    How much of the Hippocampus can be Explained by Functional Constraints?

    In the spirit of Marr, we discuss an information-theoretic approach that derives, from the role of the hippocampus in memory, constraints on its anatomical and physiological structure. The observed structure is consistent with such constraints, and, further, we relate the quantitative arguments developed in earlier analytical studies to experimental measures extracted from neuronal recordings in the behaving rat

    The stimulus control of local enclosures and barriers over head direction and place cell spatial firing

    This research was supported by a grant to P.A.D. and E.R.W. from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BB/P002455/1).Objective: Head direction cell and place cell spatially tuned firing is often anchored to salient visual landmarks on the periphery of a recording environment. What is less well understood is whether structural features of an environment, such as orientation of a maze sub-compartment or a polarising barrier, can likewise control spatial firing. Method: We recorded from 54 head direction cells in the medial entorhinal cortex and subicular region of male Lister Hooded rats while they explored an apparatus with four parallel or four radially-arranged compartments (Experiment 1). In Experiment 2, we recorded from 130 place cells (in Lister- and Long-Evans Hooded rats) and 30 head direction cells with 90° rotations of a cue card and a barrier in a single environment (Experiment 2). Results: We found that head direction cells maintained a similar preferred firing direction across four separate maze compartments even when these faced different directions (Experiment 1). However, in an environment with a single compartment, we observed that both a barrier and a cue card exerted comparable amounts of stimulus control over head direction cells and place cells (Experiment 2). Conclusion: The maintenance of a stable directional orientation across maze compartments suggests that the head direction cell system has the capacity to provide a global directional reference that allows the animal to distinguish otherwise similar maze compartments based on the compartment’s orientation. A barrier is, however, capable of controlling spatially tuned firing in an environment in which it is the sole polarising feature.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Wakeful rest alleviates interference-based forgetting

    Retroactive interference (RI)—the disruptive influence of events occurring after the formation of a new memory—is one of the primary causes of forgetting. Placing individuals within an environment that postpones interference should, therefore, greatly reduce the likelihood of information being lost from memory. For example, a short period of wakeful rest should diminish interference-based forgetting. To test this hypothesis, participants took part in a foreign language learning activity and were shown English translations of 20 Icelandic words for immediate recall. Half of the participants were then given an 8-min rest before completing a similar or dissimilar interfering distractor task. The other half did not receive a rest until after the distractor task, at which point interference had already taken place. All participants were then asked to translate the Icelandic words for a second time. Results revealed that retention was significantly worse at the second recall test, but being allowed a brief rest before completing the distractor task helped reduce the amount of forgetting.     PREFACE The lectures in this volume were delivered in the auditorium of Abilene Christian College during the last week of February in 1924 and 1925. Not all of the lectures delivered during these two weeks are given here, some of those delivering lectures not having responded with their manuscripts. These are given to the public in the belief that the splendid sermons delivered here ought to be read by thousands of Christians who did not have the opportunity of hearing them. Many of those who heard them will desire to read them. May this contribution to the literature of Christian teaching from the minds of some of our best and most faithful laborers in the Master’s vineyard be a continued blessing to all whose lives they touch. The lectures for 1919 were published in one volume, 1920 and 1921 were combined in one volume, as were also the lectures for 1922 and 1923. By putting the lectures for two years in one volume, the reader is saved the expense of an additional book in order to receive the full benefit of these lectures. That these discourses are of great value is recognized by thousands who have heard them orally or have read them on the printed page. Such carefully prepared addresses really and truly merit a permanent place in the literature of the brotherhood of the churches of Christ. They are filled with expositions and analyses of much benefit to younger brethren who are entering upon lines of public service for the church, and they contain instruction on the word of God that is of much value to those out of the church as well as those in the church. The four books comprising the Abilene Christian College Lectures will make a most valuable addition to all libraries. We are at this time, January, 1926, in position to furnish complete sets or any volume to complete any broken set that any of our readers may have. When our present supply is gone, the books will probably not be reprinted as no plates have been made, and the books will be scarce. The messages of hope and love contained in this volume will find their place into the homes of many thousands, and it is to be ardently hoped that they will be read attentively and that they may contribute much to the extension of the power and kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.     Pediatric supracondylar fractures of the distal humerus

