    Perspectives on Place-Based Local Leadership Programs: Fostering Leadership and Community Attachment in Youths

    Leadership development, service learning, place-based education, and economic revitalization are topics relevant to Extension. We performed an evaluation to determine whether a place-based leadership program in Clermont County, Ohio, helps students develop leadership skills and encourages their return to the community. Program evaluation data collected via a web-based survey indicated that 80% of youths planned to return to the area to live and work, an action that would contribute to revitalization of the community. Extension professionals can use findings from our evaluation as a basis for improving existing programs, structuring new youth leadership initiatives, and communicating the value of place-based youth leadership programs to stakeholders

    Iron-Line Emission as a Probe of Bardeen-Petterson Accretion Disks

    In this work we show that Bardeen-Petterson accretion disks can exhibit unique, detectable features in relativistically broadened emission line profiles. Some of the unique characteristics include inverted line profiles with sharper red horns and softer blue horns and even profiles with more than 2 horns from a single rest-frame line. We demonstrate these points by constructing a series of synthetic line profiles using simple two-component disk models. We find that the resultant profiles are very sensitive to the two key parameters one would like to constrain, namely the Bardeen-Petterson transition radius r_{BP} and the relative tilt \beta between the two disk components over a range of likely values [10 < r_{BP}/(GM/c^2) < 40 ; 15deg < \beta < 45deg]. We use our findings to show that some of the ``extra'' line features observed in the spectrum of the Seyfert-I galaxy MCG--6-30-15 may be attributable to a Bardeen-Petterson disk structure. Similarly, we apply our findings to two likely Bardeen-Petterson candidate Galactic black holes - GRO J1655-40 and XTE J1550-564. We provide synthetic line profiles of these systems using observationally constrained sets of parameters.     The impact of out-of-hours admission on patient mortality: longitudinal analysis in a tertiary acute hospital

    Background Emergency hospital admission at weekends is associated with an increased risk of mortality. Previous studies have been limited to examining single years and assessing day – not time – of admission. We used an enhanced longitudinal dataset to estimate the ‘weekend effect’ over time and the effect of night-time admission on the mortality rate. Method We examined 246,350 emergency spells from a large teaching hospital in England between April 2004 and March 2014. Outcomes included 7-day, 30-day and in-hospital mortality rates. We conducted probit regressions to estimate the impact of two key predictors on mortality: i) admission at weekends (7.00 pm Friday to 6.59 am Monday); ii) night-time admission (7.00 pm to 6.59 am). Logistic regressions were estimated to produce odds ratios. Results Crude 30-day mortality rate decreased from 6.6% in 2004/05 to 5.2% in 2013/14. Adjusted mortality risk was elevated for all out-of-hours periods. The highest risk was associated with admission at weekend night-times: 30-day mortality increased by 0.6 percentage points (adjusted OR: 1.168), 7-day mortality by 0.4 percentage points (adjusted OR: 1.225), and in-hospital mortality by 0.5 percentage points (adjusted OR: 1.140) compared with admission on weekday day-times. Weekend night-time admission was associated with increased mortality risk in 9 out of 10 years, but this was only statistically significant (P≤ 0.05) in 5 out of 10 years. Conclusions There is an increased risk of mortality for patients admitted as emergencies both at weekends and during the night-time. These effects are additive, so that the greatest risk of mortality occurs in patients admitted during the night at weekends. This increased risk appears to be consistent over time, but the effects are small and are not statistically significant in individual hospitals in every year

    Organizational Participation in Open Communities: Conceptual Framing and Early Findings

    As design and development evolves within open communities, new affordances present new possibilities andorganizations must balance ‘contributions to’ and ‘differentiation from’ the open community for reasons of cost, resourcemanagement, and time to market. Organizational participation in open communities is timely in light of recent analysesby the Linux Foundation indicating that 75% of kernel contributions are by paid developers. In this proposal, we build onprinciples of public sharing and collaboration using the Linux open-source community as our basis for understandingopen communities (Fitzgerald, 2006). The focus of this project is why organizations participate with open communitiesand how they participate with open communities. We apply action research as a methodological approach within which aqualitative field study will be conducted (Chiasson et al., 2009). Action research supports our dual goal of developing asolution to a practical problem which is of value to the people with whom we are working, while at the same timedeveloping theoretical knowledge of value to an academic community involved in research and pedagogy (Mathiassen etal., 2009). We found organizational participation to be primarily derived from the leveraged support, contribution to, anddifferentiation from open communities

