    Multi-Level Sensory Interpretation and Adaptation in a Mobile Cube

    Signals from sensors are often analyzed in a sequence of steps, starting with the raw sensor data and eventually ending up with a classification or abstraction of these data. This paper will give a practical example of how the same information can be trained and used to initiate multiple interpretations of the same data on different, application-oriented levels. Crucially, the focus is on expanding embedded analysis software, rather than adding more powerful, but possibly resource-hungry, sensors. Our illustration of this approach involves a tangible input device the shape of a cube that relies exclusively on lowcost accelerometers. The cube supports calibration with user supervision, it can tell which of its sides is on top, give an estimate of its orientation relative to the user, and recognize basic gestures

    VoodooFlash: authoring across physical and digital form

    Design tools that integrate hardware and software components facilitate product design work across aspects of physical form and user interaction, but at the cost of requiring designers to work with other than their accustomed programming tools. In this paper we introduce VoodooFlash, a tool designed to build on the widespread use of Flash while facilitating design work across physical and digital components. VoodooFlash extends the existing practice of authoring interactive applications in terms of arranging components on a virtual stage, and provides a physical stage on which controls can be arranged, linked to software components, and appropriated with other physical design materials

    FM radio: family interplay with sonic mementos

    Digital mementos are increasingly problematic, as people acquire large amounts of digital belongings that are hard to access and often forgotten. Based on fieldwork with 10 families, we designed a new type of embodied digital memento, the FM Radio. It allows families to access and play sonic mementos of their previous holidays. We describe our underlying design motivation where recordings are presented as a series of channels on an old fashioned radio. User feedback suggests that the device met our design goals: being playful and intriguing, easy to use and social. It facilitated family interaction, and allowed ready access to mementos, thus sharing many of the properties of physical mementos that we intended to trigger

    Entanglement degradation of cavity modes due to the dynamical Casimir effect

    We study the entanglement dynamics between two cavities when one of them is harmonically shaken in the context of quantum information theory. We find four different regimes depending on the frequency of the motion and the spectrum of the moving cavity. If the moving cavity is three dimensional only two modes inside get coupled and the entanglement can either degrade asymptotically with time or oscillate depending on the driving. On the other hand, if the cavity has an equidistant spectrum the entanglement can either vanish asymptotically if it is driven with its fundamental frequency or have a sudden death if it is driven with an uneven harmonic frequency.Fil: del Grosso, Nicolas Francisco. El objetivo general de este estudio es describir, estudiar y comparar el espacio otorgado por la universidad a esta problemática en sus diferentes territorios, las estrategias de comunicación adoptadas y presentar el uso de la comunicación como facilitador de la renovación del lazo social.; This study examines communication and information regarding mental health within the university in four public universities in four countries and compares perceptions about the prevalence and importance of mental health problems and the visibility of university health services.     User Interface Device with Actuated Buttons

    A user interface device with actuated buttons is described. In an embodiment, the user interface device comprises two or more buttons and the motion of the buttons is controlled by actuators under software control such that their motion is inter-related. The position or motion of the buttons may provide a user with feedback about the current state of a software program they are using or provide them with enhanced user input functionality. In another embodiment, the ability to move the buttons is used to reconfigure the user interface buttons and this may be performed dynamically, based on the current state of the software program, or may be performed dependent upon the software program being used. The user interface device may be a peripheral device, such as a mouse or keyboard, or may be integrated within a computing device such as a games device

    Quantum Otto cycle in a superconducting cavity in the nonadiabatic regime

    We analyze the efficiency of the quantum Otto cycle applied to a superconducting cavity. We consider its description in terms of a full quantum scalar field in a one-dimensional cavity with a time-dependent boundary condition that can be externally controlled to perform and extract work unitarily from the system. We study the performance of this machine when acting as a heat engine as well as a refrigerator. It is shown that, in a nonadiabatic regime, the efficiency of the quantum cycle is affected by the dynamical Casimir effect that induces a sort of quantum friction that diminishes the efficiency. We also find regions of parameters where the effect is so strong that the machine can no longer function as an engine since the work that would be produced is completely consumed by the quantum friction. However, this effect can be avoided for some particular temporal evolutions of the boundary conditions that do not change the occupation number of the modes in the cavity, leading to a highly improved efficiency.Fil: del Grosso, Nicolas Francisco.     The Different Facets of Heart Rate Variability in Obstructive Sleep Apnea

    Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a heterogeneous and multifactorial sleep related breathing disorder with high prevalence, is a recognized risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Autonomic dysfunction leads to adverse cardiovascular outcomes in diverse pathways. Heart rate is a complex physiological process involving neurovisceral networks and relative regulatory mechanisms such as thermoregulation, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone mechanisms, and metabolic mechanisms. Heart rate variability (HRV) is considered as a reliable and non-invasive measure of autonomic modulation response and adaptation to endogenous and exogenous stimuli. HRV measures may add a new dimension to help understand the interplay between cardiac and nervous system involvement in OSA. The aim of this review is to introduce the various applications of HRV in different aspects of OSA to examine the impaired neuro-cardiac modulation. More specifically, the topics covered include: HRV time windows, sleep staging, arousal, sleepiness, hypoxia, mental illness, and mortality and morbidity. All of these aspects show pathways in the clinical implementation of HRV to screen, diagnose, classify, and predict patients as a reasonable and more convenient alternative to current measures.Peer Reviewe
