An entropy evaluation algorithm to improve transmission efficiency of compressed data in pervasive healthcare mobile sensor networks
Data transmission is the most critical operation for mobile sensors networks in term of energy waste. Particularly in pervasive healthcare sensors network it is paramount to preserve the quality of service also by means of energy saving policies. Communication and data transmission are among the most critical operation for such devises in term of energy waste. In this paper we present a novel approach to increase battery life-span by means of shorter transmission due to data compression. On the other hand, since this latter operation has a non-neglectable energy cost, we developed a compression efficiency estimator based on the evaluation of the absolute and relative entropy. Such algorithm provides us with a fast mean for the evaluation of data compressibility. Since mobile wireless sensor networks are prone to battery discharge-related problems, such an evaluation can be used to improve the electrical efficiency of data communication. In facts the developed technique, due to its independence from the string or file length, is extremely robust both for small and big data files, as well as to evaluate whether or not to compress data before transmission. Since the proposed solution provides a quantitative analysis of the source's entropy and the related statistics, it has been implemented as a preprocessing step before transmission. A dynamic threshold defines whether or not to invoke a compression subroutine. Such a subroutine should be expected to greatly reduce the transmission length. On the other hand a data compression algorithm should be used only when the energy gain of the reduced transmission time is presumably greater than the energy used to run the compression software. In this paper we developed an automatic evaluation system in order to optimize the data transmission in mobile sensor networks, by compressing data only when this action is presumed to be energetically efficient. We tested the proposed algorithm by using the Canterbury Corpus as well as standard pictorial data as benchmark test. The implemented system has been proven to be time-inexpensive with respect to a compression algorithm. Finally the computational complexity of the proposed approach is virtually neglectable with respect to the compression and transmission routines themselves
Different responses of northern and southern high latitude ionospheric convection to IMF rotations: a case study based on SuperDARN observations
Abstract. We use SuperDARN data to study high-latitude ionospheric convection over a three hour period (starting at 22:00 UT on 2 January 2003), during which the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) flipped between two states, one with By&gt;&gt;|Bz| and one with Bz&gt;0, both with negative Bx. We find, as expected from previous works, that day side ionospheric convection is controlled by the IMF in both hemispheres. For strongly northward IMF, we observed signatures of two reverse cells, both in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) and in the Southern Hemisphere (SH), due to lobe reconnection. On one occasion, we also observed in the NH two viscous cells at the sides of the reverse cell pair. For duskward IMF, we observed in the NH a large dusk clockwise cell, accompanied by a smaller dawn cell, and the signature of a corresponding pattern in the SH. On two occasions, a three cell pattern, composed of a large clockwise cell and two viscous cells, was observed in the NH. As regards the timings of the NH and SH convection reconfigurations, we find that the convection reconfiguration from a positive Bz dominated to a positive By dominated pattern occurred almost simultaneously (i.e. within a few minutes) in the two hemispheres. On the contrary, the reconfiguration from a By dominated to a northward IMF pattern started in the NH 8–13 min earlier than in the SH. We suggest that part of such a delay can be due to the following mechanism: as IMF Bx&lt;0, the northward-tailward magnetosheath magnetic field reconnects with the magnetospheric field first tailward of the northern cusp and later on tailward of the southern cusp, due to the IMF draping around the magnetopause.</p
SENSE: A comparison of photon detection efficiency and optical crosstalk of various SiPM devices
This paper describes a comparison of photon detection efficiency and optical
crosstalk measurements performed by three partners: Geneva University, Catania
Observatory and Nagoya University. The measurements were compared for three
different SiPM devices with different active areas: from 9 up to 93.6
produced by Hamamatsu. The objective of this work is to establish the
measurements and analysis procedures for calculating the main SiPM parameters
and their precision. This work was done in the scope of SENSE project which
aims to build roadmap for the last developments in field of sensors for low
light level detection
Modelling extreme water levels using intertidal topography and bathymetry derived from multispectral satellite images