    The Domestication of Open Source

    Open source is becoming domesticated through the advancement of organizational practices, foundation sponsorships, and communal standards. Over the past ten years, organizational participation with open source has become a viable business proposition, opening new paths for service management, innovation discovery, and product development. Traditionally, engagement with open source has recognized how organizations leverage resources from an open source community into new practice. Such recognition assumes stabilizing efforts located within organizations to address open source community complexities. However, recent trends have led organizations to advance durability into open source communities in efforts to stabilize practices within communities themselves. In essence, domesticating open source. In this research-in-progress we provide a theoretical frame of risk, agency, and technology-in-practice to understand open source domestication and reveal it roots, trajectories, and evolutionary nature.     Modeling Surface and Subsurface Pesticide Transport Under Three Field Conditions Using PRZM-3 and GLEAMS

    Contaminant transport models should be evaluated over a wide range of conditions to determine their limitations. The models PRZM and GLEAMS have been evaluated many times, but few studies are available in which predicted movement in runoff and percolate were simultaneously evaluated against field data. Studies of this type are essential because pesticide leaching and runoff are mutually dependent processes. For this reason, PRZM-3 and GLEAMS were evaluated for their ability to predict metribuzin concentrations in runoff, sediment, subsurface soil, and pan lysimeters under three field conditions (yard waste compost amended, no-till, and conventional-till) on a Lowell silt loam soil. Sensitive input parameters were either site specific (climatic, soil, and chemical) or calibrated (K-factor, C-factor, curve number). In general, both models under-predicted metribuzin concentration in runoff water, runoff sediment, subplow layer soil (15-75 cm), and pan lysimeter water (75 cm). Contrary to field data, both models predicted that a large percentage (\u3e 50%) of metribuzin would move below the “mixing zone” (top 1 cm) during the first rainfall event after application. Relatively little metribuzin was predicted to move beyond the plow layer (top 15 cm) into the pan lysimeters or subsurface soil throughout the simulation period, possibly due to the lack of a macropore component in the models. High metribuzin concentrations in sediment (field data) indicated that relatively little metribuzin moved below the “mixing zone”, possibly because of hysteresis but much of the metribuzin that did move was quickly transported into the pan lysimeters, probably due to macropore flow. GLEAMS more accurately predicted pesticide concentration in sediment and PRZM predicted subsurface soil concentration somewhat more accurately than GLEAMS. Little difference in accuracy was detected between models on metribuzin concentration in runoff or metribuzin concentration in percolate. Although both models generally under-predicted metribuzin concentration in runoff, runoff transport (mass of metribuzin in runoff) for the study period was over-predicted by both models which emphasizes the importance of accurately predicting herbicide concentration and runoff volume soon after application when the surface pesticide concentrations are highest

    Risk Mitigation in Corporate Participation with Open Source Communities: Protection and Compliance in an Open Source Supply Chain

    Open source communities exist in large part through increasing participation from for-profit corporations. The balance between the seemingly conflicting ideals of open source communities and corporations creates a number of complex challenges for both. In this paper, we focus on corporate risk mitigation and the mandates on corporate participation in open source communities in light of open source license requirements. In response to these challenges, we aim to understand risk mitigation options within the dialectic of corporate participation with open source communities. Rather than emphasizing risk mitigation as ad hoc and emergent process focused on bottom lines and shareholder interests, our interest is in formalized instruments and project management processes that can help corporations mitigate risks associated with participation in open source communities through shared IT projects. Accordingly, we identify two key risk domains that corporations must be attendant to: property protection and compliance. In addition, we discuss risk mitigation sourcing, arguing that tools and processes for mitigating open source project risk do not stem solely from a corporation or solely from an open source community. Instead they originate from the interface between the two and can be paired in a complementary fashion in an overall project management process of risk mitigation.     The bolometric luminosity of type 2 AGN from extinction-corrected [OIII]: no evidence for Eddington-limited sources

