ACQUISITION DE DONNEES ET SURVEILLANCE EN LIGNE DU DETECTEUR D'ONDES GRAVITATIONNELLES VIRGO
This document presents mainly my works in the Virgo experiment that search for gravitational waves.Nevertheless, I recall in a short introduction my activities in the NOMAD experiment and I outline,in a first chapter, the status of the detection of neutrinos. Then, I describe at chapter 2the status of the gravitational waves interferometric detection. The third chapter, describing the Virgo experiment, is followed by three chapters describing the domainswhere I have contributed mostly to the experiment: the data acquisition system, the online detector monitoring and the search for glitches in the data. Finally,a last chapter, more general, makes an overview of my outreach activities tothe citizens and to the scholars.Virgo is a 3 km long interferometer aiming at the detection of gravitational wavesfrom astrophysical sources. Those waves are space-time deformations, consequence ofthe General Relativity theory. Arriving on Earth, they make tiny modifications of distancesthat can be theoretically detectable by interferometry.I have contributed to the construction and commissioning of the Virgo interferometer, since 1997, by participating to the conception, realization and improvements of thedata acquisition system. I have more particularly created the data collector and I haveheavily contributed to the development of the library that manages the data transferunder frame format in the data acquisition chain. This library has provided a greatflexibility of the data acquisition and online processing architectures, all alongthe detector's commissioning The data acquisition currently sustains a data rate ofabout 20 MBytes/s (8 MBytes/s after data compression) with a mean latency of 2 secondsand a data loss below 0.3%.I have also created a software, the dataDisplay that allows to read the data onlineor offline, to visualize various types of plots (time plots, spectra, coherence, transfer function, distributions 1D or 2D, spectrograms, etc...) and to listen to the data. This software uses a graphical interface based on Xforms and a visualisation based onthe Root library developed at CERN. The dataDisplay is now used as a standard toolby the Virgo collaboration, from control roomfor online detector monitoring or offline for the analysis of the recorded data.In addition, I strongly participate to the data qualification, in particular by providingthe software tools that allow to configure easily the algorithms that monitor online thedetector and its environment. Moreover, I contribute to the search for glitches in theinterferometer's signals and I have the responsibility to put online the algorithms thatstudy the detector's noise. This work is motivated by the fact that the understanding ofthe interferometer is mandatory before any gravitational waves search. Finally, since several years, I interested in outreach activities and, from 2002 to 2007,I have been in charge of communication at LAPP. In this scope, I made contacts with schools, associations and municipalities in order to promote the curiosity for sciences and thescientific method. By several means (conferences at secondary schools, visits organizedat LAPP and based on a permanent exposition, public conferences, participations tolaboratory Open Doors, creation of web pages), I have tried to excite the interest of youngpublic to sciences, to make understand what is scientific research and to show what are itslinks with the everyday life.
The Archaeological service of the Department of Aisne has carried out two preventive archaeological operations in the Chemin des Dames sector on the remains of the First World War. The extension of the Caverne du Dragon Parking on the plateau of the Chemin des Dames gave rise to a search conducted in 2015 (2,200 m²) which allowed to highlight German developments with a defensive purpose or intended for the observation of the French lines located below. The existence of an underground quarry (now known as the ”Dragon” and today a museum), which is heavily occupied by belligerents and connected to the surface by trenches, reinforces the site’s interest. In addition, as part of the sand exploitation in the Aisne Valley, a search was carried out in 2017 on the commune of Presles-et Boves. The studied surface (11 000 m²), sited at the bottom of the Chemin des Dames, has allowed to discover a French settlement made of different half buried shelters (billets for soldiers, storage, toilets..), connected together by a trench system. Located in the same landscaping context – the limestone Plateau of the Chemin des Dames, cut by the valleys of the Ailette to the north and the Aisne to the south – these two operations synthesize the military challenges of the conflict in this area. For the Germans, the idea is to hold the plateau (until the attack of April 16, which allows the French to win back a large part of it) by relying on the existing network underground galleries while improving it with additional access and reinforced concrete shelters built on the surface. Lower down, while living conditions appear to be less good (shallow water table, position of observed besiegers, etc.), the French are equipping themselves with tidy equipment, guaranteeing decent living conditions, and now exhibiting a good state of conservation thanks to a permanent forest cover since 1918. In order to understand and pass on the knowledge gained, the results of the archeological excavations are then integrated into a GIS that synthesizes various data. This cartographic tool thus provides the Aisne Department with a support for understanding the war landscape
