The theoretical efficiencies of the rejection-free method and of the Monte Carlo with Absorbing Markov Chains method are given. Isobutyl acetate: electronic state spectroscopy by high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption, He(I) photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations
The high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption spectrum of isobutyl acetate, C6H12O2, is presented here and was measured over the energy range 4.3–10.8 eV (290–115 nm). Valence and Rydberg transitions with their associated vibronic series have been observed in the photoabsorption spectrum and are assigned in accordance with new ab initio calculations of the vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths. The measured photoabsorption cross sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of this ester in the Earth’s upper atmosphere (20–50 km). Calculations have also been carried out to determine the ionization energies and fine structure of the lowest ionic state of isobutyl acetate and are compared with a photoelectron spectrum (from 9.5 to 16.7 eV), recorded for the first time. Vibrational structure is observed in the first photoelectron band of this molecule

Restoration of macroscopic isotropy has been investigated in (d+1)-simplex
fractal conductor networks via exact real space renormalization group
transformations. Using some theorems of fixed point theory, it has been shown
very rigoroursly that the macroscopic conductivity becomes isotropic for large
scales and anisotropy vanishes with a scaling exponent which is computed
exactly for arbitrary values of d and decimation numbers b=2,3,4 and

WISP genes are members of the connective tissue growth factor family that are up-regulated in Wnt-1-transformed cells and aberrantly expressed in human colon tumors
Wnt family members are critical to many developmental processes, and components of the Wnt signaling pathway have been linked to tumorigenesis in familial and sporadic colon carcinomas. Here we report the identification of two genes, WISP-1 and WISP-2, that are up-regulated in the mouse mammary epithelial cell line C57MG transformed by Wnt-1, but not by Wnt-4. Together with a third related gene, WISP-3, these proteins define a subfamily of the connective tissue growth factor family. Two distinct systems demonstrated WISP induction to be associated with the expression of Wnt-1. These included (i) C57MG cells infected with a Wnt-1 retroviral vector or expressing Wnt-1 under the control of a tetracyline repressible promoter, and (ii) Wnt-1 transgenic mice. The WISP-1 gene was localized to human chromosome 8q24.1-8q24.3. WISP-1 genomic DNA was amplified in colon cancer cell lines and in human colon tumors and its RNA overexpressed (2- to >30-fold) in 84% of the tumors examined compared with patient-matched normal mucosa. WISP-3 mapped to chromosome 6q22-6q23 and also was overexpressed (4- to >40-fold) in 63% of the colon tumors analyzed. In contrast, WISP-2 mapped to human chromosome 20q12-20q13 and its DNA was amplified, but RNA expression was reduced (2- to >30-fold) in 79% of the tumors. These results suggest that the WISP genes may be downstream of Wnt-1 signaling and that aberrant levels of WISP expression in colon cancer may play a role in colon tumorigenesis
A One-Parameter Family of Hamiltonian Structures for the KP Hierarchy and a Continuous Deformation of the Nonlinear \W_{\rm KP} Algebra
The KP hierarchy is hamiltonian relative to a one-parameter family of Poisson
structures obtained from a generalized Adler map in the space of formal
pseudodifferential symbols with noninteger powers. The resulting \W-algebra
is a one-parameter deformation of \W_{\rm KP} admitting a central extension
for generic values of the parameter, reducing naturally to \W_n for special
values of the parameter, and contracting to the centrally extended
\W_{1+\infty}, \W_\infty and further truncations. In the classical limit,
all algebras in the one-parameter family are equivalent and isomorphic to
\w_{\rm KP}. The reduction induced by setting the spin-one field to zero
yields a one-parameter deformation of \widehat{\W}_\infty which contracts to

Interesting magnetic properties of FeCoSi alloys
Solid solution between nonmagnetic narrow gap semiconductor FeSi and
diamagnetic semi-metal CoSi gives rise to interesting metallic alloys with
long-range helical magnetic ordering, for a wide range of intermediate
concentration. We report various interesting magnetic properties of these
alloys, including low temperature re-entrant spin-glass like behaviour and a
novel inverted magnetic hysteresis loop. Role of Dzyaloshinski-Moriya
interaction in the magnetic response of these non-centrosymmetric alloys is

