Absolute Magnitudes and Colors of RR Lyrae stars in DECam Passbands from Photometry of the Globular Cluster M5
We characterize the absolute magnitudes and colors of RR Lyrae stars in the
globular cluster M5 in the ugriz filter system of the Dark Energy Camera
(DECam). We provide empirical Period-Luminosity (P-L) relationships in all 5
bands based on 47 RR Lyrae stars of the type ab and 14 stars of the type c. The
P-L relationships were found to be better constrained for the fundamental mode
RR Lyrae stars in the riz passbands, with dispersion of 0.03, 0.02 and 0.02
magnitudes, respectively. The dispersion of the color at minimum light was
found to be small, supporting the use of this parameter as a means to obtain
accurate interstellar extinctions along the line of sight up to the distance of
the RR Lyrae star. We found a trend of color at minimum light with pulsational
period that, if taken into account, brings the dispersion in color at minimum
light to < 0.016 magnitudes for the (r-i), (i-z), and (r-z) colors. These
calibrations will be very useful for using RR Lyrae stars from DECam
observations as both standard candles for distance determinations and color
standards for reddening measurements.Comment: Accepted for publication in A

Comparison of dimethyl sulfoxide treated highly conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) electrodes for use in indium tin oxide-free organic electronic photovoltaic devices
Indium tin oxide (ITO)-free organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices were fabricated using highly conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as the transparent conductive electrode (TCE). The intrinsic conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS films was improved by two different dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) treatments – (i) DMSO was added directly to the PEDOT:PSS solution (PEDOT:PSSADD) and (ii) a pre-formed PEDOT:PSS film was immersed in DMSO (PEDOT:PSSIMM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) studies showed a large amount of PSS was removed from the PEDOT:PSSIMM electrode surface. OPV devices based on a poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) bulk hetrojunction showed that the PEDOT:PSSIMM electrode out-performed the PEDOT:PSSADD electrode, primarily due to an increase in short circuit current density from 6.62 mA cm−2 to 7.15 mA cm−2. The results highlight the importance of optimising the treatment of PEDOT:PSS electrodes and demonstrate their potential as an alternative TCE for rapid processing and low-cost OPV and other organic electronic devices
Are pre-main-sequence stars older than we thought?
We fit the colour-magnitude diagrams of stars between the zero-age
main-sequence and terminal-age main sequence in young clusters and
associations. The ages we derive are a factor 1.5 to 2 longer than the commonly
used ages for these regions, which are derived from the positions of
pre-main-sequence stars in colour-magnitude diagrams. From an examination of
the uncertainties in the main-sequence and pre-main-sequence models, we
conclude that the longer age scale is probably the correct one, which implies
we must revise upwards the commonly used ages for young clusters and
associations. Such a revision would explain the discrepancy between the
observational lifetimes of proto-planetary discs and theoretical calculations
of the time to form planets. It would also explain the absence of clusters with
ages between 5 and 30Myr.
We use the statistic to fit the main-sequence data, but find that we
must make significant modifications if we are to fit sequences which have
vertical segments in the colour-magnitude diagram. We present this modification
along with improvements to methods of calculating the goodness-of-fit statistic
and parameter uncertainties.

Short-term genome stability of serial Clostridium difficile ribotype 027 isolates in an experimental gut model and recurrent human disease

Firstly, 62 isolates from 29 timepoints from three in vitro gut models, inoculated with a NAP1/027 strain. Secondly, 122 isolates from 44 patients (2–8 samples/patient) with mostly recurrent/on-going symptomatic NAP-1/027 C. difficile infection. Reference-based mapping was used to identify single nucleotide variants (SNVs).Across three gut model inductions, two with antibiotic treatment, total 137 days, only two new SNVs became established. Pre-existing minority SNVs became dominant in two models. Several SNVs were detected, only present in the minority of colonies at one/two timepoints. The median (inter-quartile range) [range] time between patients’ first and last samples was 60 (29.5–118.5) [0–561] days. Within-patient C. difficile evolution was 0.45 SNVs/called genome/year (95%CI 0.00–1.28) and within-host diversity was 0.28 SNVs/called genome (0.05–0.53). 26/28 gut model and patient SNVs were non-synonymous, affecting a range of gene targets.The consistency of whole genome sequencing data from gut model C. difficile isolates, and the high stability of genomic sequences in isolates from patients, supports the use of whole genome sequencing in detailed transmission investigations.Peer reviewe
An Irreducible Ankle Fracture Dislocation: The Bosworth Injury
Irreducible fracture dislocations of the ankle are rare and represent true orthopedic emergencies. We present a case of a fracture dislocation that was irreducible owing to a fixed dislocation of the proximal fibular fragment posterior to the lateral ridge of the tibia. This particular type of injury, known as a Bosworth fracture dislocation, was not appreciated on the initial radiographs taken in the emergency room but was identified at urgent surgical management. The trauma mechanism, radiographs, treatment, and relevant published data are discussed in the present report
Investigating Ca II emission in the RS CVn binary ER Vulpeculae using the Broadening Function Formalism
The synchronously rotating G stars in the detached, short-period (0.7 d),
partially eclipsing binary, ER Vul, are the most chromospherically active
solar-type stars known. We have monitored activity in the Ca II H & K reversals
for almost an entire orbit. Rucinski's Broadening Function Formalism allows the
photospheric contribution to be objectively subtracted from the highly blended
spectra. The power of the BF technique is also demonstrated by the good
agreement of radial velocities with those measured by others from less crowded
spectral regions. In addition to strong Ca II emission from the primary and
secondary, there appears to be a high-velocity stream flowing onto the
secondary where it stimulates a large active region on the surface 30 - 40
degrees in advance of the sub-binary longitude. A model light curve with a spot
centered on the same longitude also gives the best fit to the observed light
curve. A flare with approximately 13% more power than at other phases was
detected in one spectrum. We suggest ER Vul may offer a magnified view of the
more subtle chromospheric effects synchronized to planetary revolution seen in
