    Investigation of chlorine radical chemistry in the Eyjafjallajkull volcanic plume using observed depletions in non-methane hydrocarbons

    As part of the effort to understand volcanic plume composition and chemistry during the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajkull, the CARIBIC atmospheric observatory was deployed for three special science flights aboard a Lufthansa passenger aircraft. Measurements made during these flights included the collection of whole air samples, which were analyzed for non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs). Hydrocarbon concentrations in plume samples were found to be reduced to levels below background, with relative depletions characteristic of reaction with chlorine radicals (Cl). Recent observations of halogen oxides in volcanic plumes provide evidence for halogen radical chemistry, but quantitative data for free halogen radical concentrations in volcanic plumes were absent. Here we present the first observation-based calculations of Cl radical concentrations in volcanic plumes, estimated from observed NMHC depletions. Inferred Cl concentrations were between 1.3 × 10 and 6.6 × 10 Cl cm. The relationship between NMHC variability and local lifetimes was used to investigate the ratio between OH and Cl within the plume, with [OH]/[Cl] estimated to be ∼37.     Search for supersymmetry with a dominant R-parity violating LQDbar couplings in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130GeV to 172 GeV

    A search for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption that R-parity is violated via a dominant LQDbar coupling has been performed using the data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies of 130-172 GeV. The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. This result is translated into lower limits on the masses of charginos, neutralinos, sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks. For instance, for m_0=500 GeV/c^2 and tan(beta)=sqrt(2) charginos with masses smaller than 81 GeV/c^2 and neutralinos with masses smaller than 29 GeV/c^2 are excluded at the 95% confidence level for any generation structure of the LQDbar coupling.Comment: 32 pages, 30 figure

    Unraveling the role of local ablative therapies for patients with metastatic soft tissue sarcoma – a retrospective multicenter study of the Bavarian university hospitals

    Background Local ablative therapies (LAT) are increasingly used in patients with metastatic soft tissue sarcoma (STS), yet evidence-based standards are lacking. This study aimed to assess the impact of LAT on survival of metastatic STS patients and to identify prognostic factors. Methods In this retrospective multicenter study, 246 STS patients with metastatic disease who underwent LAT on tumor board recommendation between 2017 and 2021 were analyzed. A mixed effects model was applied to evaluate multiple survival events per patient. Results Median overall survival (OS) after first metastasis was 5.4 years with 1-, 2- and 5-year survival rates of 93.7, 81.7, and 53.1%, respectively. A treatment-free interval ≥12 months and treatment of liver metastases were positively correlated with progression-free survival (PFS) after LAT (HR=0.61, p=0.00032 and HR=0.52, p=0.0081, respectively). A treatment-free interval ≥12 months and treatment of metastatic lesions in a single organ site other than lung and liver were positive prognostic factors for OS after first LAT (HR=0.50, p=0.028 and HR=0.40, p=0.026, respectively) while rare histotypes and LAT other than surgery and radiotherapy were negatively associated with OS after first LAT (HR=2.56, p=0.020 and HR=3.87, p=0.025). Additional systemic therapy was independently associated with a PFS benefit in patients ≤60 years with ≥4 metastatic lesions (for max. diameter of treated lesions ≤2cm: HR=0.32, p=0.02 and >2cm: HR=0.20, p=0.0011, respectively). Conclusion This multicenter study conducted at six German university hospitals underlines the value of LAT in metastatic STS. The exceptionally high survival rates are likely to be associated with patient selection and treatment in specialized sarcoma centers

    A metagenomic portrait of the microbial community responsible for two decades of bioremediation of poly-contaminated groundwater

    Biodegradation of pollutants is a sustainable and cost-effective solution to groundwater pollution. Here, we investigate microbial populations involved in biodegradation of poly-contaminants in a pipeline for heavily contaminated groundwater. Groundwater moves from a polluted park to a treatment plant, where an aerated bioreactor effectively removes the contaminants. While the biomass does not settle in the reactor, sediment is collected afterwards and used to seed the new polluted groundwater via a backwash cycle. The pipeline has successfully operated since 1999, but the biological components in the reactor and the contaminated park groundwater have never been described. We sampled seven points along the pipeline, representing the entire remediation process, and characterized the changing microbial communities using genome-resolved metagenomic analysis. We assembled 297 medium- and high-quality metagenome-assembled genome sequences representing on average 46.3% of the total DNA per sample. We found that the communities cluster into two distinct groups, separating the anaerobic communities in the park groundwater from the aerobic communities inside the plant. In the park, the community is dominated by members of the genus Sulfuricurvum, while the plant is dominated by generalists from the order Burkholderiales. Known aromatic compound biodegradation pathways are four times more abundant in the plant-side communities compared to the park-side. Our findings provide a genome-resolved portrait of the microbial community in a highly effective groundwater treatment system that has treated groundwater with a complex contamination profile for two decades

    A technique to train new oculomotor behavior in patients with central macular scotomas during reading related tasks using scanning laser ophthalmoscopy: immediate functional benefits and gains retention

    BACKGROUND: Reading with a central scotoma involves the use of preferred retinal loci (PRLs) that enable both letter resolution and global viewing of word. Spontaneously developed PRLs however often privilege spatial resolution and, as a result, visual span is commonly limited by the position of the scotoma. In this study we designed and performed the pilot trial of a training procedure aimed at modifying oculomotor behavior in subjects with central field loss. We use an additional fixation point which, when combined with the initial PRL, allows the fulfillment of both letter resolution and global viewing of words. METHODS: The training procedure comprises ten training sessions conducted with the scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO). Subjects have to read single letters and isolated words varying in length, by combining the use of their initial PRL with the one of an examiner's selected trained retinal locus (TRL). We enrolled five subjects to test for the feasibility of the training technique. They showed stable maculopathy and persisting major reading difficulties despite previous orthoptic rehabilitation. We evaluated ETDRS visual acuity, threshold character size for single letters and isolated words, accuracy for paragraphed text reading and reading strategies before, immediately after SLO training, and three months later. RESULTS: Training the use of multiple PRLs in patients with central field loss is feasible and contributes to adapt oculomotor strategies during reading related tasks. Immediately after SLO training subjects used in combination with their initial PRL the examiner's selected TRL and other newly self-selected PRLs. Training gains were also reflected in ETDRS acuity, threshold character size for words of different lengths and in paragraphed text reading. Interestingly, subjects benefited variously from the training procedure and gains were retained differently as a function of word length. CONCLUSION: We designed a new procedure for training patients with central field loss using scanning laser ophthalmoscopy. Our initial results on the acquisition of newly self-selected PRLs and the development of new oculomotor behaviors suggest that the procedure aiming primarily at developing an examiner's selected TRL might have initiated a more global functional adaptation process
