Bold Responses to Inhibition in Cannabis Using Adolescents and Emerging Adults
Cannabis use has been associated with increased blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) responses absent of behavioral deficits during a response inhibition task compared to controls. We investigated whether gender and cannabis use result in differences in BOLD responses and behavioral performance during a Go-NoGo task. Participants included eighty-three 16-26 year olds (MJ=36, Controls=46). An emotion based Go-NoGo task required participants to inhibit their response during a “neutral” face. A whole-brain analysis looked at differences between cannabis group, gender, and their interaction. Significant increased BOLD responses were observed in cannabis users compared to controls in the left frontal cortex, left cingulate cortex, and the left thalamus during correct response inhibitions. There were no significant differences on task performance or group by gender interactions. Supporting previous research, cannabis users showed increased BOLD responses in core areas associated with response inhibition during a Go-NoGo task further elucidating the relationships between cannabis and brain-behavior

Inhibition of the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier protects from excitotoxic neuronal death.
Glutamate is the dominant excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain, but under conditions of metabolic stress it can accumulate to excitotoxic levels. Although pharmacologic modulation of excitatory amino acid receptors is well studied, minimal consideration has been given to targeting mitochondrial glutamate metabolism to control neurotransmitter levels. Here we demonstrate that chemical inhibition of the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) protects primary cortical neurons from excitotoxic death. Reductions in mitochondrial pyruvate uptake do not compromise cellular energy metabolism, suggesting neuronal metabolic flexibility. Rather, MPC inhibition rewires mitochondrial substrate metabolism to preferentially increase reliance on glutamate to fuel energetics and anaplerosis. Mobilizing the neuronal glutamate pool for oxidation decreases the quantity of glutamate released upon depolarization and, in turn, limits the positive-feedback cascade of excitotoxic neuronal injury. The finding links mitochondrial pyruvate metabolism to glutamatergic neurotransmission and establishes the MPC as a therapeutic target to treat neurodegenerative diseases characterized by excitotoxicity
Effective low-energy theory for correlated carbon nanotubes
The low-energy theory for single-wall carbon nanotubes including Coulomb
interactions is derived and analyzed. It describes two fermion chains without
interchain hopping but coupled in a specific way by the interaction. The
strong-coupling properties are studied by bosonization, and consequences for

Accretion in the Rho-Oph pre-main sequence stars
The aim of this paper is to provide a measurement of the mass accretion rate
in a large, complete sample of objects in the core of the star forming region
Rho-Oph. The sample includes most of the objects (104 out of 111) with evidence
of a circumstellar disk from mid-infrared photometry; it covers a stellar mass
range from about 0.03 to 3 Msun and it is complete to a limiting mass of ~0.05
Msun. We used J and K-band spectra to derive the mass accretion rate of each
object from the intensity of the hydrogen recombination lines, Pab or Brg. For
comparison, we also obtained similar spectra of 35 diskless objects. The
results show that emission in these lines is only seen in stars with disks, and
can be used as an indicator of accretion. However, the converse does not hold,
as about 50% of our disk objects do not have detectable line emission. The
measured accretion rates show a strong correlation with the mass of the central
object (Macc ~ Mstar^1.8+-0.2) and a large spread, of two orders of magnitude
at least, for any interval of Mstar. A comparison with existing data for Taurus
shows that the objects in the two regions have similar behaviour, at least for
objects more massive than ~0.1Msun. The implications of these results are

Adolescent Experiences with Self-Asphyxial Behaviors and Problematic Drinking in Emerging Adulthood
Self-asphyxial behavior to achieve a euphoric high (The Choking Game; TCG), occurs most often during early adolescence. Participants in TCG often engage in other risky behaviors. This study investigated the relationship between prior experience with TCG and problematic drinking behaviors in emerging adulthood. Emerging adults, 18 to 25 years old (N = 1248), 56% female, and 78% Caucasian completed an online survey regarding knowledge of and prior engagement in TCG and current drinking behaviors. Participants who personally engaged in TCG during childhood/adolescence or were familiar with TCG reported significantly more problematic drinking behaviors during emerging adulthood. Those present when others engaged in TCG but resisted participation themselves reported significantly less current problematic drinking behaviors than those who participated, but significantly more current problematic drinking behaviors than those never present. Emerging adults with increased social familiarity with TCG during adolescence endorsed greater problematic drinking behaviors. Results suggest resistance skills may generalize across time/activities
