The optimality of continuous cover versus rotation forestry in the presence of fire risk

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the optimal harvesting decisions of a fire-exposed forest stand. An economic model is used to determine analytical continuous-time solutions for theoptimal schedule of thinnings and clearcuts. We offer new results by proposing that, while thinnings should be anticipated in the presence of fire hazard, forest rotations donot necessarily need to be shortened and may, under certain conditions, be lengthened. In fact, for sufficiently high levels of risk, clearcut forestry can be suboptimal, leading tothe adoption of a continuous cover regime

Destination management systems: creation of value for visitors of tourism destinations

    Get PDF
Considering the important role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in tourism, a growing number of destination management organisations (DMOs) have been adopting more complex destination web-applications/websites to tourism destinations – destination management systems (DMSs). However, the concept of DMS is far from being consensual. The present study aims to clarify the concept of DMS by identifying the main differences between DMS and other DMO web-applications/websites regarding functionalities targeted at potential visitors of destinations. This study is carried out based on a comparison between DMS-specific and DMS-non-specific sources (papers and book chapters). The results suggest that the major difference between DMS and more traditional DMO websites relies in the transaction dimension. While DMS-non-specific reviewed sources tend to focus more on informational functionalities, DMS-specific studies clearly highlight transaction tools. The study highlights the need to develop DMS including a more varied range of transactional and communication/relationship functionalities.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The strong growth in the number of diabetics in recent years has become a major health concern. The dependence on sugar consumption has caused a rapid growth in the level of diagnoses and in the number of deaths associated. In this context, the project developed allowed a study on how Diabetes can be detected in a timely manner, through the existence of pre-indicators of the disease, defining factors that may determine its onset. For this study, data are collected from Hospital de Santa Luzia (ULSAM), considering aspects such as patient profile, prescribed drugs and previous diagnoses. The results prove that machine learning models using profile data with medical drugs produced the best results, optimizing the predictive ability of Diabetes. This work has been supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the R&D Units Project Scope: UIDB/00319/202

This article analyses the abolition of the death penalty for civil crimes in Portugal (1867), which it interprets within a framework of institutional change. The authors argue that the origin of this abolition was an effective penetration of transactional liberal ideas among the Portuguese elite, and was made possible by the fact that the national and transnational security environment had calmed down, which in turn enabled the state to focus on the development and modernisation of Portuguese society. It was impossible for this progress to happen by socioeconomic means, which left moral or civilisational advances as the possible path to fuelling a strategy for progress in the second half of the 19th century.L’article analyse l’abolition de la peine de mort pour les crimes de droit commun au Portugal (1867) et l’interprète dans un cadre de changement institutionnel. ABSTRACT: This case study was conducted at the School of Basic Education of the 2nd and 3rd Cycles and Secondary Education José Falcão de Miranda do Corvo, and was being studied as a set of extra-curricular activities included in the Plan of Activities of this school. The activities, implemented in the context of non-formal learning, were the eTwinning Project "Is anybody out there? - ICT and collaborative sharing of knowledge”, the participation in the "Spring Day 2009" and the activity "April 25 Commemoration". The study aimed at analyzing and assessing the potential of ICT, with particular focus on Web 2.0 tools, to create collaborative and constructive environments for learning. In the case study is a focused qualitative, descriptive and interpretative research. Qualitatively, the results were very positive about the use of ICT and Web 2.0 in particular, to create collaborative environments for learning, sharing of knowledge and even the construction of knowledge. In the sense defined by Wenger has not been reached to develop a "community of practice" among teachers or among students. However it was recognized innovative ways of integrating ICT and Web 2.0 in teaching as well their motivating nature to provide the learning. At the end of the study are pointed its limitations and are suggested recommendations for future research in this investigation area

Creating shared value in Rock in Rio business model: case study

This discourse will attempt to discuss `Creation of Shared Value' (CSV) through the case study of the music festival "Rock in Rio" (RIR) in order to further understand the company's sustainability program. The main goal is to clearly recognize if RIR uses a genuine practice of CSV to accomplish their social policies. To commence, we started with the State of Art, studying the CSV theory created by Porter and Kramer, as well as the authors that were either in support of, or against, the strategy. Qualitative Research Method was used, thus focusing the enterprise case study, by analysing media interviews given by the managerial staff of RIR. Content analysis was used to process data and deliver results. The main limitation of the study was the lack of institutional information, due to an absence of responses, to the survey in sufficient time by RIR's managers, subsequently a triangulation of the information acquired could not be achieved.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
