    Monitoring training loads in elite tennis

    Training load (TL) is influenced by both training volume and training intensity. A precise understanding of the TLs completed during training is crucial to achieve desirable training outcomes and to avoid overtraining. TL can be monitored in many different ways; however, we recommend the session-rate of perceived exertion (session-RPE) method for quantifying TL because of its low cost and because it is easy to understand and relatively simple to implement. In this report, we provide data regarding TLs collected during the 2008 Roland Garros Tournament. Our experience in tennis suggests the session-RPE method to be a valuable tool that can be used to control training and to avoid excessive TLs. We also believe that accurate monitoring of TL will enable the coach to better understand of the sports training process, ultimately leading to the improvement of performance

    One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass versus Roux en Y Gastric Bypass as Salvage Technique after Failed Gastric Band: a Retrospective Analysis of 80 Cases

    The classical “Roux en Y Gastric Bypass” (RYGBP) is still the standard technique between all the ones being used nowadays. The “One anastomosis gastric bypass” (OAGBP), is an evolution of the “Minigastic bypass” described by Robert Rutledge in 2001, is a well known and progressively frequent but still controversial technique. In our group, after an experience of 10 years using the RYGBP as a salvage surgery after failed gastric banding, in 132 cases, we decided to adopt the OAGBP as our preferential bariatric technique also in this situation. The theoretical main reasons for that shift are related to the increased safety, maximized weight loss, long term weight loss maintenance and reversibility of the operation. Method: Retrospectively we evaluated data of the surgical management of revisional cases for conversion, after failed or complicated gastric bands to gastric bypass. We selected the last 40 cases of each technique since May 2010. Results: All cases were performed by laparoscopy without any conversion. In both groups the conversion has been performed in one single step (17 cases, 42,5%). Data showed lower morbidity with OAGBP (2,5% against 7,5%) and better weight loss in theOAGBP cohort after a median follow up of 16months (67%against 55%) in patients revised after gastric band failure or complications. None had statistic significance (p>0,1) by the chi-square contingency table analysis.Conclusion: It seems to there is a difference in favour of OAGBP for conversion of complicated gastric bands. In this study we didn’t found statistic significance probably because of the short numbers. Prospective and more powerful studies are necessary to evaluate the benefit of the studied procedure

    Laurus azorica : Valorization through Its Phytochemical Study and Biological Activities

    Laurus azorica (Seub.) Franco is an endemic species from the Azores, traditionally used in all the islands as a seasoning in cooking. The studies carried out with this species refer mainly to its essential oils. The study that was developed here allowed, for the first time, to determine the chemical composition and biological activities of the ethanol extract, fractions, and pure compounds from L. azorica. The hexane fraction was analyzed by GC–MS and revealed the presence of 48 compounds, comprising mainly fatty acids, fatty alcohols and terpenes, the family of fatty alcohols identified here for the first time in the genus Laurus. Three sesquiterpene lactones—costunolide, 11,13-dehydrosantonin and reynosin—were isolated for the first time in L. azorica from the same fraction, and structurally characterized using spectroscopic techniques. The compounds identified belong to families known to have relevant medicinal and nutritional properties. Regarding antioxidant activities, the results obtained showed a moderate radical scavenging effect of extracts and fractions, while in the β-carotene bleaching assay, costunolide was shown to be the most active (IC₅₀ = 4.08 ± 0.76 μg/mL), about 3.6 times more active than the standard, gallic acid, which presented IC₅₀ = 14.56 ± 0.13 μg/mL. Although the inhibition of extracellular matrix-degrading enzymes was not detected, the ethanol extract showed good inhibitory activity of tyrosinase, with an IC₅₀ of 12.04 ± 0.23 μg/mL, only 6.6-fold lower than the control kojic acid.     The Efficacy of LUCAS in Cardiac Arrest

