    Removal of zinc from aqueous solution by optimized oil palm empty fruit bunches biochar as low cost adsorbent

    This study aims to produce optimized biochar from oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB), as a green, low cost adsorbent for uptake of zinc from aqueous solution. The impact of pyrolysis conditions, namely, highest treatment temperature (HTT), heating rate (HR), and residence time (RT) on biochar yield and adsorption capacity towards zinc, was investigated. Mathematical modeling and optimization of independent variables were performed employing response surface methodology (RSM). HTT was found to be the most influential variable, followed by residence time and heating rate. Based on the central composite design (CCD), two quadratic models were developed to correlate three independent variables to responses. The optimum production condition for OPEFB biochar was found as follows: HTT of 615°C, HR of 8°C/min, and RT of 128 minutes. The optimum biochar showed 15.18 mg/g adsorption capacity for zinc and 25.49% of yield which was in agreement with the predicted values, satisfactory.     DEMYSTIFYING SHIP OPERATIONAL AVAILABILITY – AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF NAVAL VESSELS

    Asset availability improvement has been the focus of many studies by various industries for a few decades now, and the defence industry is no exception. To date, there exists no simple and inexpensive high availability solution for the complex naval ships consisting of many interdependent systems and subsystems working in parallel. Any given approach must strike a balance between true needs and economics, an ever-increasing decision-making burden to stakeholders. Nevertheless, there are many ways to approach the problem. In the past, availability has been viewed as complex mathematical calculations and estimates involving defective equipment. The applied approach has not been fully understood nor appealing to most practitioners as well as the majority of stakeholders who continuously complain about the gap between theory and practice. This paper aims to demystify the complex naval ship availability issue, simplified for easy understanding of operators, maintainers and logisticians as well as other stakeholders involved in the maintenance of naval vessels. The stepby-step approach begins with the identification of severe factors involving both human and machinery affecting downtime of naval vessels culminating into the generation of an availability-oriented model, summarized to a simple four-step approach to availability improvement. Practitioners are now able to appreciate their individual contribution towards improving ship availability

    Sheep Genome Functional Annotation Reveals Proximal Regulatory Elements Contributed to The Evolution of Modern Breeds

    Domestication fundamentally reshaped animal morphology, physiology and behaviour, offering the opportunity to investigate the molecular processes driving evolutionary change. Here we assess sheep domestication and artificial selection by comparing genome sequence from 43 modern breeds (Ovis aries) and their Asian mouflon ancestor (O. orientalis) to identify selection sweeps. Next, we provide a comparative functional annotation of the sheep genome, validated using experimental ChIP-Seq of sheep tissue. Using these annotations, we evaluate the impact of selection and domestication on regulatory sequences and find that sweeps are significantly enriched for protein coding genes, proximal regulatory elements of genes and genome features associated with active transcription. Finally, we find individual sites displaying strong allele frequency divergence are enriched for the same regulatory features. Our data demonstrate that remodelling of gene expression is likely to have been one of the evolutionary forces that drove phenotypic diversification of this common livestock species

    Whole mitochondrial genomes unveil the impact of domestication on goat matrilineal variability

    Background: The current extensive use of the domestic goat (Capra hircus) is the result of its medium size and high adaptability as multiple breeds. The extent to which its genetic variability was influenced by early domestication practices is largely unknown. A common standard by which to analyze maternally-inherited variability of livestock species is through complete sequencing of the entire mitogenome (mitochondrial DNA, mtDNA). Results: We present the first extensive survey of goat mitogenomic variability based on 84 complete sequences selected from an initial collection of 758 samples that represent 60 different breeds of C. hircus, as well as its wild sister species, bezoar (Capra aegagrus) from Iran. Our phylogenetic analyses dated the most recent common ancestor of C. hircus to ~460,000 years (ka) ago and identified five distinctive domestic haplogroups (A, B1, C1a, D1 and G). More than 90 % of goats examined were in haplogroup A. These domestic lineages are predominantly nested within C. aegagrus branches, diverged concomitantly at the interface between the Epipaleolithic and early Neolithic periods, and underwent a dramatic expansion starting from ~12–10 ka ago. Conclusions: Domestic goat mitogenomes descended from a small number of founding haplotypes that underwent domestication after surviving the last glacial maximum in the Near Eastern refuges. All modern haplotypes A probably descended from a single (or at most a few closely related) female C. aegagrus. Zooarchaelogical data indicate that domestication first occurred in Southeastern Anatolia. Goats accompanying the first Neolithic migration waves into the Mediterranean were already characterized by two ancestral A and C variants. The ancient separation of the C branch (~130 ka ago) suggests a genetically distinct population that could have been involved in a second event of domestication. The novel diagnostic mutational motifs defined here, which distinguish wild and domestic haplogroups, could be used to understand phylogenetic relationships among modern breeds and ancient remains and to evaluate whether selection differentially affected mitochondrial genome variants during the development of economically important breeds

