RTOS has a cost savings advantage for real-time applications, such as those with random inputs requiring a flexible data routing facility, display systems simplified by a device independent interface language, and complex applications needing added storage protection and data queuing

    Turfgrass Water Use in Utah

    Get PDF
The goal of turfgrass irrigation is to maintain quality by replacing water lost to the atmosphere from the soil by evaporation, and from leaf surfaces by transpiration. The combination of evaporation and transpiration is referred to as evapotranspiration (Et), or simply water use

Rapid, Precise, and High-Sensitivity Acquisition of Paleomagnetic and Rock-Magnetic Data: Development of a Low-Noise Automatic Sample Changing System for Superconducting Rock Magnetometers

    Get PDF
Among Earth sciences, paleomagnetism is particularly linked to the statistics of large sample sets as a matter of historical development and logistical necessity. Because the geomagnetic field varies over timescales relevant to sedimentary deposition and igneous intrusion, while the fidelity of recorded magnetization is modulated by original properties of rock units and by alteration histories, "ideal" paleomagnetic results measure remanent magnetizations of hundreds of samples at dozens of progressive demagnetization levels, accompanied by tests of magnetic composition on representative sister specimens. We present an inexpensive, open source system for automating paleomagnetic and rock magnetic measurements. Using vacuum pick-and-place technology and a quartz-glass sample holder, the system can in one hour measure remanent magnetizations, as weak as a few pAm2, of ~30 specimens in two vertical orientations with measurement errors comparable to those of the best manual systems. The system reduces the number of manual manipulations required per specimen ~8 fold

Efficient numerical diagonalization of hermitian 3x3 matrices

A very common problem in science is the numerical diagonalization of symmetric or hermitian 3x3 matrices. Since standard "black box" packages may be too inefficient if the number of matrices is large, we study several alternatives. We consider optimized implementations of the Jacobi, QL, and Cuppen algorithms and compare them with an analytical method relying on Cardano's formula for the eigenvalues and on vector cross products for the eigenvectors. Jacobi is the most accurate, but also the slowest method, while QL and Cuppen are good general purpose algorithms. The analytical algorithm outperforms the others by more than a factor of 2, but becomes inaccurate or may even fail completely if the matrix entries differ greatly in magnitude. This can mostly be circumvented by using a hybrid method, which falls back to QL if conditions are such that the analytical calculation might become too inaccurate. For all algorithms, we give an overview of the underlying mathematical ideas, and present detailed benchmark results. C and Fortran implementations of our code are available for download from http://www.mpi-hd.mpg.de/~globes/3x3/ .Comment: 13 pages, no figures, new hybrid algorithm added, matches published version, typo in Eq. M\"ossbauer Antineutrinos: Recoilless Resonant Emission and Absorption of Electron Antineutrinos

Basic questions concerning phononless resonant capture of monoenergetic electron antineutrinos (M\"ossbauer antineutrinos) emitted in bound-state beta-decay in the 3H - 3He system are discussed. It is shown that lattice expansion and contraction after the transformation of the nucleus will drastically reduce the probability of phononless transitions and that various solid-state effects will cause large line broadening. As a possible alternative, the rare-earth system 163Ho - 163Dy is favoured. M\"ossbauer-antineutrino experiments could be used to gain new and deep insights into several basic problems in neutrino physics

A koherencia mint a lelki és testi egészség alapvető meghatározója a mai magyar társadalomban = Sense of coherence as an important determinant of mental and physical health

bFGF and its low affinity receptors in the pathogenesis of HIV-associated nephropathy in transgenic mice

bFGF and its low affinity receptors in the pathogenesis of HIV-associated nephropathy in transgenic mice. HIV-associated nephropathy is characterized by extensive tubulointerstitial disease with epithelial cell injury, microcystic proliferation, and tubular regeneration with glomerulosclerosis. To explore the role of bFGF as a mediator of HIV-induced interstitial disease, we utilized an HIV transgenic mouse model that manifests clinical and histological features observed in patients. In transgenic mice, simultaneous renal epithelial cell proliferation and injury were detected in vivo. In areas of microcystic proliferation, immunoreactive bFGF colocalized with extracellular matrix. Kidneys from transgenic mice had increased bFGF low affinity binding sites, particularly in the renal interstitium. In vitro, transgenic renal tubular epithelial cells proliferated more rapidly and generated tubular structures spontaneously, in marked contrast to nontransgenic renal cells where these pathologic features could be mimicked by exogenous bFGF. These studies suggest that renal bFGF and its receptors play an important role in the pathogenesis of HIV-associated nephropathy

Non-Standard Neutrino Interactions from a Triplet Seesaw Model

We investigate non-standard neutrino interactions (NSIs) in the triplet seesaw model featuring non-trivial correlations between NSI parameters and neutrino masses and mixing parameters. We show that sizable NSIs can be generated as a consequence of a nearly degenerate neutrino mass spectrum. Thus, these NSIs could lead to quite significant signals of lepton flavor violating decays such as \mu^- \to e^- \nu_e anti\nu_\mu and \mu^+ \to e^+ anti\nu_e \nu_\mu at a future neutrino factory, effects adding to the uncertainty in determination of the Earth matter density profile, as well as characteristic patterns of the doubly charged Higgs decays observable at the Large Hadron Collider.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures and 1 table; v2: minor corrections, Sect. Coherent Matter Wave Transport in Speckle Potentials

This article studies multiple scattering of matter waves by a disordered optical potential in two and in three dimensions. We calculate fundamental transport quantities such as the scattering mean free path s\ell_s, the Boltzmann transport mean free path \elltrb, and the Boltzmann diffusion constant DBD_B, using a diagrammatic Green functions approach. Coherent multiple scattering induces interference corrections known as weak localization which entail a reduced diffusion constant. We derive the corresponding expressions for matter wave transport in an correlated speckle potential and provide the relevant parameter values for a possible experimental study of this coherent transport regime, including the critical crossover to the regime of strong or Anderson localization.Comment: 33 pages, minor corrections, published versio