The variable finesse locking technique
Virgo is a power recycled Michelson interferometer, with 3 km long Fabry-Perot cavities in the arms. The locking of the interferometer has been obtained with an original lock acquisition technique. The main idea is to lock the instrument away from its working point. Lock is obtained by misaligning the power recycling mirror and detuning the Michelson from the dark fringe. In this way, a good fraction of light escapes through the antisymmetric port and the power build-up inside the recycling cavity is extremely low. The benefit is that all the degrees of freedom are controlled when they are almost decoupled, and the linewidth of the recycling cavity is large. The interferometer is then adiabatically brought on to the dark fringe. This technique is referred to as variable finesse, since the recycling cavity is considered as a variable finesse Fabry-Perot. This technique has been widely tested and allows us to reach the dark fringe in few minutes, in an essentially deterministic way
Virgo calibration and reconstruction of the gravitational wave strain during VSR1
Virgo is a kilometer-length interferometer for gravitational waves detection
located near Pisa. Its first science run, VSR1, occured from May to October
2007. The aims of the calibration are to measure the detector sensitivity and
to reconstruct the time series of the gravitational wave strain h(t). The
absolute length calibration is based on an original non-linear reconstruction
of the differential arm length variations in free swinging Michelson
configurations. It uses the laser wavelength as length standard. This method is
used to calibrate the frequency dependent response of the Virgo mirror
actuators and derive the detector in-loop response and sensitivity within ~5%.
The principle of the strain reconstruction is highlighted and the h(t)
systematic errors are estimated. A photon calibrator is used to check the sign
of h(t). The reconstructed h(t) during VSR1 is valid from 10 Hz up to 10 kHz
with systematic errors estimated to 6% in amplitude. The phase error is
estimated to be 70 mrad below 1.9 kHz and 6 micro-seconds above.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, proceedings of Amaldi 8 conference, to be

A Cross-correlation method to search for gravitational wave bursts with AURIGA and Virgo
We present a method to search for transient GWs using a network of detectors
with different spectral and directional sensitivities: the interferometer Virgo
and the bar detector AURIGA. The data analysis method is based on the
measurements of the correlated energy in the network by means of a weighted
cross-correlation. To limit the computational load, this coherent analysis step
is performed around time-frequency coincident triggers selected by an excess
power event trigger generator tuned at low thresholds. The final selection of
GW candidates is performed by a combined cut on the correlated energy and on
the significance as measured by the event trigger generator. The method has
been tested on one day of data of AURIGA and Virgo during September 2005. The
outcomes are compared to the results of a stand-alone time-frequency
coincidence search. We discuss the advantages and the limits of this approach,
in view of a possible future joint search between AURIGA and one
interferometric detector.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to CQG special issue for Amaldi 7

Reconstruction of the gravitational wave signal during the Virgo science runs and independent validation with a photon calibrator
The Virgo detector is a kilometer-scale interferometer for gravitational wave
detection located near Pisa (Italy). About 13 months of data were accumulated
during four science runs (VSR1, VSR2, VSR3 and VSR4) between May 2007 and
September 2011, with increasing sensitivity.
In this paper, the method used to reconstruct, in the range 10 Hz-10 kHz, the
gravitational wave strain time series from the detector signals is
described. The standard consistency checks of the reconstruction are discussed
and used to estimate the systematic uncertainties of the signal as a
function of frequency. Finally, an independent setup, the photon calibrator, is
described and used to validate the reconstructed signal and the
associated uncertainties.
The uncertainties of the time series are estimated to be 8% in
amplitude. The uncertainty of the phase of is 50 mrad at 10 Hz with a
frequency dependence following a delay of 8 s at high frequency. A bias
lower than and depending on the sky direction of the GW is
also present.Comment: 35 pages, 16 figures. Accepted by CQ
