On how religions could accidentally incite lies and violence: folktales as a cultural transmitter
Folklore has a critical role as a cultural transmitter, all the while being a socially accepted medium for the expressions of culturally contradicting wishes and conducts. In this study of Vietnamese folktales, through the use of Bayesian multilevel modeling and the Markov chain Monte Carlo technique, we offer empirical evidence for how the interplay between religious teachings (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism) and deviant behaviors (lying and violence) could affect a folktale’s outcome. The findings indicate that characters who lie and/or commit violent acts tend to have bad endings, as intuition would dictate, but when they are associated with any of the above Three Teachings, the final endings may vary. Positive outcomes are seen in cases where characters associated with Confucianism lie and characters associated with Buddhism act violently. The results supplement the worldwide literature on discrepancies between folklore and real-life conduct, as well as on the contradictory human behaviors vis-à-vis religious teachings. FTKHUIM: A fast and efficient method for mining top-k high-utility itemsets
High-utility itemset mining (HUIM) is an important task in the field of knowledge data
discovery. The large search space and huge number of HUIs are the consequences of applying HUIM
algorithms with an inappropriate user-defined minimum utility threshold value. Determining a suitable
threshold value to obtain the expected results is not a simple task and requires spending a lot of time.
For common users, it is difficult to define a minimum threshold utility for exploring the right number of
HUIs. On the one hand, if the threshold is set too high then the number of HUIs would not be enough.
On the other hand, if the threshold is set too low, too many HUIs will be mined, thus wasting both time and
memory. The top-k HUIs mining problem was proposed to solve this issue, and many effective algorithms
have since been introduced by researchers. In this research, a novel approach, namely FTKHUIM (Fast top k HUI Mining), is introduced to explore the top-k HUIs. One new threshold-raising strategy called RTU,
a transaction utility (TU)-based threshold-raising strategy, has also been shown to rapidly increase the speed
of top-k HUIM. The study also proposes a global structure to store utility values in the process of applying
raising-threshold strategies to optimize these strategies. The results of experiments on various datasets prove
that the FTKHUIM algorithm achieves better results with regard to both the time and search space needed.Web of Science1110480510478
Proteomics of Human Dendritic Cell Subsets Reveals Subset-Specific Surface Markers and Differential Inflammasome Function.
Dendritic cells (DCs) play a key role in orchestrating adaptive immune responses. In human blood, three distinct subsets exist: plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs) and BDCA3+ and CD1c+ myeloid DCs. In addition, a DC-like CD16+ monocyte has been reported. Although RNA-expression profiles have been previously compared, protein expression data may provide a different picture. Here, we exploited label-free quantitative mass spectrometry to compare and identify differences in primary human DC subset proteins. Moreover, we integrated these proteomic data with existing mRNA data to derive robust cell-specific expression signatures with more than 400 differentially expressed proteins between subsets, forming a solid basis for investigation of subset-specific functions. We illustrated this by extracting subset identification markers and by demonstrating that pDCs lack caspase-1 and only express low levels of other inflammasome-related proteins. Cu–Fe Incorporated Graphene-Oxide Nanocomposite as Highly Efficient Catalyst in the Degradation of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) from Aqueous Solution
Fe/graphene oxide and Cu–Fe/graphene oxide nanocomposite were synthesized by the atomic implantation method to study the photocatalytic degradation of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT). The synthesized nanocomposites were characterized by the XRD, N2 isotherms, SEM with EDX, TEM and XPS analysis. Characterization results have reported that oxides of Cu and Fe were uniformly distributed on graphene oxide and exited in the form of Cu+ and Fe2+ ions in Cu–Fe/graphene oxide nanocomposite. The high photocatalytic DDT removal efficiency 99.7% was obtained for Cu–Fe/graphene oxide under the optimal condition of 0.2 g/L catalyst, 15 mg/L H2O2 and pH 5. It was attributed to the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ by Cu+ ions and –OH radicals formation. However, it was dropped to 90.4% in the recycling study by leaching of iron and without a change in phase structure and morphology
Tumor-Induced Cholesterol Efflux from Macrophages Drives IL-4 Mediated Reprogramming and Tumor Progression
Tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) have been shown to have important roles in the malignant progression of various cancers. However, macrophages also posses intrinsic tumoricidal activity and can promote the activity of cytotoxic lymphocytes, but they rapidly adopt an alternative phenotype within tumors, associated with immune-suppression and trophic functions that support tumor growth. The mechanisms that promote TAM polarization in the tumor-microenvironment remain poorly understood, these mechanisms may represent important therapeutic targets to block the tumor-promoting functions of TAM and restore their anti-tumor potential. Here we have characterized TAM in a mouse model of metastatic ovarian cancer. We show that ovarian cancer cells promote membrane-cholesterol efflux and the depletion of lipid rafts from macrophages. Increased cholesterol efflux promoted IL-4 mediated reprogramming while inhibiting IFNγ-induced gene expression. These studies reveal an unexpected role for tumor-induced membrane-cholesterol efflux in driving the IL-4 signaling and the tumor-promoting functions of TAM, while rendering them refractory to pro-inflammatory stimuli. The impact of environmental and climatic variation on the spatiotemporal trends of hospitalized pediatric diarrhea in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
It is predicted that the integration of climate-based early warning systems into existing action plans will facilitate the timely provision of interventions to diarrheal disease epidemics in resource-poor settings. Diarrhea remains a considerable public health problem in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam and we aimed to quantify variation in the impact of environmental conditions on diarrheal disease risk across the city. Using all inpatient diarrheal admissions data from three large hospitals within HCMC, we developed a mixed effects regression model to differentiate district-level variation in risk due to environmental conditions from the overarching seasonality of diarrheal disease hospitalization in HCMC. We identified considerable spatial heterogeneity in the risk of all-cause diarrhea across districts of HCMC with low elevation and differential responses to flooding, air temperature, and humidity driving further spatial heterogeneity in diarrheal disease risk. The incorporation of these results into predictive forecasting algorithms will provide a powerful resource to aid diarrheal disease prevention and control practices in HCMC and other similar settings
BioModels—15 years of sharing computational models in life science
Computational modelling has become increasingly common in life science research. To provide a platform to support universal sharing, easy accessibility and model reproducibility, BioModels (https://www.ebi.ac.uk/biomodels/), a repository for mathematical models, was established in 2005. The current BioModels platform allows submission of models encoded in diverse modelling formats, including SBML, CellML, PharmML, COMBINE archive, MATLAB, Mathematica, R, Python or C++. The models submitted to BioModels are curated to verify the computational representation of the biological process and the reproducibility of the simulation results in the reference publication. The curation also involves encoding models in standard formats and annotation with controlled vocabularies following MIRIAM (minimal information required in the annotation of biochemical models) guidelines. BioModels now accepts large-scale submission of auto-generated computational models. With gradual growth in content over 15 years, BioModels currently hosts about 2000 models from the published literature. With about 800 curated models, BioModels has become the world’s largest repository of curated models and emerged as the third most used data resource after PubMed and Google Scholar among the scientists who use modelling in their research. Thus, BioModels benefits modellers by providing access to reliable and semantically enriched curated models in standard formats that are easy to share, reproduce and reuse
Enhanced Perpendicular Exchange Bias in Co/Pd Antidot Arrays
Magnetic nanostructures revealing the exchange bias (EB) effect have attracted much interest in recent years due to their promising applications in spintronics, magnetic sensing and recording devices with various functionalities. In this paper, we report on the perpendicular exchange bias effect in a multilayered thin film composed of [Co/Pd] ferromagnetic multilayers exchange-coupled to an antiferromagnetic IrMn. The film was deposited on a porous anodized titania template. Influences of the films’ surface morphology as well as the order of layers deposited on the EB effect were studied. The enhancements of the EB field HEB (up to 30%) and the coercive field HC (two times) were achieved in the nanoporous films relative to their continuous film counterparts, which could be attributed to the specific morphology of the porous surfaces
