Political crossroads ahead in Sweden: The signs are red-green. EPIN Commentary No. 20, 31 July 2014
The political balance in Sweden was upset in this year’s elections to the European Parliament (EP). The far-right ‘Sweden Democrats’ almost tripled their vote-share and the Greens gained enough votes to become the second-largest Swedish party in the EP after the Social Democrats. Support for the current government incumbents, the Moderates, fell beyond expectation. The party will not recover in time for the national elections in September, whereas both the Greens and the Sweden Democrats are likely to repeat their EP election success. Since the Sweden Democrats are unlikely to form part of the coalition government – the election-winners will be the Greens and Social Democrats – Sweden’s political landscape is set to undergo a shift to the left

Advances in EU Gender Equality: Missing the mark? EPIN [Working] Paper No. 41/September 2014
Gender balance has been a particularly salient issue in the recent process of formulating the list of designated commissioners. Jean-Claude Juncker’s success, as President-elect of the European Commission, in securing the designation of nine women as commissioners should be seen in perspective. Female representation in top EU positions remains low. This paper analyses the EP committees, finding a clear divergence in legislative influence between committees chaired by men and women. Although female political representation has been increasing, this is happening at a very slow pace and the most influential leadership roles in the EP remain dominated by men. This raises questions of the possible need to resort to stronger measures to improve female representation in the EU institutions

The present study investigates the appearance of Thematic Progression and Lexicogrammatical Features in English song lyrics written by English and Indonesian songwriters by applying theories of Systemic Functional Grammar by using Hallidays Lexicogrammatical Features and Danes’ Thematic Progression framework. This study discovers that the thematic Progression patterns and Lexicogrammatical features found in the data are similar. This study revealed that in English song lyrics written by both Indonesian and English songwriters, the appearance of the most frequent Thematic Progression patterns and lexicogrammatical Features are similar. The data showed that Multiple Theme Progression appears as the most frequent Thematic Progression pattern. The data also showed the use of Personal Pronoun appears as the most frequent Lexicogrammatical feature. These findings suggested that the texts are coherent and, by the dominant use of personal pronoun ‘I’ and ‘you’, the songwriters tend to speak directly to their listeners so it could be easily understood by the readers/listeners.

Balancing Priorities and Emergency Measures: Luxembourg’s Council Presidency. EPIN Commentary No. 30/15 January 2016
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg held the reins of the EU Council presidency between 1 July
and 31 December 2015. This was the 12th time that the second-smallest and the richest EU
member state1
held the rotating Council presidency. As one of the founding members of the
EU, Luxembourg has sound experience to bring to this role. It was, however, their first presidency
since the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty and its introduction of the trio presidency format, this
time including Italy and Latvia. Under the slogan ‘A Union for the Citizens’, Luxembourg had the
task of concluding certain major dossiers before the end of the trio’s term and was able to contribute to
its overarching agenda, especially regarding the priorities of financial stability, growth stimulation and
the digital agenda
Labour Market Integration of Refugees: A comparative survey of Bosnians in five EU countries. CEPS Special Report No. 155, December 2016
This study traces the integration experience of Bosnian refugees from the Balkan wars with the aim of drawing lessons for the current wave of refugees entering Europe. Integration is a slow-moving process. Looking closely at Bosnian refugees enables us to see past immediate integration outcomes and take a longer-term view. Another consideration in the design of this study is that there is significant overlap among the countries affected by the two refugee crises. Austria, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden all saw a large absolute and relative influx of refugees in both 2015 and in the years between 1992 and 1995, when the largest share of Bosnians arrived in Western Europe. The study carries out an in-depth examination of their labour market integration in those five countries

Bald on record strategy is used by Harry in the situation of urgency. In positive politeness, Harry uses it to people around him in order to satisfying their positive face. Negative politeness also used by Harry as he wants to satisfy the hearer‟s negative face. While off record strategy used by Harry because he wants to be indirect and gives the hearer clues. Harry used those strategies to his friends, teachers and character around him. The integration of Bosnian refugees: an encouraging story that provides lessons for the current migration crisis
The migration crisis has posed a number of challenges for European countries, but what lessons can be learned from previous experiences with large scale migration? Mikkel Barslund, Matthias Busse, Karolien Lenaerts, Lars Ludolph and Vilde Renman present evidence from a study of the integration of Bosnian refugees in Europe following the Balkan wars in the 1990s.
