    Faces capture attention: Evidence from Inhibition-of-return

    The human face is a visual pattern of great social and biological importance. While previous studies have shown that attention may be preferentially directed and engaged longer by faces, the current study presents a new methodology to test the notion that faces can capture attention. The present study uses the occurrence of inhibition of return (IOR) as a diagnostic tool to determine the allocation of attention in visual space. Because previous research suggested that IOR at a location in space only occurs after attention has been reflexively moved to that location, the current finding of IOR at the location of the face provides converging support for the claim that faces do have the ability to summon attention.     Preventing Pneumonia Through Early Mobilization of Critically Ill Adults

    The purpose of this critically appraised topic (CAT) is to investigate early mobilization and its effect on preventing pneumonia in adults in the intensive care unit (ICU). The final portfolio contains four research articles from both national and international journals. Study designs included two meta-analyses, one case series, and one retrospective study. All four of the articles specifically described the effects of early mobilization on individuals in the hospital and ICU and showed positive results in reducing the likelihood of developing pneumonia. This CAT will be used to draft new practice guidelines for mentoring new managers in both occupational therapy and physical therapy

    Near real-time input to a propagation model for nowcasting of HF communications with aircraft on polar routes

    There is a need for improved techniques for nowcasting and forecasting (over several hours) HF propagation at northerly latitudes to support airlines operating over the increasingly popular trans-polar routes. In this paper the assimilation of real-time measurements into a propagation model developed by the authors is described, including ionosonde measurements and Total Electron Content (TEC) measurements to define the main parameters of the ionosphere. The effects of D-region absorption in the polar cap and auroral regions are integrated with the model through satellite measurements of the flux of energetic solar protons (>1 MeV) and the X-ray flux in the 0.1-0.8 nm band, and ground-based magnetometer measurements which form the Kp and Dst indices of geomagnetic activity. The model incorporates various features (e.g. convecting patches of enhanced plasma density) of the polar ionosphere that are, in particular, responsible for off-great circle propagation and lead to propagation at times and frequencies not expected from on-great circle propagation alone. The model development is supported by the collection of HF propagation measurements over several paths within the polar cap, crossing the auroral oval, and along the mid-latitude trough

    A simple and robust method for connecting small-molecule drugs using gene-expression signatures

    Interaction of a drug or chemical with a biological system can result in a gene-expression profile or signature characteristic of the event. Using a suitably robust algorithm these signatures can potentially be used to connect molecules with similar pharmacological or toxicological properties. The Connectivity Map was a novel concept and innovative tool first introduced by Lamb et al to connect small molecules, genes, and diseases using genomic signatures [Lamb et al (2006), Science 313, 1929-1935]. However, the Connectivity Map had some limitations, particularly there was no effective safeguard against false connections if the observed connections were considered on an individual-by-individual basis. Further when several connections to the same small-molecule compound were viewed as a set, the implicit null hypothesis tested was not the most relevant one for the discovery of real connections. Here we propose a simple and robust method for constructing the reference gene-expression profiles and a new connection scoring scheme, which importantly allows the valuation of statistical significance of all the connections observed. We tested the new method with the two example gene-signatures (HDAC inhibitors and Estrogens) used by Lamb et al and also a new gene signature of immunosuppressive drugs. Our testing with this new method shows that it achieves a higher level of specificity and sensitivity than the original method. For example, our method successfully identified raloxifene and tamoxifen as having significant anti-estrogen effects, while Lamb et al's Connectivity Map failed to identify these. With these properties our new method has potential use in drug development for the recognition of pharmacological and toxicological properties in new drug candidates.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, and 2 tables; supplementary data supplied as a ZIP fil

    Propagation of HF radio waves over northerly paths: measurements,simulation and systems aspects

    Large deviations in the direction of arrival of ionospherically propagating radio signals from the Great Circle Path (GCP) have serious implications for the planning and operation of communications and radiolocation systems operating within the HF-band. Very large deviations are particularly prevalent in the polar and sub-auroral regions where signals often arrive at the receiver with bearings displaced from the great circle direction by up to ±100° or more. Measurements made over several paths are presented in this paper, and the principle causes of off-great circle propagation outlined. Significant progress has been made in modelling the propagation effects and work is now in hand to incorporate the results into tools to aid the planning and operation of HF radio systems operating at northerly latitudes

    Output coupling of a Bose-Einstein condensate formed in a TOP trap

    Two distinct mechanisms are investigated for transferring a pure 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate in the F = 2, mF = 2 state into a mixture of condensates in all the mF states within the F = 2 manifold. Some of these condensates remain trapped whilst others are output coupled in the form of an elementary pulsed atom laser. Here we present details of the condensate preparation and results of the two condensate output coupling schemes. The first scheme is a radio frequency technique which allows controllable transfer into available mF states, and the second makes use of Majorana spin flips to equally populate all the manifold sub-states.Comment: 12 Pages, 5 Figures, submitted to J.     QTL for seed protein and amino acids in the Benning × Danbaekkong soybean population

    Soybean, rather than nitrogen-containing forages, is the primary source of quality protein in feed formulations for domestic swine, poultry, and dairy industries. As a sole dietary source of protein, soybean is deficient in the amino acids lysine (Lys), threonine (Thr), methionine (Met), and cysteine (Cys). Increasing these amino acids would benefit the feed industry. The objective of the present study was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with crude protein (cp) and amino acids in the ‘Benning’ × ‘Danbaekkong’ population. The population was grown in five southern USA environments. Amino acid concentrations as a fraction of cp (Lys/cp, Thr/cp, Met/cp, Cys/cp, and Met + Cys/cp) were determined by near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy. Four QTL associated with the variation in crude protein were detected on chromosomes (Chr) 14, 15, 17, and 20, of which, a QTL on Chr 20 explained 55 % of the phenotypic variation. In the same chromosomal region, QTL for Lys/cp, Thr/cp, Met/cp, Cys/cp and Met + Cys/cp were detected. At these QTL, the Danbaekkong allele resulted in reduced levels of these amino acids and increased protein concentration. Two additional QTL for Lys/cp were detected on Chr 08 and 20, and three QTL for Thr/cp on Chr 01, 09, and 17. Three QTL were identified on Chr 06, 09 and 10 for Met/cp, and one QTL was found for Cys/cp on Chr 10. The study provides information concerning the relationship between crude protein and levels of essential amino acids and may allow for the improvement of these traits in soybean using marker-assisted selection
