The impossible quest: increasing students’ participation and Interaction in the L2 in secondary education’s EFL classrooms
(English) he main purpose of this Dissertation is to propose an innovation project which aims at increasing students’ participation and interaction in the L2 in Secondary Education’s EFL classrooms. In order to do that, a didactic unit has been designed, which includes a combination of methods and approaches which are recommended in the LOMCE Aragonese Curriculum and others which have proven to be the most effective in the teaching of English as a Foreign Language, such as Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) or active methodologies, like the Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) and Cooperative Learning, as well as Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) and the PPP lesson format taught through an inductive approach, and a process-oriented instruction of the written production skill. Other factors have also been taken into account, such as the interaction patterns, the type of feedback provided and the techniques incorporated for differentiation. This learning unit’s effectiveness has been critically analysed and discussed in this paper, applying the theoretical and curricular framework previously presented to justify all the decisions taken during its creation. As a conclusion, this didactic proposal seems to have a good chance to work out within an EFL classroom, although it should always be considered that not all classes work in the same way and that we still need to adapt to individual learners’ needs and characteristics. (Español) El principal propósito de esta disertación es proponer un proyecto de innovación que aspira a incrementar la participación e interacción en la segunda lengua del alumnado en las aulas de inglés como Lengua Extranjera de Educación Secundaria. Para ello, ha sido diseñada una unidad didáctica que combina métodos y enfoques que aparecen recomendados en el Currículo LOMCE Aragonés y otros que han demostrado ser los más efectivos en la enseñanza del inglés como lengua extranjera, como el enfoque comunicativo o las metodologías activas, tanto el Aprendizaje Basado en Proyectos (ABP) como el Aprendizaje Cooperativo, además del Aprendizaje Basado en Tareas, las lecciones que siguen el formato Presentación-Práctica-Producción a través de un enfoque inductivo y una enseñanza de la producción escrita orientada al proceso. También se han tenido en cuenta otros factores, como los patrones de interacción, el tipo de retroalimentación y las técnicas de atención a la diversidad incorporadas. La efectividad de esta unidad didáctica ha sido analizada y comentada críticamente en este trabajo, aplicando el marco teórico y curricular anteriormente presentado con el objetivo de justificar las decisiones tomadas durante su creación. Como conclusión, esta propuesta didáctica parece propicia a funcionar en una clase de inglés, aunque siempre se debe considerar que no todas las clases trabajan de la misma forma y que aún debemos adaptarnos a las características y necesidades individuales del alumnado.<br /
Retroceso del glaciar del Carihuairazo y sus implicaciones en la comunidad de Cunucyacu
El retroceso de los glaciares es una realidad en toda la cordillera de los Andes, sobre todo en montañas de baja altitud. Uno de estos casos es la pérdida de la masa de hielo remanente en el Carihuairazo (Tungurahua, Ecuador), que en los últimos años ha experimentado un retroceso considerable. En esta investigación se intenta caracterizar el retroceso de este glaciar y su implicación en la comunidad más cercana (Cunucyacu) por medio de la aplicación de una metodología de múltiples fuentes que incluye la recopilación de aerofotografías del glaciar, datos de estaciones meteorológicas cercanas, uso de datos de reanálisis del clima global, entrevistas a miembros de la comunidad y a andinistas que trabajan y frecuentan la zona. Para caracterizar la evolución de la masa del glaciar aplicamos un modelo hidroglaciológico que usa como entrada datos de series meteorológicas y cuyos parámetros fueron calibrados con el registro fotográfico del contorno del glaciar. Como resultados se puede evidenciar una pérdida del glaciar para