Concerning Barbarians and Romans, and RomanDiscourse on Music and Civilization
In Roman society, music can be interpreted in gendered terms. In music one finds a sexual division of notes, musical instruments, musical theory and musical practice. The musicianâs clothing and transvesticism can also be studied through the lens of gender. The musician and the dancer are ambivalent by nature because of their appearance, and are often positioned on the fringe of masculinity. In the emblematic story of Achilles, hiding in the gynaeceum of Skyros, or the true story of Claudius in Rome disguised as a woman, both men use the appearance of a woman musician. For the Romans, their stories are considered exempla, defining the borders between femininity and virility
Developing an Electricity Specific Multi-Regional Input-Output Model for Energy Policy Evaluation and Life Cycle Assessment
Input-output (IO) models have been used in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to help understand the economy-wide impacts of goods and services, expanding the boundaries of more traditional process-based studies. IO models are particularly suitable for studies focusing on industries that are part of the supply chain of many other processes, as is the case with electricity generation. However, existing IO-LCA tools usually fail to account for the large variation in regional electricity consumption mixes within the economies they describe, providing only average emissions estimates for electricity use. Using average emissions estimates can lead to misleading results when studying a process that differs significantly from the economy-wide mix.
This dissertation addresses this shortcoming by creating a multi-region input-output model (MRIO) focusing on the power generation and supply (PGS) sector that features a mixed-unit PGS sector disaggregated by generation type. The sector disaggregation procedure is combined with region-specific electricity information as well as electricity trading data to yield a technologically and geographically disaggregated model. This method allows for better modeling of both regional supply chains and emissions, yielding for region specific estimates that can be used with process-based methods to build more accurate hybrid LCA studies. While the focus is on the U.S. economy, the methodology can be easily adapted to any region(s) for which the relevant data is available.
The model is used explored in two different cases studies. First, environmental effects of national and regional changes in electricity consumption are analyzed using electricity projections to the year 2030. This scenario examines changes to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and water consumption (WC) by state and industry given the projected changes. The results show that tradeoffs between GHG and WC emissions per MWh differ for specific states and industries. The second case study looks at the use of electricity by data centers, both at a regional scale and from a practical business perspective, and explores the possible tradeoffs related to switch from regional grid electricity to dedicated renewable sources for operating data centers. The results focus on the effect that geographic distribution of data centers in the U.S. have on their emissions

Landscape and hunting: the economy of the eschatia
This paper explores the place of ancient Greek hunting within the Greek landscape and
environment, with particular reference to the eschatia, the marginal, uncultivated (or marginally
cultivated) land. It is part of a bigger project on the social history of hunting in archaic and classical
Greece, where emphasis is placed on the economic and dietary contribution of hunting for Greek
communities. Hunting has attracted scholarly attention, mostly as a result of the role that hunting
narratives play in Greek mythology, and the importance of hunting scenes in Greek art. Rather than
talking about the role of hunting in rites of passage, I would like to explore the relationships of
different social classes to hunting (which is understood here to include all forms of capturing animals
on land, including trapping and snaring). The âun-centralâ landscape of the eschatia appears to be an
important locus for hunting practices, and therefore, a productive landscape. Hunting in the eschatia
was opportunistic, required minimum effort in terms of crossing distances, allowed access to game
that could be profitable in the market, and made the transport of game easier to manage
Three-dimensional ultrasound for knee osteophyte depiction: a comparative study to computed tomography
Purpose
Osteophytes are common radiographic markers of osteoarthritis. However, they are not accurately depicted using conventional imaging, thus hampering surgical interventions that rely on pre-operative images. Studies have shown that ultrasound (US) is promising at detecting osteophytes and monitoring the progression of osteoarthritis. Furthermore, three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound reconstructions may offer a means to quantify osteophytes. The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of osteophyte depiction in the knee joint between 3D US and conventional computed tomography (CT).
Methods
Eleven human cadaveric knees were pre-screened for the presence of osteophytes. Three osteoarthritic knees were selected, and then, 3D US and CT images were obtained, segmented, and digitally reconstructed in 3D. After dissection, high-resolution structured light scanner (SLS) images of the joint surfaces were obtained. Surface matching and root mean square (RMS) error analyses of surface distances were performed to assess the accuracy of each modality in capturing osteophytes. The RMS errors were compared between 3D US, CT and SLS models.
Results
Average RMS error comparisons for 3D US versus SLS and CT versus SLS models were 0.87 mmâ±â0.33 mm (averageâ±âstandard deviation) and 0.95 mmâ±â0.32 mm, respectively. No statistical difference was found between 3D US and CT. Comparative observations of imaging modalities suggested that 3D US better depicted osteophytes with cartilage and fibrocartilage tissue characteristics compared to CT.
Conclusion
Using 3D US can improve the depiction of osteophytes with a cartilaginous portion compared to CT. It can also provide useful information about the presence and extent of osteophytes. Whilst algorithm improvements for automatic segmentation and registration of US are needed to provide a more robust investigation of osteophyte depiction accuracy, this investigation puts forward the potential application for 3D US in routine diagnostic evaluations and pre-operative planning of osteoarthritis

Among the remains of marble sculptures from the villa of Chiragan some of them, deposited in the museum of Antiquities in Toulouse, are described as pieces of musical instruments. There are mainly citharae and syrinx who belong to mythological characters, production of three-dimensional sculpture or reliefs. This study is based on an analysis of this material and would propose an identification, a date and some parallels in roman art at the same period. Vendries Christophe. Plectrum, cithara et fistula.
