The AF structure of non commutative toroidal Z/4Z orbifolds

For any irrational theta and rational number p/q such that q|qtheta-p|<1, a projection e of trace q|qtheta-p| is constructed in the the irrational rotation algebra A_theta that is invariant under the Fourier transform. (The latter is the order four automorphism U mapped to V, V mapped to U^{-1}, where U, V are the canonical unitaries generating A_theta.) Further, the projection e is approximately central, the cut down algebra eA_theta e contains a Fourier invariant q x q matrix algebra whose unit is e, and the cut downs eUe, eVe are approximately inside the matrix algebra. (In particular, there are Fourier invariant projections of trace k|qtheta-p| for k=1,...,q.) It is also shown that for all theta the crossed product A_theta rtimes Z_4 satisfies the Universal Coefficient Theorem. (Z_4 := Z/4Z.) As a consequence, using the Classification Theorem of G. Elliott and G. Gong for AH-algebras, a theorem of M. Rieffel, and by recent results of H. Lin, we show that A_theta rtimes Z_4 is an AF-algebra for all irrational theta in a dense G_delta.Comment: 35 page

Restoring Trust Relationships within Collaborative Digital Preservation Federations

4th International Conference on Open RepositoriesThis presentation was part of the session : Conference PresentationsDate: 2009-05-19 01:00 PM ā€“ 02:30 PMThe authors extend their process for creating and establishing trust relationships to include steps for restoring trust relationships after catastrophic events. Part of this model will include best practices for business continuity relationships and will integrate trust models from Holland and Lockett (1998) and Ring and Van de Ven (1994) and how they can be applied to a process for trust restoration after periods of disaster or critical data loss. These models provide key frameworks for understanding how trust can be utilized for collaborative start points as well as for collaborative recovery points from physical natural disaster or critical data loss

An Examination of Six ā€œNutting Stonesā€ from East Texas for Plant Phytoliths

    Get PDF
In this article we report on an examination of six nutting stones from East Texas sites as well as an exploratory examination of their possible functions. ā€œNutting stonesā€ have long been presumed to have been used prehistorically for crushing nuts such as hickory, etc. as foodstuffs. In fact Davis described them as being: A small flat stone, usually made of limestone, sandstone or other sedimentary types of rock which could be carried by hand. The flat surface may have one or more ground or pecked cups of various sizes, shapes and depth. It is postulated that they were used for various purposes such as cracking nuts, mixing pigments, milling herbs and seeds, or as an anvil for flint knapping. While Davis is an avocationalist and numerous professional archaeologists have dealt with nutting stones, we know of neither a more complete definition nor any other effort to empirically test for their function

    Assumptions of Qualitative Research Methods

    Get PDF
Many characteristics make up the collective term of qualitative research, Methods used specify a certain framework in which researchers operate, Within this framework, there are two major assumptions in which I believe take precedence, Inductive reasoning and topic specificity are the two characteristics that I believe define qualitative research, Inductive reasoning is the epitome of qualitative research design. Researchers seek information out of the data that is gathered; they do not proceed to a project looking for specific findings, Maxwell (1996) states that qualitative research allows researchers to examine explanations and data - not to prove a self-fulfilling prophecy, Inductive reasoning looks for meaning from within the subjects, Researchers have historically attempted to objectify the subjective state of the their subjects, Instead, using an inductive approach, they can genuinely learn from their subjects. They are empathetic and reflective. Their job is to learn how their subjects think (Biklen & Bogdan, 1998)

Vibrational interference of Raman and high-harmonic generation pathways

Experiments have shown that the internal vibrational state of a molecule can affect the intensity of high harmonic light generated from that molecule. This paper presents a model which explains this modulation in terms of interference between different vibrational states occurring during the high harmonic process. In addition, a semiclassical model of the continuum electron propagation is developed which connects with rigorous treatments of the electron-ion scattering