    Supracondylar fractures of the humerus are a common pediatric elbow injury that are historically associated with morbidity due to malunion, neurovascular complications, and compartment syndrome. True anteroposterior and lateral radiographs are essential not only for an accurate diagnosis, but also for creating a treatment plan for these injuries. A staging system (based on the lateral radiograph) for classifying the severity of the fracture helps guide definitive management. Nondisplaced fractures are treated initially with a posterior splint, followed by a long-arm casting. Closed reduction and percutaneous pinning is the preferred treatment for displaced or unstable fractures. If there is any question about fracture stability, patients should be seen within 5 days postoperatively for repeat radiographs to ensure that the reduction and pin fixation has been maintained. Understanding the anatomy, radiographic findings, management options, and complications associated with this fracture allow physicians to limit the morbidity associated with this relatively common pediatric injury

    The Temporal Signature of Memories: Identification of a General Mechanism for Dynamic Memory Replay in Humans

    Reinstatement of dynamic memories requires the replay of neural patterns that unfold over time in a similar manner as during perception. However, little is known about the mechanisms that guide such a temporally structured replay in humans, because previous studies used either unsuitable methods or paradigms to address this question. Here, we overcome these limitations by developing a new analysis method to detect the replay of temporal patterns in a paradigm that requires participants to mentally replay short sound or video clips. We show that memory reinstatement is accompanied by a decrease of low-frequency (8 Hz) power, which carries a temporal phase signature of the replayed stimulus. These replay effects were evident in the visual as well as in the auditory domain and were localized to sensory-specific regions. These results suggest low-frequency phase to be a domain-general mechanism that orchestrates dynamic memory replay in humans

    The spike-timing-dependent learning rule to encode spatiotemporal patterns in a network of spiking neurons

    We study associative memory neural networks based on the Hodgkin-Huxley type of spiking neurons. We introduce the spike-timing-dependent learning rule, in which the time window with the negative part as well as the positive part is used to describe the biologically plausible synaptic plasticity. The learning rule is applied to encode a number of periodical spatiotemporal patterns, which are successfully reproduced in the periodical firing pattern of spiking neurons in the process of memory retrieval. The global inhibition is incorporated into the model so as to induce the gamma oscillation. The occurrence of gamma oscillation turns out to give appropriate spike timings for memory retrieval of discrete type of spatiotemporal pattern. The theoretical analysis to elucidate the stationary properties of perfect retrieval state is conducted in the limit of an infinite number of neurons and shows the good agreement with the result of numerical simulations. The result of this analysis indicates that the presence of the negative and positive parts in the form of the time window contributes to reduce the size of crosstalk term, implying that the time window with the negative and positive parts is suitable to encode a number of spatiotemporal patterns. We draw some phase diagrams, in which we find various types of phase transitions with change of the intensity of global inhibition.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Our planet has abundant renewable and conventional energy resources but technological capability and capacity gaps coupled with water-energy needs limit the benefits of these resources to citizens. Through IoT technology solutions and state-of-the-art IoT sensing and communications approaches, the sustainable energy-related research and innovation can bring a revolution in this area. Moreover, by the leveraging current infrastructure, including renewable energy technologies, microgrids, and power-to-gas (P2G) hydrogen systems, the Internet of Things in sustainable energy systems can address challenges in energy security to the community, with a minimal trade-off to environment and culture. In this chapter, the IoT in sustainable energy systems approaches, methodologies, scenarios, and tools is presented with a detailed discussion of different sensing and communications techniques. This IoT approach in energy systems is envisioned to enhance the bidirectional interchange of network services in grid by using Internet of Things in grid that will result in enhanced system resilience, reliable data flow, and connectivity optimization. Moreover, the sustainable energy IoT research challenges and innovation opportunities are also discussed to address the complex energy needs of our community and promote a strong energy sector economy
