    General quasi-non-spreading linear three-dimensional wave-packets

    We introduce a general approach for generation of sets of three-dimensional quasi-non-spreading wavepackets propagating in linear media, also referred to as linear light bullets. The spectrum of rigorously non-spreading wavepackets in media with anomalous group velocity dispersion is localized on the surface of a sphere, thus drastically restricting the possible wavepacket shapes. However, broadening slightly the spectrum affords the generation of a large variety of quasi-non-spreading distributions featuring complex topologies and shapes in space and time that are of interest in different areas, such as biophysics or nanosurgery.     Re-routing of cooling water pipeline

    This thesis was made for Wärtsilä Finland Oy department of Power Plants. The purpose of this thesis was to compare different solutions and to find the best and cost-efficient solution for cooling water pipelines when radiators were located on the roof of the power plant. Making this thesis began by gathering all the possible solutions together and di-vides into different groups depending on the solution. There were five different groups and five different solutions were selected for a closer inspection. While searching the best route for cooling water pipelines I gathered information by in-terviewing designers, pipe-experts and engineers. The result is a well-defined matrix table where the comparison and all the differ-ent pipeline solutions were gathered. Prices for pipelines (€/m and €/kg), entry to Power House, entry from top or under the hall and directness were taken into ac-count in the comparison. The result of this thesis is good basis to start standardiz-ing the certain solution. The matrix is not included in this thesis because the in-formation is classified.Tämä päättötyö tehtiin Wärtsilä Finland Oyj Power Plants yksikölle. Tavoitteena oli vertailla eri ratkaisutapoja ja löytää paras ja edullisin ratkaisu jäähdytys-vesiputkistolle, kun jäähdyttimet sijaitsivat voimalaitoksen katolla. Päättötyön tekeminen alkoi keräämällä kaikki tämän hetkiset ratkaisumahdolli-suudet yhteen ja jakamalla ne ryhmiin käytetyn ratkaisumallin mukaan. Ryhmiä tuli 5 ja sieltä valittiin 5 erilaista ratkaisua lähempään tarkasteluun. Parasta putki-tusreittiä suunniteltaessa tietoa haettiin haastattelemalla suunnittelijoita, putkiasi-antuntijoita ja insinöörejä. Lopputuloksena saatiin selkeä matriisitaulukko, johon on koottu kaikki erilaiset putkitusmahdollisuudet ja niistä tehty vertailu. Vertailussa on otettu huomioon putkitushinnat (€/m ja €/kg), putkituksen sisääntuloreitti, sisääntulo halliin ylä- tai alaosasta sekä reitin suoruus. Tämän tutkimustyön tuloksia on helppo käyttää jat-kossa, kun tiettyä putkitusratkaisua aletaan standardoida. Taulukkoa ei ole liitetty tähän työhön, koska tiedot ovat luottamuksellisia

    Production Response and Digestive Enzymatic Activity of the Pacific White Shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) Intensively Pregrown in Microbial Heterotrophic and Autotrophic-Based Systems

    Shrimp postlarvae were reared into different microcosm systems without water exchange; a traditional system based on simple fertilization to improve microalgae concentration (control), an autotrophic system (AS) based on the promotion of biofloc and biofilm by the addition of fertilizer and artificial substrates and a heterotrophic system (HS) based on the promotion of heterotrophic bacteria by the addition of nitrogenous and carbonaceous sources and artificial substrates. Better growth performance and survival were registered in shrimp from the AS and HS compared to the control. Feed conversion ratios were below 0.7 for all treatments, but AS and HS were significantly lower than the control. Regarding digestive performance, no significant differences were observed for trypsin, amylase and lipase activities among AS and control shrimp; however, shrimp from HS showed a higher trypsin and amylase activities, suggesting a higher digestive activity caused by the presence of microbial bioflocs. The presence of biofilm and bioflocs composed by either autotrophic or heterotrophic organisms in combination with formulated feed improved the growth performance and survival of shrimp. Apparently, such combination fits the nutritional requirements of shrimp

