    Role of many-body entanglement in decoherence processes

    A pure state decoheres into a mixed state as it entangles with an environment. When an entangled two-mode system is embedded in a thermal environment, however, each mode may not be entangled with its environment by their simple linear interaction. We consider an exactly solvable model to study the dynamics of a total system, which is composed of an entangled two-mode system and a thermal environment, and also an array of infinite beam splitters. It is shown that many-body entanglement of the system and the environment plays a crucial role in the process of disentangling the system.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Quasi-Two-Body Decays of Nonstrange Baryons

    We examine the decays of nonstrange baryons to the final states Δπ\Delta\pi, NρN\rho, NηN\eta, Nηâ€ČN\eta^\prime, NωN\omega, N1/2+(1440)πN1/2^+(1440)\pi, and Δ3/2+(1600)π\Delta3/2^+(1600)\pi, in a relativized pair-creation(3P0^3P_0) model which has been developed in a previous study of the NπN\pi decays of the same baryon states. As it is our goal to provide a guide for the possible discovery of new baryon states at CEBAF and elsewhere, we examine the decays of resonances which have already been seen in the partial-wave analyses, along with those of states which are predicted by the quark model but which remain undiscovered. The level of agreement between our calculation and the available widths from the partial-wave analyses is encouraging.Comment: 41 pages, CEBAF-TH-93-1

    Correlating Bayesian date estimates with climatic events and domestication using a bovine case study

    The tribe Bovini contains a number of commercially and culturally important species, such as cattle. Understanding their evolutionary time scale is important for distinguishing between post-glacial and domestication-associated population expansions, but estimates of bovine divergence times have been hindered by a lack of reliable calibration points. We present a Bayesian phylogenetic analysis of 481 mitochondrial D-loop sequences, including 228 radiocarbon-dated ancient DNA sequences, using a multi-demographic coalescent model. By employing the radiocarbon dates as internal calibrations, we co-estimate the bovine phylogeny and divergence times in a relaxed-clock framework. The analysis yields evidence for significant population expansions in both taurine and zebu cattle, European aurochs and yak clades. The divergence age estimates support domestication-associated expansion times (less than 12kyr) for the major haplogroups of cattle.     Long-distance quantum communication with "polarization" maximally entangled states

    We propose a scheme for long-distance quantum communication where the elementary entanglement is generated through two-photon interference and quantum swapping is performed through one-photon interference. Local "polarization" maximally entangled states of atomic ensembles are generated by absorbing a single photon from on-demand single-photon sources. This scheme is robust against phase fluctuations in the quantum channels, moreover speeds up long-distance high-fidelity entanglement generation rate.Comment: 5 pages 5 figure

    Let G be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k; assume that Char k is zero or good for G. Let \cB be the variety of Borel subgroups of G and let e in Lie G be nilpotent. There is a natural action of the centralizer C_G(e) of e in G on the Springer fibre \cB_e = {B' in \cB | e in Lie B'} associated to e. In this paper we consider the case, where e lies in the subregular nilpotent orbit; in this case \cB_e is a Dynkin curve. We give a complete description of the C_G(e)-orbits in \cB_e. In particular, we classify the irreducible components of \cB_e on which C_G(e) acts with finitely many orbits. In an application we obtain a classification of all subregular orbital varieties admitting a finite number of B-orbits for B a fixed Borel subgroup of G.Comment: 12 pages, to appear in Math

    Explaining the unobserved: why quantum mechanics is not only about information

    A remarkable theorem by Clifton, Bub and Halvorson (2003)(CBH) characterizes quantum theory in terms of information--theoretic principles. According to Bub (2004, 2005) the philosophical significance of the theorem is that quantum theory should be regarded as a ``principle'' theory about (quantum) information rather than a ``constructive'' theory about the dynamics of quantum systems. Here we criticize Bub's principle approach arguing that if the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics remains intact then there is no escape route from solving the measurement problem by constructive theories. We further propose a (Wigner--type) thought experiment that we argue demonstrates that quantum mechanics on the information--theoretic approach is incomplete.Comment: 34 Page

    Enantioselective Synthesis of Pharmaceutically Active Îł-Aminobutyric Acids Using a Tailor-Made Artificial Michaelase in One-Pot Cascade Reactions

    Chiral γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) analogues represent abundantly prescribed drugs, which are broadly applied as anticonvulsants, as antidepressants, and for the treatment of neuropathic pain. Here we report a one-pot two-step biocatalytic cascade route for synthesis of the pharmaceutically relevant enantiomers of γ-nitrobutyric acids, starting from simple precursors (acetaldehyde and nitroalkenes), using a tailor-made highly enantioselective artificial “Michaelase” (4-oxalocrotonate tautomerase mutant L8Y/M45Y/F50A), an aldehyde dehydrogenase with a broad non-natural substrate scope, and a cofactor recycling system. We also report a three-step chemoenzymatic cascade route for the efficient chemical reduction of enzymatically prepared γ-nitrobutyric acids into GABA analogues in one pot, achieving high enantiopurity (e.r. up to 99:1) and high overall yields (up to 70%). This chemoenzymatic methodology offers a step-economic alternative route to important pharmaceutically active GABA analogues, and highlights the exciting opportunities available for combining chemocatalysts, natural enzymes, and designed artificial biocatalysts in multistep syntheses
