Sex-selective abortions and infant mortality in India: the role of parents’ stated son preference
In India, millions of female foetuses have been aborted since the 1980s alongside an abnormally high infant girl mortality rate; this has generated a vast literature exploring the root causes of son preference. The literature is sparse, however, on how the decisions to abort or neglect girls are made. This paper examines mothers’ and fathers’ respective roles behind those decisions. Using NFHS-3 data, we show that sex- selective abortions are most commonly used if both spouses or if only the fathers prefer sons, while sex-selective neglect is used if only the mothers prefer sons
MicroRNA expression profiles in pediatric dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors.
© Springer Science+Business Media New York 2015Among noncoding RNAs, microRNAs (miRNAs) have been most extensively studied, and their biology has repeatedly been proven critical for central nervous system pathological conditions. The diagnostic value of several miRNAs was appraised in pediatric dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNETs) using miRNA microarrays and receiving operating characteristic curves analyses. Overall, five pediatric DNETs were studied. As controls, 17 samples were used: the FirstChoice Human Brain Reference RNA and 16 samples from deceased children who underwent autopsy and were not present with any brain malignancy. The miRNA extraction was carried out using the mirVANA miRNA Isolation Kit, while the experimental approach included miRNA microarrays covering 1211 miRNAs. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was performed to validate the expression profiles of miR-1909* and miR-3138 in all samples initially screened with miRNA microarrays. Our findings indicated that miR-3138 might act as a tumor suppressor gene when down-regulated and miR-1909* as a putative oncogenic molecule when up-regulated in pediatric DNETs compared to the control cohort. Comparison of assessments of fitness to drive for people with dementia
Cognitive tests are used to inform recommendations about the fitness to drive of people with dementia. The Rookwood Driving Battery (RDB) and Dementia Drivers' Screening Assessment (DDSA) are neuropsychological batteries designed to assist in this process. The aim was to assess the concordance between the classifications (pass/fail) of the RDB and DDSA in individuals with dementia, and to compare any discordant classifications against on-road driving ability. Participants were identified by community mental health teams and psychiatrists. Twenty four participants were recruited. The mean age was 74.1 (SD 8.9) years and 18 (75%) were men. Each participant was assessed on the RDB and DDSA in an order determined by random allocation. Those with discrepant results also had an on-road assessment. The agreement between the tests was 54% using a cut-off of > 6 on the RDB, and 75% using the cut-off to > 10 on the RDB. Three participants with discrepant results agreed to be assessed on the road and all were found to be safe to drive. The findings suggested that there was poor concurrent validity between the RDB and DDSA. This raises questions about the choice of assessments in making clinical recommendations about fitness to drive in people with dementia
Rural Malta : first results of the joint Belgo-Maltese survey project
The paper presents the first interdisciplinary results of a joint survey project in the north-west of Malta, with finds ranging from the Prehistoric till the Early Modern period. Three permanently inhabited sites were encountered dating to at least the late 6th or early 5th century BCE, with a clearer attestation in the Hellenistic/Roman and Late Antique periods. The resulting reconstructed settlement pattern of the Phoenician/Punic period suggests a managed landscape that seems to be a good reflexion of what is happening in North Africa and elsewhere in the central and western Mediterranean. At least from the Roman period on, these sites seem to have specialised on the production of olive oil.peer-reviewe

Prehistory of Sudan
The Republic of Sudan, northeast Africa, is bordered by Egypt, Libya, Chad, the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. To the east there is the Red Sea. With an area of 1,886,068 square kilometers, it is the third largest country in Africa. The country is marked by diversity in terms of environment, archaeology, and ways of living. The most well-known archaeological remains and periods are the pyramids from the Kingdom of Kerma (2500–1500 BC), the rise of the Kingdom of Kush (c. 785 BC–AD 350), the later Christian kingdoms of Nobatia, Makuria, and Alodia and the Funj Sultanate in central and eastern Sudan. Sudan’s complex history has seen Mahdi, Ottoman, British, and Islamist rule and is now a secular state. While the present population is estimated to be 70% Arab, there is a diverse range of groups, languages, and dialects
The chronological and social implications of the pottery from Jebel Moya (south-central Sudan)
Continued research at Jebel Moya shows that this burial and habitation site has a very long chronology and was the locus for a number of activities. This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of pottery from stratified contexts from the new field seasons, utilizing a statistical attribute approach that provides both clarity and avenues for further research. The stratigraphic sequence and radiometric dates show that the site was inhabited from at least the late 6th millennium to 2000 years ago. Our analyses reveal previously unknown types of pottery and a wider range within assemblages. Overall, there is a longer period of mid-late Holocene habitation than previously recognised. Results are considered within a broader contextual and comparative approach with central Sudan, showing the importance of rethinking networks between south-central and central Sudan
Role of interferon lambda 4 and ALT levels in optimising treatment of HCV for patients with low-stage fibrosis
The use of new anti-HCV drugs is currently limited by high costs and dual therapy; pegylated interferon
and ribavirin (peg-IFN+RBV) still represents the only affordable treatment in patients with low-stage fibrosis.
We evaluated the role of Interferon lambda4 (IFNL4) polymorphisms and its combination with on-treatment
alanine transaminase (ALT) modification in predicting sustained virological response (SVR) in HCV genotype
1 and 4 patients with low-stage fibrosis. We retrospectively analysed 124 patients with Metavir ≤F2, who
received dual therapy at our centre. Genotyping for IFNL4 polymorphisms was assessed at baseline, as well
as ALT levels (baseline and week 2, 4, 12 and 24 of therapy). Thirty patients (24%) were TT/TT, 74 (60%)
TT/DG and 20 (16%) DG/DG. The SVR rate was significantly higher in TT/TT genotype compare to TT/DG
and DG/DG (97% vs. 53% and 50%, respectively, p=0.001). Patients that achieved a 60% reduction of
ALT baseline value after 4 weeks of therapy had a significantly higher SVR rate (94% vs. 52%, p<0.001).
Factors significantly associated with SVR were TT/TT genotype (p=0.029), RVR (p=0.019) and 60% ALT reduction
at 4 week of therapy (p=0.005). The absence of both TT/TT genotype and 60% ALT reduction
were negative predictors of SVR (p<0.001). In conclusion, the combined use of IFNL4 polymorphisms and
ALT reduction at 4 week of treatment is able to optimize candidates’ selection for peg-IFN+RBV, discriminating
those that could still benefit from dual therapy from the ones that need the new regimen
Measurement of the Charged Multiplicities in b, c and Light Quark Events from Z0 Decays
Average charged multiplicities have been measured separately in , and
light quark () events from decays measured in the SLD experiment.
Impact parameters of charged tracks were used to select enriched samples of
and light quark events, and reconstructed charmed mesons were used to select
quark events. We measured the charged multiplicities:

which we derived the differences between the total average charged
multiplicities of or quark events and light quark events: and . We compared
these measurements with those at lower center-of-mass energies and with
perturbative QCD predictions. These combined results are in agreement with the
QCD expectations and disfavor the hypothesis of flavor-independent