el 2021 equivalente al 99% de su superficie en 1956 (0.34 ). El modelo logra simular la variación del área del glaciar durante 67 años, en donde se observa un decrecimiento continuo del glaciar a partir de 1978, con cortos periodos de recuperación y equilibrio, en donde la temperatura es la variable que mejor explica el retroceso del glaciar. El modelo no logra considerar el efecto de factores externos como el caso de la erupción del volcán Tungurahua que podría favorecer el retroceso del glaciar. El glaciar Carihuairazo se encuentra en una situación de inevitable desaparición y revela las vulnerabilidades de las comunidades que se enfrentan a este fenómeno como consecuencia del cambio climático.The retreat of glaciers is a reality throughout the Andes Mountain range, especially in low-altitude mountains. One of these cases is the loss of the remaining ice mass in Carihuairazo (Tungurahua, Ecuador), which in recent years has experienced a considerable retreat. This research aims to characterize the retreat of this glacier and its implications for the nearby community (Cunucyacu) through the application of a multi-source methodology, which includes the collection of glacier aerial photographs, data from nearby meteorological stations, the use of global climate reanalysis data, interviews with community members, and mountaineers who work and frequent the area. To characterize the glacier’s mass evolution, a hydroglaciological model was applied, using input data from meteorological series, and its parameters were calibrated with the photographic record of the glacier’s outline. The results show a glacier loss of 99% of its surface in 1956 (0.34 ) by 2021. The model successfully simulates the glacier area variation over 67 years, revealing a continuous decrease since 1978, with short periods of recovery and equilibrium, where temperature is the variable that best explains the glacier’s retreat. However, the model fails to consider the effect of external factors, such as the eruption of the Tungurahua volcano that could enhance the glacier retreat. The Carihuairazo glacier is in a situation of inevitable disappearance, highlighting the vulnerabilities of communities facing this phenomenon as a consequence of climate change
Association of gene-enviroment and age of pre-onset cannabis use with age at onset of psychosis in frist-episode patients
Trabajo presentado a la 10ª Reunión anual de la Sociedad Española de Investigación sobre Cannabinoides celebrada en Santander del 26 al 28 de noviembre de 2009.Es conocida la influencia negativa del uso de cannabis sobre el curso y pronóstico de la esquizofrenia. El cannabis es, además, la sustancia de abuso más utilizada en pacientes con esquizofrenia (15%-65%). Sin embargo sólo una pequeña proporción de consumidores de cannabis desarrollan psicosis. Varios estudios han demostrado que el uso de cannabis precede al debut de la psicosis en varios años (entre 4 y 5 ). El inicio precoz del consumo de cannabis en la adolescencia, puede por tanto, estar asociado a un debut precoz de la psicosis, con el consiguiente pronóstico negativo de la enfermedad. Varios polimorfismos de nucleótidoúnico (SNPs) del gen que codifica el receptor CB1 (CNR1; rs806379, rs1535255, rs2023239 y rs1049353) han sido asociados al consumo de drogas o alcohol (Zhang et al., Molecular Psychiatry, 9, 916–931. 2004, Schmidtetal., 2002 Drug and Alcohol Dependence, 65, 221–224) Variaciones en el gen de la triptófano hidroxilasa se han asociado con un mayor riesgo de psicosis (LiD, HeL: Hum Genet 2006). Finalmente, algunos de los SNPs en los receptores de la serotonina se han asociado con diversos trastornos psiquiátricos como la esquizofrenia o la depresión, sin embargo, los resultados de estos estudios de asociación genética han mostrado resultados conflictivos.Peer Reviewe

Obstacles to integrated pest management adoption in developing countries
Despite its theoretical prominence and sound principles, integrated pest management (IPM) continues to suffer from anemic adoption rates in developing countries. To shed light on the reasons, we surveyed the opinions of a large and diverse pool of IPM professionals and practitioners from 96 countries by using structured concept mapping.
