3d modelling between ideation, geometry, and surveyed architecture: the case of the vaulted system of ‘Appartamento di Mezzanotte’ in Palazzo Carignano

    Get PDF
The present work focuses on the study of vaulted systems by Guarini, by virtue of the paradigmatic role that Guarini assumes in the field of studies dedicated to this topic. The research has been compared in-depth analysis aimed at connecting relevant data with archival drawings, historical studies and treatises in order to use digital representation in heuristic terms. The attempt is to delineate and explain, through the analysis of architectural artifacts, the links between theorizations, transformations of reference geometric models and buildings. The ‘Appartamento di Mezzanotte’ (northern apartment) of Palazzo Carignano was choosen as a case study, because the different vaulted rooms that compose it witness the creative inspiration by Guarini and allow to structure a study that produce interesting results in relation to the connections between theoretical studies, research and cultural heritage. The use of digital representation integrated with photo-modelling (SfM) tries to create new tools to investigate these different fields in their absolute and relationship value

Quasideterministic generation of maximally entangled states of two mesoscopic atomic ensembles by adiabatic quantum feedback

We introduce an efficient, quasideterministic scheme to generate maximally entangled states of two atomic ensembles. The scheme is based on quantum nondemolition measurements of total atomic populations and on adiabatic quantum feedback conditioned by the measurements outputs. The high efficiency of the scheme is tested and confirmed numerically for ideal photodetection as well as in the presence of losses.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, title changed, revised version published on Phys. Multi-scale analysis of the European airspace using network community detection

    Get PDF
We show that the European airspace can be represented as a multi-scale traffic network whose nodes are airports, sectors, or navigation points and links are defined and weighted according to the traffic of flights between the nodes. By using a unique database of the air traffic in the European airspace, we investigate the architecture of these networks with a special emphasis on their community structure. We propose that unsupervised network community detection algorithms can be used to monitor the current use of the airspaces and improve it by guiding the design of new ones. Specifically, we compare the performance of three community detection algorithms, also by using a null model which takes into account the spatial distance between nodes, and we discuss their ability to find communities that could be used to define new control units of the airspace.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figure

Using XML as a means to access legislative documents: Italian and foreign experiences

    Get PDF
In this paper we describe the goals and the organisation of the ongoing project "Norme in Rete" (NIR --- http://www.normeinrete.it), which involves several important Italian institutions and organisations. This project aims at the production of tools for the access to Italian normative documents, and data formats for the standardisation of the text of laws and rules both national and local. One of its many goals is the conversion of the national law corpus into XML.Within the context of this project, our effort has concentrated on the development of an XML DTD already, and of an XML Schema very soon, to describe Italian national and local laws. We illustrate in this paper the overall structure of the DTDs. They are organised in a stricter, normative set of rules, with normative power, for new law drafts, and of a looser, descriptive set of rules for existing documents over which no rules can be imposed. In this paper we examine both types of DTD (strict and loose), their global organisation, the modules for legal elements, for textual and tabular tags (resembling HTML), and for modular, generic elements, that allow easy extendibility to the DTD. Also the treatment of meta-information is examined in this paper. We produce a short account of several analogous experiences in Northern Europe, carried out by both public institutions and private legal publishers. Mention is also made of the European Union\u27s similar projects

AI+AR: Cultural Heritage, Museum Institutions, Plastic Models and Prototyping. A State of Art

    Get PDF
The links between representation and artificial intelligence (AI) invade many fields of architectural research, recording continuous and significant advances: they require, on the one hand, a constant update of the state of the art and, on the other hand, careful consideration of the role of Representation in interdisciplinary research in this field. The present contribution intends to investigate these intertwining in some of the most frequented research fields in recent years: the valorization and communication of Cultural Heritage and cultural tourism, the experiences in the museum field, the research on the role of the prototype within the processes of artificial intelligence applied to architecture

Hyaluronic acid: perspectives in upper aero-digestive tract. A systematic review

    Get PDF
Background: To date, topical therapies guarantee a better delivery of high concentrations of pharmacologic agents to the mucosa of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT). The use of topical drugs, which are able to reduce mucosal inflammation and to improve healing tissues, can represent a relevant therapeutic advance. Topical sodium hyaluronate (SH) has recently been recognized as adjuvant treatment in the chronic inflammatory disease of the UADT. Aims: The aim of our work was to review the published literature regarding all the potential therapeutic effects of SH in the chronic inflammatory disease of UADT. Methods: Relevant published studies were searched in Pubmed, Google Scholar, Ovid using ("sodium hyaluronate" and "upper airways") or Medical Subject Headings. Results: At the end of our selection process, sixteen publications have been included. Six of them in the post-operative period of nasal-sinus surgery, 2 of them in pediatric patients affected by recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, 4 of them in reducing symptoms and preventing exacerbations of chronic upper airways in adult population, 4 of them in patients with chronic inflammatory disease of UADT, including gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD). Conclusions: Topical administration of SH plays a pivotkey role in the postoperative phase of patients undergoing FESS and nasal surgery, and positive results are generally observed in all the patients suffering from UADT chronic inflammatory disease

The Rivellino degli Invalidi and the fortification system of Turin

This contribution, of a multidisciplinary nature, connects the very recent digital survey of the Rivellino degli Invalidi with the decades-long archaeological studies culminating with the 2015-2016 excavations and with the historical cartography that reveals the substantial consistency with the digital survey in terms of position, geometry and shape of the revelin

BANDED VAULTS IN TURIN: TLS SURVEY, GEOMETRIC INTERPRETATION, DIGITAL RE-CONSTRUCTION, BETWEEN DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION. PALAZZO CAPRIS DI CIGLIÈ

    Get PDF
This contribution intends to focus attention on the banded vault (‘a fascioni’) that characterizes the atrium of the Capris di Cigliè Palace in Turin, whose construction is dated around 1730 and is attributed to Gian Giacomo Plantery (1680 - 1756). The work of survey, analysis, interpretation and digital modeling has been organized in phases (detailed respectively in the next paragraphs) which have allowed us to: study the criteria of architectural-geometric composition at the base of the complex vaulted system that is the object of the present study and to relate them to the most usual operative practices of construction, in particular to the realization and arrangement of the centerings; organize the survey on the basis of the main treatise and manual sources, in order to choose the most appropriate working methods; analyze survey data and set up a parametric model of geometric interpretation; make a comparison between the survey data and the interpretive model. In particular, the phases of geometric reading and interpretation, parametric modeling and discussion of the results were structured with the aim of studying in detail the different arches that define the structure of the banded vault