    Morphological and molecular evidence of Oslerus osleri (Nematoda: Filaroididae) in the Andean fox (Lycalopex culpaeus)

    Oslerus osleri is a cosmopolitan filaroid nematode that parasitizes the respiratory system of domestic and wild canids. Natural infection by O. osleri is reported in the Andean fox (Lycalopex culpaeus) in this study. Nematodes, enclosed in small and compact fibrous nodules of 1 to 5 mm in diameter, were found on the surface of the trachea near the bronchial bifurcation on four Andean foxes during necropsy (one from Cuzco, Peru and three from Northwestern Patagonia in Argentina). The nematodes were identified as O. osleri by morphological and molecular methods. Ribosomal and mitochondrial DNA analyses were performed amplifying the second internal transcribed spacer region (ITS-2), the partial cytochrome c oxidase 1 (cox1), and the large subunit of nuclear ribosomal RNA (LSU rRNA) genes. Sequences of the ITS-2 and LSU rRNA had a genetic variation of 1.5% and 1.0%, respectively, with previous sequences of O. osleri registered in Genbank. This is the first amplification of the cox1 gene of O. osleri and demonstrated an identity of 92% to Perostrongylus falciformis (KY365437), and 90% to Angiostrongylus cantonensis (KY779735) and Angiostrongylus costaricensis (AP017675).Fil: Gomez Puerta, Luis A..     Phenotypic, transcriptomic, and genomic features of clonal plasma cells in light-chain amyloidosis

    Immunoglobulin light-chain amyloidosis (AL) and multiple myeloma (MM) are 2 distinct monoclonal gammopathies that involve the same cellular compartment: clonal plasma cells (PCs). Despite the fact that knowledge about MM PC biology has significantly increased in the last decade, the same does not apply for AL. Here, we used an integrative phenotypic, molecular, and genomic approach to study clonal PCs from 24 newly diagnosed patients with AL. Through principal-component-analysis, we demonstrated highly overlapping phenotypic profiles between AL and both monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance and MM PCs. However, in contrast to MM, highly purified fluorescence-activated cell-sorted clonal PCs from AL (n = 9) showed almost normal transcriptome, with only 38 deregulated genes vs normal PCs; these included a few tumor-suppressor (CDH1, RCAN) and proapoptotic (GLIPR1, FAS) genes. Notwithstanding, clonal PCs in AL (n=11) were genomically unstable, with a median of 9 copy number alterations (CNAs) per case, many of such CNAs being similar to those found in MM. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) performed in 5 AL patients revealed a median of 15 nonrecurrent mutations per case. Altogether, our results show that in the absence of a unifying mutation by WES, clonal PCs in AL display phenotypic and CNA profiles similar to MM, but their transcriptome is remarkably similar to that of normal PCs

    Multi-technical approach for the characterization of polychrome decorative surfaces at Spanish Mission Churches in Nueva Vizcaya (Chihuahua, Mexico)

    An interdisciplinary and multi-institutional group of science and art conservation specialists has provided new insight into the painting materials used in the polychrome walls and wooden ceilings in four seventeenth century Spanish colonial churches of Nueva Vizcaya (Chihuahua, Mexico). A multi-analytical study of the decorative surfaces was performed in situ using spectroscopic approaches (XRF, FORS), False Colour Infrared Reflectography–IRFC, as well as micro sampling (ATR-FTIR, LM, GC/MS). A survey of natural resources and study (ATR-FTIR, LM) was carried out to elucidate the natural occurrence of a select number of materials in the surrounding areas of the churches. The present paper presents a multi-analytical study and characterization of green, red-orange and black colour pigments and binders selected from the decorative surfaces. The aim of this study is to highlight relationships between local materials and those from the original polychrome ceilings, in order to understand the material and technological influences that converged in the Spanish colonial architecture of northern Mexico
