulated. Instead of a simple coincidence of nature, dust from the world's largest source may result from the operation of long term processes on paleo timescales which have led to ideal conditions for dust generation in the world's largest dust source. Similar processes plausibly operate in other dust hotspots in topographic depressions

    Polycystic ovary syndrome is an endocrine disorder affecting 1 in 10 women. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome can experience co-morbidities, including depressive symptoms. This research explores the experience of living with polycystic ovary syndrome and co-morbidities. Totally, 10 participants with polycystic ovary syndrome took part in Skypeâ„¢ interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. Four themes emerged from the data: change (to life plans and changing nature of condition); support (healthcare professionals, education and relationships); co-morbidities (living with other conditions and depression, self-harm and suicidal ideation) and identity (feminine identity and us and them). The findings highlight the need for screening of women with polycystic ovary syndrome for depressive disorders

    A perturbative analysis of tachyon condensation

    Tachyon condensation in the open bosonic string is analyzed using a perturbative expansion of the tachyon potential around the unstable D25-brane vacuum. Using the leading terms in the tachyon potential, Pad\'e approximants can apparently give the energy of the stable vacuum to arbitrarily good accuracy. Level-truncation approximations up to level 10 for the coefficients in the tachyon potential are extrapolated to higher levels and used to find approximants for the full potential. At level 14 and above, the resulting approximants give an energy less than -1 in units of the D25-brane tension, in agreement with recent level-truncation results by Gaiotto and Rastelli. The extrapolated energy continues to decrease below -1 until reaching a minimum near level 26, after which the energy turns around and begins to approach -1 from below. Within the accuracy of this method, these results are completely consistent with an energy which approaches -1 as the level of truncation is taken to be arbitrarily large.Comment: 8 pages, 3 eps figures, Latex; v2: typo correcte

    Stimulants for enhancement purposes: perceptions attitudes, usage among university students

    Objective: Determine perceptions, attitudes, and usage of non medical prescription stimulants among students at a Midwestern technology focused university. Participants: 241 university students. Methods: Data was collected in March 2015 through an anonymous web survey. A logistic regression model evaluated predictors. T-test was used to evaluate differences between groups. Results: 9.5% had used prescription stimulants without a valid prescription. Primary motives were academic preparation (78%) and recreation (61%). Nicotine use (OR = 8.99, CI 2.40, 33.77, p \u3c .01), peer\u27s suggestion (OR = 6.95, C12.21, 21.84, p \u3c .01), and positive attitudes toward use (OR = 1.99, CI 1.06, 3.72, p \u3c .05) increased odds of nonmedical use. Users and non-users differed in estimations of nonmedical use within peers (t (239) = 3.17, p \u3c .01) and in their field (t (239) = 3.22, p \u3c .01). Conclusions: Administrators should acknowledge student use and develop strategies to address it

    Renormalized Equilibria of a Schloegl Model Lattice Gas

    A lattice gas model for Schloegl's second chemical reaction is described and analyzed. Because the lattice gas does not obey a semi-detailed-balance condition, the equilibria are non-Gibbsian. In spite of this, a self-consistent set of equations for the exact homogeneous equilibria are described, using a generalized cluster-expansion scheme. These equations are solved in the two-particle BBGKY approximation, and the results are compared to numerical experiment. It is found that this approximation describes the equilibria far more accurately than the Boltzmann approximation. It is also found, however, that spurious solutions to the equilibrium equations appear which can only be removed by including effects due to three-particle correlations.Comment: 21 pages, REVTe

    Automorphisms of the affine SU(3) fusion rules

    We classify the automorphisms of the (chiral) level-k affine SU(3) fusion rules, for any value of k, by looking for all permutations that commute with the modular matrices S and T. This can be done by using the arithmetic of the cyclotomic extensions where the problem is naturally posed. When k is divisible by 3, the automorphism group (Z_2) is generated by the charge conjugation C. If k is not divisible by 3, the automorphism group (Z_2 x Z_2) is generated by C and the Altsch\"uler--Lacki--Zaugg automorphism. Although the combinatorial analysis can become more involved, the techniques used here for SU(3) can be applied to other algebras.Comment: 21 pages, plain TeX, DIAS-STP-92-4

    Continuous Human Activity Recognition using a MIMO Radar for Transitional Motion Analysis

    The prompt and accurate recognition of Continuous Human Activity (CHAR) is critical in identifying and responding to health events, particularly fall risk assessment. In this paper, we examine a multi-antenna radar system that can process radar data returns for multiple individuals in an indoor setting, enabling CHAR for multiple subjects. This requires combining spatial and temporal signal processing techniques through micro-Doppler (MD) analysis and high-resolution receive beamforming. We employ delay and sum beamforming to capture MD signatures at three different directions of observation. As MD images may contain multiple activities, we segment the three MD signatures using an STA/LTA algorithm. MD segmentation ensures that each MD segment represents a single human motion activity. Finally, the segmented MD image is resized and processed through a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify motion against each MD segment

    Market Opportunities for Waxy Hulless Barley Cultivars in Australia

    The nutritional value of barley in supplying a western diet with a high fibre, low fat and low GI alternative to other less nutritious grains is beginning to be realised. The availability of agronomically viable waxy hulless barley will enable Australian food processors to utilise this valuable food grain. Processing techniques such as pearling, milling and flaking (rolling) enable barley to be utilised in a variety of food products. The availability of waxy hulless barley will provide food manufacturers with a fast cooking grain (whole or pearled) with excellent pearling and flaking quality with a high content of beta-glucan. This soluble fibre has been shown to lower blood cholesterol in humans thus reducing risk of heart disease. It has also been extracted for numerous end-uses, such as bio-films, wound dressings and nutritional supplements. We have compared the physical grain quality, pearling, cooking, baking and flaking quality of Australian waxy hulless barley with other hulless and covered barleys. The quality attributes of waxy hulless barley will be discussed in the context of potential products and market opportunities. Other end-uses for waxy barley will also be discussed. The South Australian Barley Improvement Program has bred waxy hulless barleys with considerable improvements in agronomy and food quality characteristics compared to older waxy cultivars. New waxy hulless cultivars will provide food processors with an alternative health related ingredient and will benefit farmers by offering a value-added grain to the food market.