Nernst Effect and Anomalous Transport in Cuprates: A Preformed-Pair Alternative to the Vortex Scenario
We address those puzzling experiments in underdoped high
superconductors which have been associated with normal state "vortices" and
show these data can be understood as deriving from preformed pairs with onset
temperature . For uncorrelated bosons in small magnetic fields, and
arbitrary , we present the exact contribution to \textit{all}
transport coefficients. In the overdoped regime our results reduce to those of
standard fluctuation theories (). Semi-quantitative agreement

Controle biológico do ácaro rajado com ácaros predadores fitoseídeos (Acari: Tetranychidae, Phytoseiidae) em culturas de pepino e morango
O ácaro rajado, Tetranychus urticae Koch, é considerado uma das principais pragas de hortaliças e várias outras culturas no Brasil, em áreas onde um considerável volume de acaricidas é anualmente empregado no seu controle. O objetivo deste trabalho foi testar a viabilidade técnica do emprego dos fitoseídeos Amblyseius idaeus (Denmark & Muma) e Phytoseudus macropilis (Banks), comum ente encontrados no Brasil, no controle de T. urticae em pepino e morangueiro em Jaguaríúna,SP. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, com 4 repetições e 4 tratamentos (T1-T4) para o pepino e 5 tratamentos para o morangueiro (T1-T5): T1, testemunha; T2, pulverizações semanais de Malation para a exclusão de predadores nativos; T3, liberações periódicas de A.idaeus; T4, liberações periódicas de P.macropilis; T5, pulverizações semanais de avermectina para a exclusão de ácaros fitófagos e predadores nativos. Apenas A.idaeus se estabeleceu na cultura de pepino, reduzindo significativamente a população de T. urticae. Ambas espécies de predadores se estabeleceram na cultura do morango e reduziram significativamente a população de T.urticae.The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, is considered one of the main pests of horticultural and other crops in Brazil, in areas where a considerable volume of acaricides is annually used for its control. The objective of this work was to test the technical viability of using phytoseiids Amblyseius idaeus (Denmark & Muma) and Phytoseudus macropilis (Banks), commonly found in Brazil, to control T .urticae in cucumber and strawberry crops in Jaguaríúna,SP. A randomized complete block design was used, with 4 replicates and 4 treatments for cucumber (T1-T4) and 5 treatments for strawberry crops (T1-T5): T1, control; T2, weekly sprays of malathion for exclusion of native predators; T3, periodical releases of A.idaeus; T4, periodical releases of P. macropilis; T5, weekly sprays of avermectin for exclusion of native phytophagous and predatory mites. Only A. idaeus was successfully established on cucumber, significantly reducing T. urticae population. Both released phytoseiid species were established on strawberry and reduced significantly the population of T. urticae
Complex patterns of spontaneous initiations and terminations of reentrant circulation in a loop of cardiac tissue
A two-component model is developed that consists of a discrete loop of
cardiac cells that circulates action potentials together with a cardiac pacing
mechanism. Physiological properties of cells such as restitutions of
refractoriness and of conduction velocity are given via experimentally measured
functions. The dynamics of circulating pulses and their interactions with the
pacer are regulated by two threshold relations. Patterns of spontaneous
initiations and terminations of reentry (SITR) generated by this system are
studied through numerical simulations and analytical observations. These
patterns can be regular or irregular; causes of irregularities are identified
as the threshold bistability of reentrant circulation (T-bistability) and in

c-Axis Transport and Resistivity Anisotropy of Lightly- to Moderately-Doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} Single Crystals: Implications on the Charge Transport Mechanism
Both the in-plane and the out-of-plane resistivities (\rho_{ab} and \rho_{c})
are measured in high-quality La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (LSCO) single crystals in
the lightly- to moderately-doped region, x = 0.01 to 0.10, and the resistivity
anisotropy is determined. In all the samples studied, the anisotropy ratio \rho
_{c}/\rho_{ab} quickly increases with decreasing temperature, although in
non-superconducting samples the strong localization effect causes \rho
_{c}/\rho_{ab} to decrease at low temperatures. Most notably, it is found that
\rho_{c}/\rho_{ab} at moderate temperatures (100 - 300 K) is almost completely
independent of doping in the non-superconducting regime (x = 0.01 to 0.05);
this indicates that the same charge confinement mechanism that renormalizes the
c-axis hopping rate is at work down to x = 0.01. It is discussed that this
striking x-independence of \rho_{c}/\rho_{ab} is consistent with the idea that
holes form a self-organized network of hole-rich regions, which also explains
the unusually metallic in-plane transport of the holes in the lightly-doped
region. Furthermore, the data for x > 0.05 suggest that the emergence of the
