Enabling collaboration in virtual reality navigators
In this paper we characterize a feature superset for Collaborative
Virtual Reality Environments (CVRE), and derive a component
framework to transform stand-alone VR navigators into full-fledged
multithreaded collaborative environments. The contributions of our
approach rely on a cost-effective and extensible technique for
loading software components into separate POSIX threads for
rendering, user interaction and network communications, and adding a
top layer for managing session collaboration. The framework recasts
a VR navigator under a distributed peer-to-peer topology for scene
and object sharing, using callback hooks for broadcasting remote
events and multicamera perspective sharing with avatar interaction.
We validate the framework by applying it to our own ALICE VR
Navigator. Experimental results show that our approach has good
performance in the collaborative inspection of complex models.Postprint (published version
Variability of nursing care by APR-DRG and by severity of illness in a sample of nine Belgian hospitals
Background: As soon as Diagnosis-related groups (DRG) were introduced in many
hospital financing systems, most nursing researchers claimed that the DRG
approach was not very homogeneous regarding nursing care. However, only few
studies are based on All Patient Refined DRGs (APR-DRG) and only a few of them
use recent data. The objectives of the study are: (1) Assess whether nursing care is
homogeneous according to APR-DRG and the severity of the condition; (2) Assess
the outliers ratio associated to nursing care; (3) Compare the homogeneity of
nursing costs according to GRD and the severity of the condition.
Method: The study took place in 9 Belgian hospitals in APR-DRG sections with over
30 patients (7,638 hospital stays). The assessment of homogeneity is based on the
coefficients of variation (CV). The percentile 75 + 1.5 × interquartile range was
used in order to select the high outliers. The percentile 25 – 1.5 × interquartile
range was used in order to select the low outliers. The nursing costs per hospital
unit were distributed among the hospital stays of each unit following two
techniques (average stay vs number of minutes of nursing care per stay).
Results: The homogeneity of the average stay per DRG and per severity is
relatively good (CV=0.56). The homogeneity of nursing care per DRG is worse (CV
between 0.36 and 1.54) and is influenced by the nursing care outliers (high outlier
ratio=5.19%; low outlier ratio=0.14%). The outlier ratio varies according to the
variable subject of study. The high outlier ratio is bigger for nursing care than it is
for average stay. The homogeneity of nursing costs is bigger when costs are based
on average stays of patients than when they are based on the number of minutes of
nursing care (CV between 0.26 and 1.46 for nursing costs based on average stay,
and between 0.49 and 2.04 for nursing costs based on the minutes of nursing care).
Conclusion: It is essential that the calculation of nursing costs per stay and per DRG
regarding hospital financing is based on data from nursing activity and not from
average stay, since the former reflects the resources used in hospital units more
accurately. The only way to obtain this information is the generalisation of
computerised nursing records

Applying bottom-up listening strategies to eighth grade in a public high school
Bottom-up listening strategies. The current study is based on listening comprehension techniques applying bottomup
listening strategies. In this study our first observations were addressed to eighth graders
of a high school in Pereira where we found that the amount of listening practice was not
sufficient to develop the learners’ listening skill. After observing this fact, we decided to
implement bottom-up listening strategies to provide the learners with opportunities to
receive listening input. Consequently, we formulated two questions that aimed to find
answers to what learners’ perceptions were, and what the impact on learners’ listening skill
was when applying bottom-up listening strategies. To answer these questions we applied
qualitative research. The instruments that we used to collect data were field notes, video
recordings, and questionnaires. The collected data was analyzed in order to obtain findings
that gave answers to our research questions. Those findings were discussed based on what
experts have written about the field to support and enlighten the results of our stud
New Paradigms for Exploiting Parallel Experiments in Bayesian Optimization
Bayesian optimization (BO) is one of the most effective methods for
closed-loop experimental design and black-box optimization. However, a key
limitation of BO is that it is an inherently sequential algorithm (one
experiment is proposed per round) and thus cannot directly exploit
high-throughput (parallel) experiments. Diverse modifications to the BO
framework have been proposed in the literature to enable exploitation of
parallel experiments but such approaches are limited in the degree of
parallelization that they can achieve and can lead to redundant experiments
(thus wasting resources and potentially compromising performance). In this
work, we present new parallel BO paradigms that exploit the structure of the
system to partition the design space. Specifically, we propose an approach that
partitions the design space by following the level sets of the performance
function and an approach that exploits partially-separable structures of the
performance function found. We conduct extensive numerical experiments using a
reactor case study to benchmark the effectiveness of these approaches against a
variety of state-of-the-art parallel algorithms reported in the literature. Our
computational results show that our approaches significantly reduce the
required search time and increase the probability of finding a global (rather
than local) solution.Comment: 32 pages, 16 figures, 7 algorithm
BOIS: Bayesian Optimization of Interconnected Systems
Bayesian optimization (BO) has proven to be an effective paradigm for the
global optimization of expensive-to-sample systems. One of the main advantages
of BO is its use of Gaussian processes (GPs) to characterize model uncertainty
which can be leveraged to guide the learning and search process. However, BO
typically treats systems as black-boxes and this limits the ability to exploit
structural knowledge (e.g., physics and sparse interconnections). Composite
functions of the form , wherein GP modeling is shifted from the
performance function to an intermediate function , offer an avenue for
exploiting structural knowledge. However, the use of composite functions in a
BO framework is complicated by the need to generate a probability density for
from the Gaussian density of calculated by the GP (e.g., when is
nonlinear it is not possible to obtain a closed-form expression). Previous work
has handled this issue using sampling techniques; these are easy to implement
and flexible but are computationally intensive. In this work, we introduce a
new paradigm which allows for the efficient use of composite functions in BO;
this uses adaptive linearizations of to obtain closed-form expressions for
the statistical moments of the composite function. We show that this simple
approach (which we call BOIS) enables the exploitation of structural knowledge,
such as that arising in interconnected systems as well as systems that embed
multiple GP models and combinations of physics and GP models. Using a chemical
process optimization case study, we benchmark the effectiveness of BOIS against
standard BO and sampling approaches. Our results indicate that BOIS achieves
performance gains and accurately captures the statistics of composite
functions.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Using Biotic Interaction Networks for Prediction in Biodiversity and Emerging Diseases
Networks offer a powerful tool for understanding and visualizing inter-species interactions within an ecology. Previously considered examples, such as trophic networks, are just representations of experimentally observed direct interactions. However, species interactions are so rich and complex it is not feasible to directly observe more than a small fraction. In this paper, using data mining techniques, we show how potential interactions can be inferred from geographic data, rather than by direct observation. An important application area for such a methodology is that of emerging diseases, where, often, little is known about inter-species interactions, such as between vectors and reservoirs. Here, we show how using geographic data, biotic interaction networks that model statistical dependencies between species distributions can be used to infer and understand inter-species interactions. Furthermore, we show how such networks can be used to build prediction models. For example, for predicting the most important reservoirs of a disease, or the degree of disease risk associated with a geographical area. We illustrate the general methodology by considering an important emerging disease - Leishmaniasis. This data mining approach allows for the use of geographic data to construct inferential biotic interaction networks which can then be used to build prediction models with a wide range of applications in ecology, biodiversity and emerging diseases
