Evaluación y puesta en valor de una nave de taller ferroviario afectada por incendio

En este trabajo se presenta la evaluación de una nave afectada por un incendio, destinada en su origen a talleres ferroviarios y en la actualidad utilizada como archivo por la Universidad Nacional de Lanús. El edificio en estudio posee un sector en el que la estructura metálica de la cubierta ha colapsado por efecto de las altas temperaturas y sectores contiguos parcialmente deteriorados. Para definir el alcance del daño producido por las altas temperaturas se evaluaron muestras de acero que forman parte de la estructura resistente de la cubierta, se determinaron propiedades mecánicas y se realizaron observaciones microestructurales. También se procedió al relevamiento de daños en muros perimetrales y divisorios en los que se observaron deficiencias asociadas con el siniestro. El análisis de los resultados, las tareas de relevamiento y las verificaciones estructurales permitieron proponer una estrategia de reparación teniendo en cuenta que se trata de un edificio que pertenece al patrimonio arquitectónico

Valoração de atributos de qualidade em pêssegos comercializados no estado de São Paulo

Econometric models were developed to estimate the implicit prices for selected quality attributes of fresh peaches commercialized in the state of Sao Paulo. Such estimation is conducted in two stages of the distribution chain, namely, wholesale and retail sales. Data on the price and quality attributes (such as color, size, varieties and types of damages) of fresh peaches were obtained from cross-sectional data in different time periods. The estimation of Hedonic Prices is proposed as a method to evaluate post-harvest price variations from wholesale to retail sales. Viabilidade econômica de embalagens para laranja-de-mesa no estado de São Paulo

This current study aims to identify the most feasible type of packages for fresh oranges, produced and commercialized in the São Paulo state. In order to do so, three studies of specific cases were considered, under the context of multi cases. It was aimed to determine the cost of processing, packaging and transporting related to the orange commercialization aimed at customers such as wholesalers, supermarkets and Supplying Centers (CEASA’s), from a Packing-House. The results presented and analyzed in this study allowed to indicate that, in general terms, there is no package more feasible economically speaking, considering its use. What was really observed was that there is a package that is more feasible for each producer considering his specific characteristics, such as: forms of freight negotiations with the customer, the payment of taxes related to transportation, loss levels related to the use of determined packages in long distances, variations of the fruit prices sold to the customer and to the industry, values related to the processing, arbitrage and taxes of financial discounts (according to the type of supermarket). Based on the spreadsheet the producer will be able to use a tool to help make decisions related not only to the most feasible package to be used, but also as an instrument in defining the best sale price for their fruit (R$/kg), from which profits can be forecasted in all levels of refusals.Packaging, Economic feasibility, Orange, Marketing,

Retinoblastoma: A Three-Year-Study at a Brazilian Medical School Hospital

OBJECTIVE: To present the characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients with retinoblastoma. METHODS: A retrospective case series was conducted to review the records of all new patients diagnosed with retinoblastoma between 2003 and 2005. Eyes with early disease, or advanced disease with potential vision were treated with chemotherapy (carboplatin and etoposide) in conjunction with early local therapy (laser or cryo). Radiotherapy was used in cases where the disease did not respond to the above protocols or in recurrent cases. Eyes in the late stage of disease with no potential vision in the initial examination or eyes and where conservative treatment had failed were enucleated. RESULTS: In total, we reviewed 28 new cases of retinoblastoma, 15 of which were unilateral and 13 of which were bilateral (46%). These data correspond to a mean of 9.3 new cases per year (0.77 case/ month). The mean age at diagnosis was 33.8 months for unilateral cases, and 19.15 months for bilateral cases (p=0.015). Leucocoria was the major presenting symptom (75%). All but one patient with unilateral disease had the affected eye enucleated due to advanced disease (mean follow-up: 39.91 months). Among the 13 bilateral cases, 13 eyes (50%) were enucleated, 11 eyes (42.4%) were saved with chemotherapy in conjunction with local therapy and 2 eyes (7.6%) were saved using external beam radiotherapy (mean follow-up: 41.91 months). In unilateral and bilateral disease, pathology data revealed choroid involvement in 50% and 30%, respectively, and optic nerve invasion in 92% and 50%, respectively. CONCLUSION: In this population, retinoblastoma was diagnosed too late and most eyes were consequently enucleated. In cases with bilateral disease, half of the eyes were preserved

New concepts and outcomes for children with hepatoblastoma based on the experience of a tertiary center over the last 21 years

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to summarize the experience of a tertiary center in treating hepatoblastoma for the last 21 years. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-eight cases were included. The tumor extent and prognosis were assessed using the PRETEXT system. The following data were analyzed: age at diagnosis, comorbidities, prematurity, treatment modalities, histopathological findings, surgical details and complications, treatment outcomes, chemotherapy schedules, side effects and complications. Treatment outcomes included the occurrence of local or distant recurrence, the duration of survival and the cause of death. The investigation methods were ultrasonography, CT scan, serum alpha-fetoprotein level measurement and needle biopsy. Chemotherapy was then planned, and the resectability of the tumor was reevaluated via another CT scan. RESULTS: The mean numbers of neoadjuvant cycles and postoperative cycles of chemotherapy were 6±2 and 1.5±1.7, respectively. All children except one were submitted for surgical resection, including 50 partial liver resections and 7 liver transplantations. Statistical comparisons demonstrated that long-term survival was associated with the absence of metastasis (p=0.04) and the type of surgery (resection resulted in a better outcome than transplantation) (p=0.009). No associations were found between vascular invasion, incomplete resection, histological subtype, multicentricity and survival. The overall 5-year survival rate of the operated cases was 87.7%. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the experience of a Brazilian tertiary center in the management of hepatoblastoma in children demonstrates that long survival is associated with the absence of metastasis and the type of surgery. A multidisciplinary treatment involving chemotherapy, surgical resection and liver transplantation (including transplantations using tissue from living donors) led to good outcomes and survival indexes

Differential effects of ethanol ingestion on somatostatin content,somatostatin receptors and adenylyl cyclase activity in thefrontoparietal cortex of virgin and parturient rats

Chronic ethanol ingestion decreases the number of somatostatin (SRIF) receptors in the rat frontoparietal cortex and female sex hormones modulate the effects of ethanol in the brain. Therefore, we investigated the differential effects of ethanol consumption on the SRIFergic system in the frontoparietal cortex of virgin and parturient rats given ethanol in their drinking water before and during gestation. In parturient rats, ethanol consumption decreased the density of SRIF receptors (25%, p < 0.01 vs control parturient group) whereas the SRIF-like immunoreactivity (SRIF-LI) content was increased (140%, p < 0.01). In virgin rats, ethanol ingestion decreased the density of SRIF receptors (42%, p < 0.01) more than in alcoholic parturient rats. SRIF-LI levels were unaffected. The inhibitory effect of SRIF on basal and forskolin-stimulated adenylyl cyclase was significantly lower in alcoholic virgin rats as compared to alcoholic parturient rats. No differences in the levels of the G inhibitory (Gi) ¿1 and Gi¿2 proteins were observed among the experimental groups. These results suggest that gestation may confer partial resistance to the ethanol-induced effect on the SRIFergic system