Topographic and bathymetric data are essential for accurate predictions of flooding in estuaries because water depth and elevation data are fundamental components of the shallow-water hydrodynamic equations used in models for storm surges and tides. Where lidar or in situ acoustic surveys are unavailable, recent efforts have centred on using satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) and satellite-derived topography (SDT). This work is aimed at (1) determining the accuracy of SDT and (2) assessing the suitability of the SDT and SDB for extreme water level modelling of estuaries. The SDT was created by extracting the waterline as it tracks over the topography with changing tides. The method was applied to four different estuaries in Aotearoa / New Zealand: Whitianga, Maketū, Ōhiwa and Tauranga harbours. Results show that the waterline method provides similar topography to the lidar with a root-mean-square error equal to 0.2 m, and it is slightly improved when two correction methods are applied to the topography derivations: the removal of statistical bias (0.02 m improvement) and hydrodynamic modelling correction of waterline elevation (0.01 m improvement). The use of SDT in numerical simulations of surge levels was assessed for Tauranga Harbour in eight different simulation scenarios. Each scenario explored different ways of incorporating the SDT to replace the topographic data collected using non-satellite survey methods. In addition, one of these scenarios combined SDT (for intertidal zones) and SDB (for subtidal bathymetry), so only satellite information is used in surge modelling. The latter SDB is derived using the well-known ratio–log method. For Tauranga Harbour, using SDT and SDB in hydrodynamic models does not result in significant differences in predicting high water levels when compared with the scenario modelled using surveyed bathymetry.</p
GLUE-IT and PEDEL-AA: new programmes for analyzing protein diversity in randomized libraries
There are many methods for introducing random mutations into nucleic acid sequences. Previously, we described a suite of programmes for estimating the completeness and diversity of randomized DNA libraries generated by a number of these protocols. Our programmes suggested some empirical guidelines for library design; however, no information was provided regarding library diversity at the protein (rather than DNA) level. We have now updated our web server, enabling analysis of translated libraries constructed by site-saturation mutagenesis and error-prone PCR (epPCR). We introduce GLUE-Including Translation (GLUE-IT), which finds the expected amino acid completeness of libraries in which up to six codons have been independently varied (according to any user-specified randomization scheme). We provide two tools for assisting with experimental design: CodonCalculator, for assessing amino acids corresponding to given randomized codons; and AA-Calculator, for finding degenerate codons that encode user-specified sets of amino acids. We also present PEDEL-AA, which calculates amino acid statistics for libraries generated by epPCR. Input includes the parent sequence, overall mutation rate, library size, indel rates and a nucleotide mutation matrix. Output includes amino acid completeness and diversity statistics, and the number and length distribution of sequences truncated by premature termination codons. Inclusive electron scattering in a relativistic Green function approach
A relativistic Green function approach to the inclusive quasielastic (e,e')
scattering is presented. The single particle Green function is expanded in
terms of the eigenfunctions of the nonhermitian optical potential. This allows
one to treat final state interactions consistently in the inclusive and in the
exclusive reactions. Numerical results for the response functions and the cross
sections for different target nuclei and in a wide range of kinematics are

Causal Loop Analysis of coastal geomorphological systems
As geomorphologists embrace ever more sophisticated theoretical frameworks that shift from simple notions of evolution towards single steady equilibria to recognise the possibility of multiple response pathways and outcomes, morphodynamic modellers are facing the problem of how to keep track of an ever-greater number of system feedbacks. Within coastal geomorphology, capturing these feedbacks is critically important, especially as the focus of activity shifts from reductionist models founded on sediment transport fundamentals to more synthesist ones intended to resolve emergent behaviours at decadal to centennial scales. This paper addresses the challenge of mapping the feedback structure of processes controlling geomorphic system behaviour with reference to illustrative applications of Causal Loop Analysis at two study cases: (1) the erosion–accretion behaviour of graded (mixed) sediment beds, and (2) the local alongshore sediment fluxes of sand-rich shorelines. These case study examples are chosen on account of their central role in the quantitative modelling of geomorphological futures and as they illustrate different types of causation. Causal loop diagrams, a form of directed graph, are used to distil the feedback structure to reveal, in advance of more quantitative modelling, multi-response pathways and multiple outcomes. In the case of graded sediment bed, up to three different outcomes (no response, and two disequilibrium states) can be derived from a simple qualitative stability analysis. For the sand-rich local shoreline behaviour case, two fundamentally different responses of the shoreline (diffusive and anti-diffusive), triggered by small changes of the shoreline cross-shore position, can be inferred purely through analysis of the causal pathways. Explicit depiction of feedback-structure diagrams is beneficial when developing numerical models to explore coastal morphological futures. By explicitly mapping the feedbacks included and neglected within a model, the modeller can readily assess if critical feedback loops are included
