    A search for new physics in central exclusive production using the missing mass technique with the CMS detector and the CMS-TOTEM precision proton spectrometer

    A generic search is presented for the associated production of a Z boson or a photon with an additional unspecified massive particle X, pp → pp + Z/γ + X, in proton-tagged events from proton–proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV, recorded in 2017 with the CMS detector and the CMS-TOTEM precision proton spectrometer. The missing mass spectrum is analysed in the 600–1600 GeV range and a fit is performed to search for possible deviations from the background expectation. No significant excess in data with respect to the background predictions has been observed. odelindependent upper limits on the visible production cross section of pp → pp + Z/γ + X are set

    Total And Immobilized Enzymatic Activity Of Organic Materials Before And After Composting

    The evaluation of residual organic materials as a source of enzymatic activities immobilized in the humus matrix is a little explored research area, particularly in the case of organic materials derived from municipal wastes. Enzymes catalyze most soil reactions essential for soil functionality. The advantage of humus enzyme-complexes (immobilized enzymes) with regards to free enzymes is that the former are protected in the humic colloid, being more resistant to denaturing agents and other adverse soil conditions. This explains the interest in use of organic wastes (which are produced in an increasingly amount and consequently are economical) as a source of immobilized enzymes, which could be concentrated and used to improve the quality of degraded or contaminated soils. The goal of this study was (i) to assess the potential of sewage sludge (SS) and the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW), as well as their respective composts (CSS and CMSW) as sources of enzymes, (ii) to determine the proportion of such enzymes which are immobilized in the humic matrix of these organic materials, and (iii) to determine the effect of the composting process on the total and the immobilized enzymatic activities of the organic materials. Dehydrogenase (DHA), urease, protease-BAA, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), p-glucosidase (GLA) and o-diphenol oxidase (DPO) activities were determined both in the organic materials and in their humic extracts (except DHA). Sewage sludge had the highest total values of urease, protease-BAA, ALP and DHA activity (12.7 pmol NH +-N g-1 h-1, 40.6 μmol NH+-N g-1 h-1, 75.7 μmol PNP g-1 h-1 and 0.3 pmol INTF g-1 h-1, respectively), which decreased with composting, but MSW had the highest total value of DPO activity. For both organic materials, a low percentage of total enzymatic activities were linked to humus (0.6-22%), except in the case of DPO activity. The SS and MSW composting process had a positive effect on the urease, protease-BAA, DPO and ALP immobilization in the humic matrix, as reflected by the higher immobilized activity/total activity ratios in the compost than in the fresh materials.Peer reviewe

    {Search for direct production of GeV-scale resonances decaying to a pair of muons in proton-proton collisions at s \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV}

    A search for direct production of low-mass dimuon resonances is performed using = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment during the 2017–2018 operation of the CERN LHC with an integrated luminosity of 96.6 fb−1. The search exploits a dedicated high-rate trigger stream that records events with two muons with transverse momenta as low as 3 GeV but does not include the full event information. The search is performed by looking for narrow peaks in the dimuon mass spectrum in the ranges of 1.1–2.6 GeV and 4.2–7.9 GeV. No significant excess of events above the expectation from the standard model background is observed. Model-independent limits on production rates of dimuon resonances within the experimental fiducial acceptance are set. Competitive or world’s best limits are set at 90% confidence level for a minimal dark photon model and for a scenario with two Higgs doublets and an extra complex scalar singlet (2HDM+S). Values of the squared kinetic mixing coefficient ε2 in the dark photon model above 10−6 are excluded over most of the mass range of the search. In the 2HDM+S, values of the mixing angle sin(θH) above 0.08 are excluded over most of the mass range of the search with a fixed ratio of the Higgs doublets vacuum expectation tan β = 0.5

    Search for W ` bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark at root s=13 TeV in the hadronic final state

    A search is performed for W ‘ bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark in the all-hadronic final state, in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV. The analyzed data were collected by the CMS experiment between 2016 and 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137fb(-1). Deep neural network algorithms are used to identify the jet initiated by the bottom quark and the jet containing the decay products of the top quark when the W ‘ boson from the top quark decays hadronically. No excess above the estimated standard model background is observed. Upper limits on the production cross sections of W ‘ bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark are set. Both left- and right-handed W ‘ bosons with masses below 3.4TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, and the most stringent limits to date on W ‘ bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark in the all-hadronic final state are obtained.     Assessing the ecotoxicity of gold mine tailings utilizing earthworm and microbial assays

    Problems associated with mining are the disposal of wastes on tailing disposal facilities (TDFs). The aim of this study was to determine the ecotoxicity of gold mine tailings by using earthworm bioassays, earthworm biomarkers and enzymatic analyses. End points included changes in biomass, reproduction, lysosomal membrane stability, tissue metal concentrations, and selected enzymatic activities. Results indicated high concentrations of Ni in the material as well as bioaccumulation of lead and arsenic in the earthworm body tissue after exposure. Enzymatic activity was higher in revegetated tailings than in unrehabilitated tailings. It was concluded that TDF and surrounding areas have an acidic pH which affects earthworms and metal bioavailability. Soil enzymatic activities were a sensitive indicator of metal pollution in mining areas. Growth, reproduction and lysosomal membrane stability of earthworms have also been shown to be sensitive end points to assess the ecotoxic effects of gold TD

    International audienceA search for nonresonant Higgs boson (H) pair production via gluon and vector boson (V) fusion is performed in the four-bottom-quark final state, using proton-proton collision data at 13 TeV corresponding to 138  fb-1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analysis targets Lorentz-boosted H pairs identified using a graph neural network. It constrains the strengths relative to the standard model of the H self-coupling and the quartic VVHH couplings, κ2V, excluding κ2V=0 for the first time, with a significance of 6.3 standard deviations when other H couplings are fixed to their standard model values