The first phase of this method elicited 413 open-ended responses on perceived obstacles to IPM. Analysis of responses revealed 51 unique statements on obstacles, the most frequent of which was “insufficient training and technical support to farmers.” Cluster analyses, based on participant opinions, grouped these unique statements into six themes: research weaknesses, outreach weaknesses, IPM weaknesses, farmer weaknesses, pesticide industry interference, and weak adoption incentives. Subsequently, 163 participants rated the obstacles expressed in the 51 unique statements according to importance and remediation difficulty. Respondents from developing countries and high-income countries rated the obstacles differently. As a group, developing-country respondents rated “IPM requires collective action within a farming community” as their top obstacle to IPM adoption. Respondents from high-income countries prioritized instead the “shortage of well-qualified IPM experts and extensionists.” Differential prioritization was also evident among developing-country regions, and when obstacle statements were grouped into themes. Results highlighted the need to improve the participation of stakeholders from developing countries in the IPM adoption debate, and also to situate the debate within specific regional contexts
Identification of Androgen Receptor Metabolic Correlome Reveals the Repression of Ceramide Kinase by Androgens
Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most prevalent cancers in men. Androgen receptor signaling plays a major role in this disease, and androgen deprivation therapy is a common therapeutic strategy in recurrent disease. Sphingolipid metabolism plays a central role in cell death, survival, and therapy resistance in cancer. Ceramide kinase (CERK) catalyzes the phosphorylation of ceramide to ceramide 1-phosphate, which regulates various cellular functions including cell growth and migration. Here we show that activated androgen receptor (AR) is a repressor of CERK expression. We undertook a bioinformatics strategy using PCa transcriptomics datasets to ascertain the metabolic alterations associated with AR activity. CERK was among the most prominent negatively correlated genes in our analysis. Interestingly, we demonstrated through various experimental approaches that activated AR reduces the mRNA expression of CERK: (i) expression of CERK is predominant in cell lines with low or negative AR activity; (ii) AR agonist and antagonist repress and induce CERK mRNA expression, respectively; (iii) orchiectomy in wildtype mice or mice with PCa (harboring prostate-specific Pten deletion) results in elevated Cerk mRNA levels in prostate tissue. Mechanistically, we found that AR represses CERK through interaction with its regulatory elements and that the transcriptional repressor EZH2 contributes to this process. Fungal decomposition of river organic matter accelerated by decreasing glacier cover
Climate change is altering the structure and functioning of river ecosystems worldwide. In mountain rivers, glacier retreat has been shown to result in systematic changes in aquatic invertebrate biodiversity, but the effects of ice loss on other biological taxa and on whole-ecosystem functions are less well understood. Using data from mountain rivers spanning six countries on four continents, we show that decreasing glacier cover leads to consistent fungal-driven increases in the decomposition rate of cellulose, the world’s most abundant organic polymer. Cellulose decomposition rates were associated with greater abundance of aquatic fungi and the fungal cellulose-degrading Cellobiohydrolase I (cbhI) gene, illustrating the potential for predicting ecosystem-level functions from gene-level data. Clear associations between fungal genes, populations and communities and ecosystem functioning in mountain rivers indicate that ongoing global decreases in glacier cover can be expected to change vital ecosystem functions, including carbon cycle processes
Trastuzumab inhibits pituitary tumor cell growth modulating the TGFB/SMAD2/3 pathway