    Introduction: Chest compression is the basic technique of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in patients with cardiac arrest. The quality and early performance of CPR is critical to improve the prognosis and chances of restoring spontaneous blood flow. Today we have manual compressions and mechanical chest compression devices. Objective: The aim of this study is to clarify the importance of the LUCAS system (The Lund University Cardiac Arrest System) in CPR. Material and methods: A systematic review of the literature by mobilizing the descriptors "Cardiac Arrest", "Lucas Efficacy" and "nursing", using the methodological head. Ten conceivable databases were selected, between 2010-2020, and seven articles were included for analysis. Results and discussion: The results of the studies are different, as four of the studies indicate that LUCAS is fully effective, particularly in fatigue and transport, but two of them do not recognise its full effectiveness. One of the studies mentions that the fact that compression by the automatic device is effective does not necessarily reflect a better result. The vast majority of the studies recognise the need for further studies to make more convincing decisions. Conclusion: Mechanical chest compression devices can improve patient outcome if used appropriately in the event of cardiac arrest. The hemodynamic performance of the LUCAS compression-decompression system is, according to some results, better than manual CPR. However, the quality of the current evidence is not sufficient.     Monitoring of fumarole discharge and CO2 soil degassing in the Azores: contribution to volcanic surveillance and public health risk assessment

    Fluid geochemistry monitoring in the Azores involves the regular sampling and analysis of gas discharges from fumaroles and measurements of CO2 diffuse soil gas emissions. Main degassing areas under monitoring are associated with hydrothermal systems of active central volcanoes in S. Miguel, Terceira and Graciosa islands. Fumarole discharge analysis since 1991 show that apart from steam these gas emissions are CO2 dominated with H2S, H2, CH4 and N2 in minor amounts. Mapping of CO2 diffuse soil emissions in S. Miguel Island lead to the conclusion that some inhabited areas are located within hazard-zones. At Furnas village, inside Furnas volcano caldera, about 62% of the 896 houses are within the CO2 anomaly, 5% being in areas of moderate to high risk. At Ribeira Seca, on the north flank of Fogo volcano, few family houses were evacuated when CO2 concentrations in the air reached 8 mol%. To assess and analyse the CO2 soil flux emissions, continuous monitoring stations were installed in S. Miguel (2), Terceira and Graciosa islands. The statistical analysis of the data showed that some meteorological parameters influence the CO2 flux. The average of CO2 flux in S. Miguel stations ranges from 250 g/m2/d at Furnas volcano to 530 g/m2/d at Fogo volcano. At Terceira Island it is about 330 g/m2/d and at Graciosa 4400 g/m2/d

    t- Introduction: Since the first official case of COVID-19 in China in December 2019, researchers have been trying to uncover the mechanism of action of the severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (Sars-CoV-2), which attacks several organs in addition to the lungs and causes circulatory changes that can lead to death not only from lung failure but also due to commitment of other organs. Objective: The aim of this study is to find out the neurological consequences of COVID-19. Material and methods: A systematic review of the literature was concretised by mobilizing the descriptors: "Sars-Cov-2", "coronavirus infections" and "Neurological Consequences". Databases were selected and seven articles were included for analysis. Results and discussion: Although the effects of Sars-CoV-2 on the lung are exemplary and frightening, the long-term effects on the nervous system may be greater and even more overwhelming, as the regeneration of nerve tissue is difficult and can lead to general disability, as the nervous system coordinates the functions of the entire body. All studies show the presence of any kind of injury (mild or severe) to Central Nervous System, but some of them highlight the need for further studies to have great certainty. Conclusion: It can be said that the studies all agree on the possibility of existing neurological sequelae and a majority agree on the need for other studies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    First Results of the LUX Dark Matter Experiment

    LUX (Large Underground Xenon) is a dark matter direct detection experiment deployed at the 4850' level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, SD, operating a 370 kg dual-phase xenon TPC. Results of the first WIMP search run were presented in late 2013, for the analysis of 85.3 live-days with a fiducial volume of 118 kg, taken during the period of April to August 2013. The experiment exhibited a sensitivity to spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering with a minimum upper limit on the cross section of 7.6×10−46cm2 at a WIMP mass of 33 GeV/c 2 , becoming the world's leading WIMP search result, in conflict with several previous claimed hints of discovery.Peer Reviewe

    FPGA-based Trigger System for the LUX Dark Matter Experiment

    LUX is a two-phase (liquid/gas) xenon time projection chamber designed to detect nuclear recoils resulting from interactions with dark matter particles. Signals from the detector are processed with an FPGA-based digital trigger system that analyzes the incoming data in real-time, with just a few microsecond latency. The system enables first pass selection of events of interest based on their pulse shape characteristics and 3D localization of the interactions. It has been shown to be >99% efficient in triggering on S2 signals induced by only few extracted liquid electrons. It is continuously and reliably operating since its full underground deployment in early 2013.
