This text offers an approach to the basic concept of Dasein, concept that helps to get an understanding of Being and Time. In front of the traditional interpretation that reduces the concept of Being-there (Dasein) to human existence, I show how the There (Da) of Being-there not only refers to the openness of human existence and its existential traits, but that it also points at the question of the meaning of being in general. Calculus III: Under the Influence of Peer Instruction

    Get PDF
In peer Instruction, students engage with core course concepts and then explain those concepts to one another in small groups. Unlike in lecture format, peer instruction involves every student in the class. In Spring 2019, the first authot began using a modified version of peer instruction in Calculus III classes. He started each class by discussing important Calculus III concepts from three standpoints (the formula, the geometry behind the formula, and the physics behind the formula). During the last 20 minutes of each 50-minute class session, he polled the students using questions in the “Goldilocks Zone” – not too hard and not too easy, but just right for Calculus III students. These questions ignited student-to-student discussions. Students’ attendance and achievement have improved. The paper also describes how peer instruction has influenced the first author\u27s own instructional practices

Amplitude differences of evoked alpha and gamma oscillations in two different age groups

    No full text
The aim of this study was to investigate whether the amplitude of gamma-band activity is influenced by the factor age. We examined alpha- and gamma-band EEG activity and event-related potentials (ERPs) of 12 subjects. Six subjects constituted the younger (mean age=36.6 years) and another six the older age group (mean age=47.6 years). Subjects performed a visual discrimination task which required a response to Kanizsa squares (targets) among Kanizsa-triangles and non-Kanizsa figures. The ERPs of the younger group revealed a significantly larger N170 amplitude. The amplitudes of evoked alpha- and gamma-band activity were also found to be significantly higher in the younger group. We discuss the implications of these findings and possible reasons for a change of the oscillatory activity in the older age group

Testing temporal frames of colorectal cancer risks: evidence from randomized online experiments

Low perceived risk of is associated with a low probability of engaging in risk preventive behaviours. Temporal framing has been suggested to make the risk seem higher, as narrower time frames appear to increase perceived risk and intentions to engage in risk-preventive behaviours. In two online experiments, we tested how manipulating risk information about colorectal cancer (CRC) influenced risk perception and preventive behaviours. 902 men and women aged 45–54 were recruited from an English online panel. Study 1 (N = 132) investigated how communicating CRC mortality instead of incidence rates influences risk perception, using both yearly and daily frames. In study 2 (N = 770), CRC incidence was described as occurring yearly, daily or hourly. The primary outcome measures were risk perception, intention to engage in preventive behaviours and whether participants chose to read information about ways to reduce CRC risk or skip it to finish the survey. Study 1 did not find a difference in intentions based on information about the risk of developing vs the risk of dying of CRC. Study 2 found that, while communicating CRC incidence occurring as every day increased information-seeking behaviour compared to every year and every hour (57.4% vs 45.9% vs 45.6%, p = 0.012), individuals in the daily condition were less likely to get all comprehension questions right (69.9% vs 78.2% vs 85.0%, respectively, p = 0.015). Temporal framing had no impact on perceived risk or intentions to engage in risk-reducing behaviours. While manipulating risk information in terms of temporal framing did not increase perceived risk, it may influence people’s decision to engage with the information in the first place
