Conservation Policies and Labor Markets: Unraveling the Effects of National Parks on Local Wages in Costa Rica
Despite the global environmental benefits of increasing the amount of protected areas, how these conservation policies affect the well-being of nearby individuals is still under debate. Using household surveys with highly disaggregated geographic references, we explored how national parks affect local wages in Costa Rica and how these effects vary within different areas of a park and among different social groups. We found that a park’s effects on wages vary according to economic activity and proximity to the entrance of the park. Wages close to parks are higher only for people living near tourist entrances. Workers close to entrances are not only employed in higher-paid activities (nonagricultural activities) but also receive higher wages for these activities. Agricultural workers, however, are never better off close to parks (neither close to or far from the entrances). Also, workers close to parks but far away from tourist entrances earn similar or lower wages than comparable workers far away from parks. Our results are robust to different econometric approaches (OLS and matching techniques). The location of national park entrances and the possibility that agricultural workers can switch to higher-paid service activities near tourist entrances may be important tools for helping local workers take advantage of the economic benefits of protected areas.wages, national parks, matching, labor markets, conservation policies, parks, poverty
actual

Factors Affecting Commitment for Military Couples
The reintegration process for combat veterans is challenging not only for soldiers but also for their spouses and family members. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine factors affecting relationship commitment in military couples in which a service member has shown signs of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Sternberg’s triangular theory of love provided the framework for the study. Independent variables were passion, intimacy, age, and social support, and the dependent variable was commitment. Survey data were collected from 116 participants using Sternberg’s Triangular Love Scale and the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale. The results of multiple linear regression analysis showed that there was no significant effect of all factors combined; however, intimacy and passion were found to have a significant effect individually. Findings may increase awareness among mental health practitioners and shift the focus from the combat veteran to the partner or the couple as a unit when combating PTSD
Proyecto de Graduación (Licenciatura en Ingeniería Ambiental) Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, Escuela de Química, 2018Watersheds in Costa Rica show a deterioration in their water quality, associated to the lack of an urban development planning to define the uses for each area. This planning absence leads to inadequate uses in areas of high ecological fragility. The use of a water quality predictive model based on socio-environmental variables allowed the evaluation of different scenarios and the impact of socio-environmental changes on water quality in the future, in the sub-basin of the Rincón River, an area selected as a sample within the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve. The model used was developed by researchers at the ITCR and evaluates the quality of water by analyzing socio-environmental variables, such as population density and land use. According to the evaluation of scenarios, the increase of the uses for pastures or fallow land does not harm the quality of the water if kept below 25% of the total area. It was found that the increase in permanent plantings area and the loss of forest does affect the quality of the water negatively. It was also found that the decision criterion of greater weight for environmental management, oriented to preserve water quality as class 2, obeys to maintain the forest cover and to incentive economic activities that can coexist with the standing forest. In addition, it was determined that, through the development of relevant activities, a decent standard of living can be maintained for the residents of the RFGD, and at the same time preserve the water quality of their rivers, as an investment for their present and future. It was possible to establish criteria for environmental management focused on conserving the quality of surface water in the sub-basin of the Rincón River, to be replicated within the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve in the Osa Peninsula
variedad Wonderful, mango (Mangifera indica) variedades Tommy Atkins y Keitt,
manzana (Malus pumila) variedades Fuji y Granny Smith, melocotón (Pyrus persicae)
variedad Traa Zee, naranja (Citrus sinensis) variedad Navel y pera (Pyrus communis)
variedad Bartlett.
152 páginasLa Educación Holística se caracteriza por ser una pedagogía humanista centrada en el estudiante;
"Holistic Education is characterized as a humanistic pedagogy focused on the student; in their
formation, development as a person, in their relationship with themselves and with others in
society, so this model allows them to learn through experience since the practice is connected to
learning. Based on this conceptualization, we approached our research process with the objective
of identifying the possible effects that can be generated in the students with pedagogical
assessment of the HaPe School, "Thinking Skills", for this it was necessary to design different
techniques for the collection of information, such as observation, exploration of academic
performance, surveys to teachers and students with characterization, and we established a
population and sample. This project is based on a solid theoretical framework for each of the
variables that comprise it: Holistic Education with Finland's reference, Inclusive Education in the
teaching-learning process, social-emotional education and the institutional framework of HaPe
School. With the characteristics of an empirical-analytical research, with descriptive approach,
which led us to identify the positive effects that Holistic Education exerts on students with
pedagogical assessment at HaPe School, both academically and socio emotionally. Among the
conclusions we highlight how in the academic part, education with holistic methods has favored
the learning process of students, which shows a significant improvement in the results since there
is a greater motivation to learn. And in the socioemotional area, they are people with greater
autonomy and have great communicative and interpersonal skills, with good critical thinking,
which allows them to express their ideas. We close this research with contributions and
recommendations that seek to broaden and deepen this captivating topic.Licenciatura en Educación InfantilLicenciado en Educación Infanti
