    Large enhancement of deuteron polarization with frequency modulated microwaves

    We report a large enhancement of 1.7 in deuteron polarization up to values of 0.6 due to frequency modulation of the polarizing microwaves in a two liters polarized target using the method of dynamic nuclear polarization. This target was used during a deep inelastic polarized muon-deuteron scattering experiment at CERN. Measurements of the electron paramagnetic resonance absorption spectra show that frequency modulation gives rise to additional microwave absorption in the spectral wings. Although these results are not understood theoretically, they may provide a useful testing ground for the deeper understanding of dynamic nuclear polarization.Comment: 10 pages, including the figures coming in uuencoded compressed tar files in poltar.uu, which also brings cernart.sty and crna12.sty files neede

    Exclusive rho^0 muoproduction on transversely polarised protons and deuterons

    The transverse target spin azimuthal asymmetry A_UT in hard exclusive production of rho^0 mesons was measured at COMPASS by scattering 160 GeV/c muons off transversely polarised protons and deuterons. The measured asymmetry is sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip generalised parton distributions E^q, which are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks in the nucleon. The Q^2, x_B and p_t^2 dependence of A_UT is presented in a wide kinematic range. Results for deuterons are obtained for the first time. The measured asymmetry is small in the whole kinematic range for both protons and deuterons, which is consistent with the theoretical interpretation that contributions from GPDs E^u and E^d approximately cancel.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures and 4 tables, updated author lis

    We present a new measurement of the longitudinal spin asymmetry A_1^d and the spin-dependent structure function g_1^d of the deuteron in the range 1 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 100 GeV^2 and 0.004< x <0.7. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV polarised muon beam and a large polarised 6-LiD target.     The Spin-dependent Structure Function of the Proton g_1^p and a Test of the Bjorken Sum Rule

    The inclusive double-spin asymmetry, A_1^p, has been measured at COMPASS in deepinelastic polarised muon scattering off a large polarised NH3 target. The data, collected in the year 2007, cover the range Q2 > 1 (GeV/c)^2, 0.004 < x < 0.7 and improve the statistical precision of g_1^p(x) by a factor of two in the region x < 0.02. The new proton asymmetries are combined with those previously published for the deuteron to extract the non-singlet spin-dependent structure function g_1^NS(x,Q2). The isovector quark density, Delta_q_3(x,Q2), is evaluated from a NLO QCD fit of g_1^NS. The first moment of Delta_q3 is in good agreement with the value predicted by the Bjorken sum rule and corresponds to a ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants g_A/g_V = 1.28+-0.07(stat)+-0.10(syst).Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

    Quark helicity distributions from longitudinal spin asymmetries in muon-proton and muon-deuteron scattering

    Double-spin asymmetries for production of charged pions and kaons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic muon scattering have been measured by the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The data, obtained by scattering a 160 GeV muon beam off a longitudinally polarised NH_3 target, cover a range of the Bjorken variable x between 0.004 and 0.7. A leading order evaluation of the helicity distributions for the three lightest quarks and antiquark flavours derived from these asymmetries and from our previous deuteron data is presented. The resulting values of the sea quark distributions are small and do not show any sizable dependence on x in the range of the measurements. No significant difference is observed between the strange and antistrange helicity distributions, both compatible with zero. The integrated value of the flavour asymmetry of the helicity distribution of the light-quark sea, \Delta u-bar - \Delta d-bar, is found to be slightly positive, about 1.5 standard deviations away from zero.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure

    A statistical toolbox for metagenomics: assessing functional diversity in microbial communities