Control Software for the SST-1M Small-Size Telescope prototype for the Cherenkov Telescope Array
The SST-1M is a 4-m Davies--Cotton atmospheric Cherenkov telescope optimized
to provide gamma-ray sensitivity above a few TeV. The SST-1M is proposed as
part of the Small-Size Telescope array for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA),
the first prototype has already been deployed. The SST-1M control software of
all subsystems (active mirror control, drive system, safety system,
photo-detection plane, DigiCam, CCD cameras) and the whole telescope itself
(master controller) uses the standard software design proposed for all CTA
telescopes based on the ALMA Common Software (ACS) developed to control the
Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). Each subsystem is represented by a
separate ACS component, which handles the communication to and the operation of
the subsystem. Interfacing with the actual hardware is performed via the OPC UA
communication protocol, supported either natively by dedicated industrial
standard servers (PLCs) or separate service applications developed to wrap
lower level protocols (e.g. CAN bus, camera slow control) into OPC UA. Early
operations of the telescope without the camera were already carried out. The
camera is fully assembled and is capable to perform data acquisition using

Toward optimization of postremission therapy for residual disease-positive patients with acute myeloid leukemia
Purpose:Despite the identification of several baseline prognostic indicators, the outcome of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is generally heterogeneous. The effects of autologous (AuSCT) or allogeneic stem-cell transplantation (SCT) are still under evaluation. Minimal residual disease (MRD) states may be essential for assigning patients to therapy-dependent risk categories. Patients and Methods: By multiparametric flow cytometry, we assessed the levels of MRD in 142 patients with AML who achieved complete remission after intensive chemotherapy. Results: A level of 3.5 x 10(-4) residual leukemia cells (RLCs) after consolidation therapy was established to identify MRD-negative and MRD-positive cases, with 5-year relapse-free survival (RFS) rates of 60% and 16%, respectively (P <.0001) and overall survival (OS) rates of 62% and 23%, respectively (P=.0001). Of patients (n = 77) who underwent a transplantation procedure (56 AuSCT and 21 SCT procedures); 42 patients (55%) were MRD positive (28 patients who underwent AuSCT and 14 patients who underwent SCT) and 35 patients (45%) were MRD negative (28 patients who underwent AuSCT and seven who underwent SCT). MRD-negative patients had a favorable prognosis, with only eight (22%) of 35 patients experiencing relapse, whereas 29 (69%) of 42 MRD-positive patients experienced relapse (P <.0001). In this high-risk group of 42 patients, we observed that 23 (82%) of 28 of those who underwent AuSCT experienced relapse, whereas six (43%) of 14 who underwent SCT experienced relapse (P=.014). Patients who underwent SCT also had a higher likelihood of RFS (47% v 14%). Conclusion A threshold of 3.5 x 10(-4) RLCs postconsolidation is critical for predicting disease outcome. MRD-negative patients have a good outcome regardless of the type of transplant they receive. In the MRD-positive group, AuSCT does not improve prognosis and SCT represents the primary option
Update on coronavirus disease 2019: Ophthalmic Manifestations and Adverse Reactions to Vaccination
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 was one of the most devastating public health issues in recent decades. The ophthalmology community is as concerned about the COVID-19 pandemic as the global public health community is, as COVID-19 was recognized to affect multiple organs in the human body, including the eyes, early in the course of the outbreak. Ophthalmic manifestations of COVID-19 are highly variable and could range from mild ocular surface abnormalities to potentially sight and life-Threatening orbital and neuro-ophthalmic diseases. Furthermore, ophthalmic manifestations may also be the presenting or the only findings in COVID-19 infections. Meanwhile, global vaccination campaigns to attain herd immunity in different populations are the major strategy to mitigate the pandemic. As novel vaccinations against COVID-19 emerged, so were reports on adverse ophthalmic reactions potentially related to such. As the world enters a post-pandemic state where COVID-19 continues to exist and evolve as an endemic globally, the ophthalmology community ought to be aware of and keep abreast of the latest knowledge of ophthalmic associations with COVID-19 and its vaccinations. This review is a summary of the latest literature on the ophthalmic manifestations of COVID-19 and the adverse ophthalmic reactions related to its vaccinations