In pituitary adenomas, early recurrences and resistance to conventional pharmacotherapies are common, but the mechanisms involved are still not understood. The high expression of epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) signal observed in human pituitary adenomas, together with the low levels of the antimitogenic transforming growth factor beta receptor 2 (TBR2), encouraged us to evaluate the effect of the specific HER2 inhibition with trastuzumab on experimental pituitary tumor cell growth and its effect on the antiproliferative response to TGFB1. Trastuzumab decreased the pituitary tumor growth as well as the expression of ERK1/2 and the cell cycle regulators CCND1 and CDK4. The HER2/ERK1/2 pathway is an attractive therapeutic target, but its intricate relations with other signaling modulators still need to be unraveled. Thus, we investigated possible cross-talk with TGFB signaling, which has not yet been studied in pituitary tumors. In tumoral GH3 cells, co-incubation with trastuzumab and TGFB1 significantly decreased cell proliferation, an effect accompanied by a reduction in ERK1/2 phosphorylation, an increase of SMAD2/3 activation. In addition, through immunoprecipitation assays, a diminution of SMAD2/3-ERK1/2 and an increase SMAD2/3-TGFBR1 interactions were observed when cells were co-incubated with trastuzumab and TGFB1. These findings indicate that blocking HER2 by trastuzumab inhibited pituitary tumor growth and modulated HER2/ERK1/2 signaling and consequently the anti-mitogenic TGFB1/TBRs/SMADs cascade. The imbalance between HER2 and TGFBRs expression observed in human adenomas and the response to trastuzumab on experimental tumor growth may make the HER2/ERK1/2 pathway an attractive target for future pituitary adenoma therapy.Fil: Petiti, Juan Pablo. Use of tocilizumab in kidney transplant recipients with COVID-1
Acute respiratory distress syndrome associated with coronavirus infection is related to a cytokine storm with large interleukin-6 (IL-6) release. The IL-6-receptor blocker tocilizumab may control the aberrant host immune response in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) . In this pandemic, kidney transplant (KT) recipients are a high-risk population for severe infection and showed poor outcomes. We present a multicenter cohort study of 80 KT patients with severe COVID-19 treated with tocilizumab during hospital admission. High mortality rate was identified (32.5%), related with older age (hazard ratio [HR] 3.12 for those older than 60 years, P = .039). IL-6 and other inflammatory markers, including lactic acid dehydrogenase, ferritin, and D-dimer increased early after tocilizumab administration and their values were higher in nonsurvivors. Instead, C-reactive protein (CRP) levels decreased after tocilizumab, and this decrease positively correlated with survival (mean 12.3 mg/L in survivors vs. 33 mg/L in nonsurvivors). Each mg/L of CRP soon after tocilizumab increased the risk of death by 1% (HR 1.01 [confidence interval 1.004-1.024], P = .003). Although patients who died presented with worse respiratory situation at admission, this was not significantly different at tocilizumab administration and did not have an impact on outcome in the multivariate analysis. Tocilizumab may be effective in controlling cytokine storm in COVID-19 but randomized trials are needed
Anxious and depressive symptoms and health-related quality of life in a cohort of people who recently attempted suicide: A network analysis
Suicide is an international health concern with immeasurable impact from the perspective of human and social suffering. Prior suicide attempts, anxious and depressive symptoms, and relatively lower health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are among the most replicated risk factors for suicide. Global Patterns and Controls of Nutrient Immobilization On Decomposing Cellulose In Riverine Ecosystems
Microbes play a critical role in plant litter decomposition and influence the fate of carbon in rivers and riparian zones. When decomposing low-nutrient plant litter, microbes acquire nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from the environment (i.e., nutrient immobilization), and this process is potentially sensitive to nutrient loading and changing climate. Nonetheless, environmental controls on immobilization are poorly understood because rates are also influenced by plant litter chemistry, which is coupled to the same environmental factors. Here we used a standardized, low-nutrient organic matter substrate (cotton strips) to quantify nutrient immobilization at 100 paired stream and riparian sites representing 11 biomes worldwide. Immobilization rates varied by three orders of magnitude, were greater in rivers than riparian zones, and were strongly correlated to decomposition rates. In rivers, P immobilization rates were controlled by surface water phosphate concentrations, but N immobilization rates were not related to inorganic N. The N:P of immobilized nutrients was tightly constrained to a molar ratio of 10:1 despite wide variation in surface water N:P. Immobilization rates were temperature-dependent in riparian zones but not related to temperature in rivers. However, in rivers nutrient supply ultimately controlled whether microbes could achieve the maximum expected decomposition rate at a given temperature