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The 99% of bacteria in the environment that are recalcitrant to culturing have spurred the development of metagenomics, a culture-independent approach to sample and characterize microbial genomes. Massive datasets of metagenomic sequences have been accumulated, but analysis of these sequences has focused primarily on the descriptive comparison of the relative abundance of proteins that belong to specific functional categories. More robust statistical methods are needed to make inferences from metagenomic data. In this study, we developed and applied a suite of tools to describe and compare the richness, membership, and structure of microbial communities using peptide fragment sequences extracted from metagenomic sequence data.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Application of these tools to acid mine drainage, soil, and whale fall metagenomic sequence collections revealed groups of peptide fragments with a relatively high abundance and no known function. When combined with analysis of 16S rRNA gene fragments from the same communities these tools enabled us to demonstrate that although there was no overlap in the types of 16S rRNA gene sequence observed, there was a core collection of operational protein families that was shared among the three environments.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results of comparisons between the three habitats were surprising considering the relatively low overlap of membership and the distinctively different characteristics of the three habitats. These tools will facilitate the use of metagenomics to pursue statistically sound genome-based ecological analyses.</p

    Search for heavy neutral leptons in electron-positron and neutral-pion final states with the MicroBooNE detector

    We present the first search for heavy neutral leptons (HNL) decaying into νe+e\nu e^+e^- or νπ0\nu\pi^0 final states in a liquid-argon time projection chamber using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector. The data were recorded synchronously with the NuMI neutrino beam from Fermilab's Main Injector corresponding to a total exposure of 7.01×10207.01 \times 10^{20} protons on target. We set upper limits at the 90%90\% confidence level on the mixing parameter Uμ42\lvert U_{\mu 4}\rvert^2 in the mass ranges 10mHNL15010\le m_{\rm HNL}\le 150 MeV for the νe+e\nu e^+e^- channel and 150mHNL245150\le m_{\rm HNL}\le 245 MeV for the νπ0\nu\pi^0 channel, assuming Ue42=Uτ42=0\lvert U_{e 4}\rvert^2 = \lvert U_{\tau 4}\rvert^2 = 0. These limits represent the most stringent constraints in the mass range 35<mHNL<17535<m_{\rm HNL}<175 MeV and the first constraints from a direct search for νπ0\nu\pi^0 decays.Comment: Version as accepted by Physical Review Letters, some presentational changes and updated references, no changes to result

    First measurement of quasi-elastic Λ\Lambda baryon production in muon anti-neutrino interactions in the MicroBooNE detector

    We present the first measurement of the cross section of Cabibbo-suppressed Λ\Lambda baryon production, using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector when exposed to the neutrinos from the Main Injector beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data analyzed correspond to 2.2×10202.2 \times 10^{20} protons on target of neutrino mode running and 4.9×10204.9 \times 10^{20} protons on target of anti-neutrino mode running. An automated selection is combined with hand scanning, with the former identifying five candidate Λ\Lambda production events when the signal was unblinded, consistent with the GENIE prediction of 5.3±1.15.3 \pm 1.1 events. Several scanners were employed, selecting between three and five events, compared with a prediction from a blinded Monte Carlo simulation study of 3.7±1.03.7 \pm 1.0 events. Restricting the phase space to only include Λ\Lambda baryons that decay above MicroBooNE's detection thresholds, we obtain a flux averaged cross section of 2.01.7+2.2×10402.0^{+2.2}_{-1.7} \times 10^{-40} cm2/^2/Ar, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are combined

    First Measurement of Differential Cross Sections for Muon Neutrino Charged Current Interactions on Argon with a Two-proton Final State in the MicroBooNE Detector

    We present the first measurement of differential cross sections for charged-current muon neutrino interactions on argon with one muon, two protons, and no pions in the final state. Such interactions leave the target nucleus in a two-particle two-hole state; these states are of great interest, but currently there is limited information about their production in neutrino-nucleus interactions. Detailed investigations of the production of two-particle two-hole states are vital to support upcoming experiments exploring the nature of the neutrino, and the development of the liquid-argon time-projection-chamber has made possible the isolation of such final states. The opening angle between the two protons, the angle between the total proton momentum and the muon, and the total transverse momentum of the final state system are sensitive to the underlying physics processes as embodied in a variety of models. Realistic initial-state momentum distributions are shown to be important in reproducing the data.Comment: To be submitted to PR
