    A QUALITATIVE STUDY OF TRANSGENDER CHILDREN WITH EARLY SOCIAL TRANSITION: PARENT PERSPECTIVES AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS

    Social transition for young children is a field fraught with conflicting perspectives and limited research. This paper examines experiences of families allowing social transition for young children from the parent’s perspectives and introduces practical ideas from our clinical experiences. Participants were parents of children ages 4 to 9 with gender dysphoria (n=15) in British Columbia, Canada. The children ranged in gender identity and had been under the care of the gender health clinic for a period of one to four years. Participants were self-referred the study and participated in a focus group to describe experiences allowing social transition. Results were transcribed and analyzed using constant comparison qualitative method. Five major themes emerge from this study, including positive changes in the relationship between the child and the parent/family, improvement in social relationship, parent flexibility in the relationship between the child and the parent/family, improvement in social relationship, parent flexibility and preparation for change, and expansion of different gender roles and expressions. Findings indicate social transition for young children results in positive changes in the mood of the child and the child-caregiver relationship as well as improvement in general social relationships. Different clinical implications of permitting early social transition on social development are discussed.&nbsp

    An imaging spectrometer for microgravity application

    Flame structure is the result of complex interaction of mechanisms operating in both unwanted fires and controlled combustion systems. The scientific study of gas-jet diffusion flames in reduced-gravity environment is of interest because the effects of buoyancy on flow entrainment and acceleration are lessened. Measurements of flames have been restricted to cinematography, thermocouples, and radiometers. SSG, Inc. is developing an MWIR imaging spectrometer (MIS) for microgravity flame measurements. The device will be delivered to NASA Lewis at the end of this project to demonstrate flame measurements in the laboratory. With proper modifications, the MIS can be used to monitor a gas-jet flame under microgravity on a NASA Learjet or DC-9

    Excerpt from the full-text article: Black people, like other people, grow up in families. This simple observation is a suprise to people who are accustomed to associate the experiences of Black people with slavery, crime, delinquency, civil disorders. The Black historian, Benjamin Quarles (1967) has observed that white America tends to have a distorted perspective on Black life, and the fact of Blacks growing up in a family is a fresh approach to the understanding of socio-cultural aspects of growing up Black (cf. Billingsley, 1968). The family is society\u27s primary context for meeting a child\u27s biological needs, directing his development into an integrated person living in a society, and transmitting to him its cultures (Lidz, 1974). It is also the setting in which a child\u27s basic trust, autonomy, initiative and sense of industry toward life (cf. Erikson, 1959) are developed. The interaction between societal needs and individual wants (cf. Parsons and Bales, 1955; Winch, 1971) or between the demands of super ego and id defines the family as a mediational setting even though its structure is presently in transition (cf. Skolnick and Skolnick, 1971). Any attempt at studies of child development as an autonomous process, independent of the family, distorts as much as it simplifies the understanding of the growth process

    The excited hadron spectrum in lattice QCD using a new method of estimating quark propagation

    Progress in determining the spectrum of excited baryons and mesons in lattice QCD is described. Large sets of carefully-designed hadron operators have been studied and their effectiveness in facilitating the extraction of excited-state energies is demonstrated.     Increasing Passersby Engagement with Public Large Interactive Displays: A Study of Proxemics and Conation

To better understand how designers can mitigate these issues, we conducted a field experiment that compared how different visual cues impacted engagement with a public display. The deployed interfaces were designed to progressively reveal more information about the display and entice interaction through the use of visual content designed to evoke direct or indirect conation (the mental faculty related to purpose or will to perform an action), and different ani- mation triggers (random or proxemic). Our results show that random triggers were more effective than proxemic triggers at overcoming display and interaction blindness. Our study of conation – the first we are aware of – found that “conceptual” visuals designed to evoke indirect conation were also useful in attracting people’s attention.Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canad

    Separation and identification of indene-C70 bisadduct isomers.

    Following an initial work on the isolation of a single geometric isomer from an indene-C70 bisadduct (IC70BA) mixture, we report the full fractionation and identification of the bisadduct species in the material. Eleven fractions of IC70BA isomers were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography. A number of fractions contained relatively pure isomer species and their configuration were deduced using a variety of analytical techniques including (1)H and (13)C NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties and the organic solar cell device performance were investigated for fractions where a reasonable quantity of sample could be isolated

    Secure Mobile Payments Without Network Connectivity

    Mobile payments depend on the availability of internet connectivity, e.g., to enable a centralized service to authenticate a payment. This disclosure describes techniques to enable peer-to-peer mobile payments in the absence of a network. A user has an initial amount, referred to as the balance, that is transferred to their mobile device from a balance provider, e.g., a financial institution. The balance is digitally signed by both the user and the balance provider. To transact in the absence of a network, peer users perform a contactless payment as follows. The receiver of funds verifies the availability of funds by examining the prior, authenticated, transaction records of the sender. A transaction record including the transaction amount is created and made immutable and secure using cryptographic techniques. When either the sender or receiver regains network connectivity, the transaction is settled with the balance provider. Double-spend attempts by a malicious sender are forestalled by enabling secure maintenance of the true balance on a sender’s device (even in the absence of a network), and by enabling the receiver to settle with the sender’s balance provider on the basis of an authenticated transaction record

    BackgroundPatients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are at increased risk of atherosclerosis, even after accounting for traditional risk factors. High levels of leptin and low levels of adiponectin are associated with both atherosclerosis and immunomodulatory functions in the general population.ObjectiveTo examine the association between these adipokines and subclinical atherosclerosis in SLE, and also with other known inflammatory biomarkers of atherosclerosis.MethodsCarotid ultrasonography was performed in 250 women with SLE and 122 controls. Plasma leptin and adiponectin levels were measured. Lipoprotein a (Lp(a)), oxidised phospholipids on apoB100 (OxPL/apoB100), paraoxonase, apoA-1 and inflammatory high-density lipoprotein (HDL) function were also assessed.ResultsLeptin levels were significantly higher in patients with SLE than in controls (23.7±28.0 vs 13.3±12.9 ng/ml, p<0.001). Leptin was also higher in the 43 patients with SLE with plaque than without plaque (36.4±32.3 vs 20.9±26.4 ng/ml, p=0.002). After multivariate analysis, the only significant factors associated with plaque in SLE were leptin levels in the highest quartile (≥29.5 ng/ml) (OR=2.8, p=0.03), proinflammatory HDL (piHDL) (OR=12.8, p<0.001), age (OR=1.1, p<0.001), tobacco use (OR=7.7, p=0.03) and hypertension (OR=3.0, p=0.01). Adiponectin levels were not significantly associated with plaque in our cohort. A significant correlation between leptin and piHDL function (p<0.001), Lp(a) (p=0.01) and OxPL/apoB100 (p=0.02) was also present.ConclusionsHigh leptin levels greatly increase the risk of subclinical atherosclerosis in SLE, and are also associated with an increase in inflammatory biomarkers of atherosclerosis such as piHDL, Lp(a) and OxPL/apoB100. High leptin levels may help to identify patients with SLE at risk of atherosclerosis