    Effect of stern hull shape on turning circle of ships

    Many factors such as: stern hull shape, length, draught, trim, propulsion system and external forces affecting the drift angle influence rate of turn and size of turning circle of ships. This paper discusses turning circle characteristics of U and V stern hull shape of Very Large Crude Oil Carrier (VLCC) ships. The ships have same principal dimension such as length, beam, and draught. The turning circle characteristics of the VLCC ships are simulated at 35 degree of rudder angle. In the analysis, firstly, turning circle performance of U-type VLCC ship is simulated. In the simulation, initial ship speed is determined using given power and rpm. Hydrodynamic derivatives coefficients are determined by including effect of fullness of aft run. Using the obtained, speed and hydrodynamic coefficients, force and moment acting on hull, force and moment induced by propeller, force and moment induced by rudder are determined. Finally, ship trajectory, ratio of speed, yaw angle and drift angle are determined. Results of simulation results of the VLCC ship are compared with the experimental one as validation. Using the same method, V-type VLCC is simulated and the simulation results are compared with U-type VLCC ship.     Integrated Computational Fluid Dynamic as a simulation tool for optimization of ship and offshore designs have been developed with higher reliability and accuracy by many institutions. The Department of Marine Technology at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University Teknologi Malaysia has recently developed an integrated CFD simulation tool using potential theory, which intends to upgrade student's level understanding the application of fluid dynamic to ship and offshore structure designs. This paper discusses the application of integrated Naval Architecture and Offshore (NAO) CFD simulation tool for hull performance analysis in term of wave resistance. Detailed discussion on pressure distribution around the hull and generated wave profile by the hull are also presented. As a case study, hull performance of VLCC tanker is simulated using the tool

    Abstract In this study, the magnetic photocatalyst Scendesmus/Fe3O4/TiO2 was synthesized, and its sonophotocatalytic properties in relation to the degradation of the Red195 dye were evaluated. Particles were characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier's transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and a vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM). At a pH of 5, a photocatalyst dosage of 100 mg, an initial R195 concentration of 100 mg/l, an ultrasound power of 38W, and an exposure time of 20 min, the maximum Red195 removal efficiency (100%) was achieved. After five cycles of recycling, the composite's sonophotocatalytic degradation stability for R195 remains above 95%. Experiments on scavenging indicate that electrons (h+) and hydroxyls (OH-) are indispensable decomposition agents. The removal of R195 by Scendesmus/Fe3O4/TiO2 is consistent with the pseudo-first-order kinetic, Freundlich, and Henderson's isotherm models, as determined by kinetic and isotherm investigations. The negative activation enthalpy of the standard (ΔH°) illuminates the exothermic adsorption mechanism. The increase in standard Gibbs activation free energy (ΔG°) with increasing temperature reveals the process is not spontaneous. As indicated by the negative value of the standard entropy of activation (ΔS°), activation of the reactants resulted in a loss of freedom

    Abstract The main purpose of this research endeavor is to reduce lead concentrations in the wastewater of an oil refinery through the utilization of a material composed of oyster shell waste (MIL-100(Fe)/Cygnea/Fe3O4/TiO2. Initially, iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4) were synthesized via solvent-thermal synthesis. It was subsequently coated layer by layer with the organic–metallic framework MIL-100 (Fe) using the core–shell method. Additionally, the solvent-thermal method was utilized to integrate TiO2 nanoparticles into the magnetic organic–metallic framework’s structure. Varieties of analytical analysis were utilized to investigate the physical and chemical properties of the synthetic final photocatalyst. Nitrogen adsorption and desorption technique (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning electron diffraction pattern (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Following the characterization of the final photocatalyst, the physical and chemical properties of the nanoparticles synthesized in each step, several primary factors that significantly affect the removal efficiency in the advanced oxidation system (AOPs) were examined. These variables consist of pH, photocatalyst dosage, lead concentration, and reaction temperature. The synthetic photocatalyst showed optimal performance in the removal of lead from petroleum wastewater under the following conditions: 35 °C temperature, pH of 3, 0.04 g/l photocatalyst dosage, and 100 mg/l wastewater concentration. Additionally, the photocatalyst maintained a significant level of reusability after undergoing five cycles. The findings of the study revealed that the photocatalyst dosage and pH were the most influential factors in the effectiveness of lead removal. According to optimal conditions, lead removal reached a maximum of 96%. The results of this investigation showed that the synthetic photocatalyst, when exposed to UVA light, exhibited an extraordinary capacity for lead removal

    Study on zigzag maneuver characteristics of V-U very large crude oil (VLCC) tankers

    The Department of Marine Technology at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University Teknologi Malaysia has recently developed an Ship Maneuverability tool which intends to upgrade student's level understanding the application of fluid dynamic on interaction between hull, propeller, and rudder during maneuvering. This paper discusses zigzag maneuver for conventional Very Large Crude Oil (VLCC) ships with the same principal dimensions but different stern flame shape. 10/10 zigzag maneuver characteristics of U and V types of VLCC ships are investigated. Simulation results for U-type show a good agreement with the experimental data, but V-type not good agreement with experimental one. Further study on zigzag maneuver characteristics are required

    Availability-oriented contract management approach: A simplified view to a complex naval issue

    Navies around the world aspire to improve their fleet operational availability. Many navies struggle to achieve their targeted high operational availability even though they are certain that they have continuously implemented improved maintenance concepts and philosophies, allocated the necessary budget and implemented advanced human capital development plans. Nevertheless, the efforts may be futile when they could not be allocated precisely in tackling the issues concerning "human and equipment" related Downtime Influence Factors (DIFs) impacting ship operational availability. The extended exploratory research encapsulated all the efforts in discovering a simplified methodology in tackling this complex naval issue. The 13 objectives achieved in this paper covers the initial work in identifying the DIFs until the development of a Contract Management Control and Monitoring System (ConCaMS) that is able to assist policymakers and all stakeholders including Contract Managers in managing the ship maintenance contract efficiently and effectively. The ConCaMS is able to guide so that actions could be taken earlier enough for recovery to be possible, as opposed to traditional methods. Additionally, the ConCaMS could also be used by policymakers and Top Management of the private sectors as well as the governments as a proven method in comparing contract performance between various contracts, by using availability as the performance benchmark
