© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. The global population is ageing with many older adults suffering from age-related malnutrition, including micronutrient deficiencies. Adequate nutrient intake is vital to enable older adults to continue living independently and delay their institutionalisation, as well as to prevent deterioration of health status in those living in institutions. This systematic review investigated the insufficiency of trace minerals in older adults living independently and in institutions. We examined 28 studies following a cross-sectional or cohort design, including 7203 older adults (≥60) living independently in 13 Western countries and 2036 living in institutions in seven Western countries. The estimated average requirement (EAR) cut-off point method was used to calculate percentage insufficiency for eight trace minerals using extracted mean and standard deviation values. Zinc deficiency was observed in 31% of community-based women and 49% of men. This was higher for those in institutional care (50% and 66%, respectively). Selenium intakes were similarly compromised with deficiency in 49% women and 37% men in the community and 44% women and 27% men in institutions. We additionally found significant proportions of both populations showing insufficiency for iron, iodine and copper. This paper identifies consistent nutritional insufficiency for selenium, zinc, iodine and copper in older adults

Recent studies showed that remote sensing is an effective, efficient and reliable technique used in almost all the areas of earth sciences. Remote sensing as being a technique started with aerial photographs and then developed employing the multi-spectral satellite images. Nowadays, it benefits from hyper-spectral, RADAR and LIDAR data as well. This potential has widen its applicability in the various areas and professional disciplines much more efficiently as never been before. One of the areas that remote sensing has been applied well and has become one of the indispensable tools for the earth science’s scientists are geologic and mineral exploration studies and especially prospection stages of these studies. In this research, it was tried to determine and to map zeolite sites in Gördes region (Turkey) which were formed as alteration products having high level of water content and developed in volcanic rock beds by the help of remote sensing and GIS. The study area is about 400 km2 and located at the NorthEast of Manisa Province. The results confirmed that the zeolite areas obtained by classical exploration techniques can be determined using remote sensing techniques such as feature oriented principal component analysis. Other zeolite areas in the same scene were also determined or at least predicted by this computer learning process through the same remote sensing image analyses

The Importance of Strengthening Mother and Child Health Services during the First 1000 Days of Life: The Foundation of Optimum Health, Growth and Development

The first 1000 days of a child's life, spanning from the time of conception until 2 years of age, are a unique period of laying down the foundations of optimum health, growth, and development across the lifespan. However, the first 1000 days are also a period of enormous vulnerability. How mothers and children are cared for during this crucial time has a profound influence on a child's ability to grow, learn, and thrive.1 The role of the first 1000 days of life is well-described. However, investments in this key period are scarce and the provision of adequate health care services id insufficient. The aim of this report is to further raise the attention of decision-makers and health care officers and professionals, including pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, obstetricians, nurses, midwives, dieticians, and lactation consultants, on the importance of investing in health care services to support and empower parents and families during a most critical period of their children's life. In particular, we encourage the adoption of integrated strategies to establish adequate preventive efforts and a perspective shift to strengthen or develop where lacking, efficient health care services dedicated to the first 1000 days of life as the first line of prevention

Post-contrast FLAIR imaging in a patient with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES).

We herein present a case of delayed enhancement of CSF on fluidattenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging in a patient with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES). In our case despite the settled clinical setting of PRES initial MR scan was negative and on repeated FLAIR imaging increased CSF signal intensity was more conspicuous than subtle cortical involvement

Eltrombopag for the treatment of immune thrombocytopenia: The aegean region of Turkey experience

Objective: Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an immune-mediated disease characterized by transient or persistent decrease of the platelet count to less than 100x109/L. Although it is included in a benign disease group, bleeding complications may be mortal. With a better understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease, thrombopoietin receptor agonists, which came into use in recent years, seem to be an effective option in the treatment of resistant cases. This study aimed to retrospectively assess the efficacy, long-term safety, and tolerability of eltrombopag in Turkish patients with chronic ITP in the Aegean region of Turkey. Materials and Methods: Retrospective data of 40 patients with refractory ITP who were treated with eltrombopag in the Aegean region were examined and evaluated. Results: The total rate of response was 87%, and the median duration of response defined as the number of the platelets being over 50x109/L was 19.5 (interquartile range: 5-60) days. In one patient, venous sinus thrombosis was observed with no other additional risk factors due to or related to thrombosis. Another patient with complete response and irregular follow-up for 12 months was lost due to sudden death as the result of probable acute myocardial infarction. Conclusion: Although the responses to eltrombopag were satisfactory, patients need to be monitored closely for overshooting platelet counts as well as thromboembolic events. © 2015 Turkish Society of Hematology. When Models Interact with their Subjects: The Dynamics of Model Aware Systems

    Get PDF
A scientific model need not be a passive and static descriptor of its subject. If the subject is affected by the model, the model must be updated to explain its affected subject. In this study, two models regarding the dynamics of model aware systems are presented. The first explores the behavior of "prediction seeking" (PSP) and "prediction avoiding" (PAP) populations under the influence of a model that describes them. The second explores the publishing behavior of a group of experimentalists coupled to a model by means of confirmation bias. It is found that model aware systems can exhibit convergent random or oscillatory behavior and display universal 1/f noise. A numerical simulation of the physical experimentalists is compared with actual publications of neutron life time and {\Lambda} mass measurements and is in good quantitative agreement.Comment: Accepted for publication in PLoS-ON

There are various types of secondary school in our country. Some of these are general high schools, Anatolian high schools, technical vocational high schools , teacher high schools and religious high schools. In the Anatolian High Schools some courses are provided in the medium of English. Science courses are among these lessons. The purpose of this study is to conduct research into curriculum and total quality administration in order to assess the extents to which these courses meet individual and community needs. For this purpose, different questionnaires were administered to students, parents, headmasters, inspectors and English Science teachers in these schools. As a result of wide resource collection, a scientific evaluation has been achieved.Ülkemizde ortaöğretim kademesinde çeşitli okullar bulunmaktadır.