    There have been recent claims that a significant fraction of type 2 AGN accrete close or even above the Eddington limit. In type 2 AGN the bolometric luminosity (L_b) is generally inferred from the [OIII] emission line luminosity (L_OIII). The key issue, in order to estimate the bolometric luminosity in these AGN, is therefore to know the bolometric correction to be applied to L_OIII. A complication arises from the fact that the observed L_OIII is affected by extinction, likely due to dust within the narrow line region. The extinction-corrected [OIII] luminosity (L^c_OIII) is a better estimator of the nuclear luminosity than L_OIII. However, so far only the bolometric correction to be applied to the uncorrected L_OIII has been evaluated. This paper is devoted to estimate the bolometric correction C_OIII=L_b/L^c_OIII in order to derive the Eddington ratios for the type 2 AGN in a sample of SDSS objects. We have collected from the literature 61 sources with reliable estimate of both L^c_OIII and X-ray luminosities (L_X). To estimate C_OIII, we combined the observed correlation between L^c_OIII and L_X with the X-ray bolometric correction. We found, contrary to previous studies, a linear correlation between L^c_OIII and L_X. We estimated C_OIII using the luminosity-dependent X-ray bolometric correction of Marconi et al. (2004), and we found a mean value of C_OIII in the luminosity ranges log L_OIII=38-40, 40-42, and 42-44 of 87, 142 and 454 respectively. We used it to calculate the Eddington ratio distribution of type 2 SDSS AGN at 0.3<z<0.4 and we found that these sources are not accreting near their Eddington limit, contrary to previous claims.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Compton Scattering of Fe K alpha Lines in Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables

    Compton scattering of X-rays in the bulk flow of the accretion column in magnetic cataclysmic variables (mCVs) can significantly shift photon energies. We present Monte Carlo simulations based on a nonlinear algorithm demonstrating the effects of Compton scattering on the H-like, He-like and neutral Fe K alpha lines produced in the post-shock region of the accretion column. The peak line emissivities of the photons in the post-shock flow are taken into consideration and frequency shifts due to Doppler effects are also included. We find that line profiles are most distorted by Compton scattering effects in strongly magnetized mCVs with a low white dwarf mass and high mass accretion rate and which are viewed at an oblique angle with respect to the accretion column. The resulting line profiles are most sensitive to the inclination angle. We have also explored the effects of modifying the accretion column width and using a realistic emissivity profile. We find that these do not have a significant overall effect on the resulting line profiles. A comparison of our simulated line spectra with high resolution Chandra/HETGS observations of the mCV GK Per indicates that a wing feature redward of the 6.4 keV line may result from Compton recoil near the base of the accretion column.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 10 pages with 8 figure

    Design of 11-Residue Peptides with Unusual Biophysical Properties: Induced Secondary Structure in the Absence of Water

    AbstractA series of oligopeptides with β-forming and adhesive properties, were synthesized and analyzed for adhesion shear strength, secondary structure, and association properties. The sequences contained related hydrophobic core segments varying in length from 5 to 12 residues and flanked by di- or tri-lysine segments. Three remarkable peptides consisting of just 11 residues with hydrophobic core sequences of FLIVI, IGSII, and IVIGS flanked by three lysine residues gave the highest dry adhesion shear strength and displayed unusual biophysical properties in the presence and absence of water. KKKFLIVIKKK had its highest adhesion strength at 2% (w/v) at pH 12.0 and showed the highest adhesion strength after exposure to water (water resistance). Both KKKIGSIIKKK and KKKIVIGSKKK, at 4% (w/v) at pH 12.0, displayed nearly identical dry shear strength values to that with the FLIVI core sequence. The peptide with IGSII core, however, displayed a lower water resistance and the latter, IVIGS, showed no water resistance, completely delaminating upon soaking in water. These are the smallest peptides with adhesive properties reported to date and show remarkable adhesion strength even at lower concentrations of 0.2% (w/v), which corresponds to 1.6mM. The FLIVI containing peptide adopted a β-sheet secondary structure in water while the IGSII- and IVIGS-containing sequences folded similarly only in the absence of water. Analytical ultracentrifugation studies showed that when the FLIVI sequence adopts β-structure in aqueous solution, it associates into a large molecular weight assembly.
