    Auditoría ambiental: nuevos caminos en el control externo.

    El Estado, así como la sociedad, viene sufriendo diversas alteraciones. Consciente de estos cambios la auditoria gubernamental también pasa por un proceso de transformación. Entre las innumerables áreas a controlar, surge un nuevo campo que la auditoria gubernamental debe explotar: el Medio Ambiente. Lejos de la pretensión de agotar el asunto, el presente estudio trata de demostrar la aplicabilidad de una auditoria ambiental en el ámbito de una Entidad de Fiscalización Superior (EFS).     Ongoing and Upcoming Cold-Water Coral Multi Stressor Experiments

    Comunicación escrita (póster) a Congresos• Cold-water corals (CWC) form complex 3-D structures that are biodiversity hotspots. However, the knowledge about their ecophysiological response to global change stressors (i.e. warming, acidification, decrease of dissolved oxygen concentration) is still very limited, as well as their possible interactions with local stressors such as the impacts from mining and fishing activities. • Three long-term, multi stressor experiments will explore the combined impact of several environmental and local stressors based on the IPCC projections on different CWC species across the North Atlantic. • Further experiments will include the addition of particles from mining or sediment from trawling activities to all treatments after long-term experiments finish to study the potential physical damage and ecotoxicological effects. • The results from these studies will increase our knowledge on the potential consequences of global change and local stressors and their possible interactions on CWC species and ecosystems that they form. • The results will contribute to support science-based marine spatial planning for the North Atlantic.European Union Commission Horizon 2020 Programa (grant agreement 818123), FEDER ((ACORES-01-0145-FEDER-000140), Ayuntamiento de A Coruña (Spain) and Deep-Sea Biology Societ

    Hexagonal Hybrid Bismuthene by Molecular Interface Engineering

    High-quality devices based on layered heterostructures are typically built from materials obtained by complex solid-state physical approaches or laborious mechanical exfoliation and transfer. Meanwhile, wet-chemically synthesized materials commonly suffer from surface residuals and intrinsic defects. Here, we synthesize using an unprecedented colloidal photocatalyzed, one-pot redox reaction a few-layers bismuth hybrid of “electronic grade” structural quality. Intriguingly, the material presents a sulfur-alkyl-functionalized reconstructed surface that prevents it from oxidation and leads to a tuned electronic structure that results from the altered arrangement of the surface. The metallic behavior of the hybrid is supported by ab initio predictions and room temperature transport measurements of individual nanoflakes. Our findings indicate how surface reconstructions in two-dimensional (2D) systems can promote unexpected properties that can pave the way to new functionalities and devices. Moreover, this scalable synthetic process opens new avenues for applications in plasmonics or electronic (and spintronic) device fabrication.     Major role of nutrient supply in the control of picophytoplankton community structure.

    abstractThe Margalef´s mandala (1978) is a simplified bottom-up control model that explains how mixing and nutrient concentration determine the composition of marine phytoplankton communities. Due to the difficulties of measuring turbulence in the field, previous attempts to verify this model have applied different proxies for nutrient supply, and very often used interchangeably the terms mixing and stratification. Moreover, because the mandala was conceived before the discovery of smaller phytoplankton groups (picoplankton <2 μm), it describes only the succession of vegetative phases of microplankton. In order to test the applicability of the classical mandala to picoplankton groups, we used a multidisciplinary approach including specifically designed field observations supported by remote sensing, database analyses, and modeling and laboratory chemostat experiments. Simultaneous estimates of nitrate diffusive fluxes, derived from microturbulence observations, and picoplankton abundance collected in more than 200 stations, spanning widely different hydrographic regimes, showed that the contribution of eukaryotes to picoautotrophic biomass increases with nutrient supply, whereas that of picocyanobacteria shows the opposite trend. These findings were supported by laboratory and modeling chemostat experiments that reproduced the competitive dynamics between picoeukaryote sand picocyanobacteria as a function of changing nutrient supply.     extended abstract del posterIn order to investigate the role of turbulence mixing on structuring marine phytoplankton communities, the CHAOS project included a multidisciplinary approach involving specifically designed field observations supported by remote sensing, database analyses, and modeling and laboratory chemostat experiments. Field observations carried out in the outer part of Ría de Vigo in summer 2013 showed that, as a result of increased mixing levels, nitrate diffusive input into the euphotic layer was approximately 4-fold higher during spring tides. This nitrate supply could contribute to explain the continuous dominance of large-sized phytoplankton during the upwelling favorable season. Simultaneous estimates of nitrate diffusive fluxes, derived from microturbulence observations, and picoplankton abundance collected in more than 100 stations, spanning widely different hydrographic regimes, showed that the contribution of eukaryotes to picoautotrophic biomass increases with nutrient supply, whereas that of picocyanobacteria shows the opposite trend. These findings were supported by laboratory and modeling chemostat experiments that reproduced the competitive dynamics between picoeukaryote and picocyanobacteria as a function of changing nutrient supply.     Adolescentes y drogas : su relación con la delincuencia

    Esta investigación describe la relación con las drogas de una muestra de 286 Adolescentes en Conflicto con la Ley de la ciudad de Valencia (España). Tiene por objeto analizar relación entre trayectoria delictiva y consumo de drogas. Los resultados informan que a mayor incidencia delictiva, mayor dependencia. En cuanto a patrones de consumo por tipo de sustancia, el cannabis se asocia a trayectorias delictivas iniciales y la cocaína a trayectorias consolidadas. El consumo se produce en escenarios habituales diurnos, se extiende a otros de ocio nocturno, y particularmente forma parte de la vida cotidiana de los adolescentes en conflicto con la ley de trayectoria consolidada

    Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Its Enantiomers Prevent Methemoglobin Formation and DNA Damage Induced by Dapsone Hydroxylamine: Molecular Mechanism and Antioxidant Action

    Dapsone (DDS) therapy can frequently lead to hematological side effects, such as methemoglobinemia and DNA damage. In this study, we aim to evaluate the protective effect of racemic alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and its enantiomers on methemoglobin induction. The pre- and post-treatment of erythrocytes with ALA, ALA isomers, or MB (methylene blue), and treatment with DDS-NOH (apsone hydroxylamine) was performed to assess the protective and inhibiting effect on methemoglobin (MetHb) formation. Methemoglobin percentage and DNA damage caused by dapsone and its metabolites were also determined by the comet assay. We also evaluated oxidative parameters such as SOD, GSH, TEAC (Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity) and MDA (malondialdehyde). In pretreatment, ALA showed the best protector effect in 2.5 µg/mL of DDS-NOH. ALA (1000 µM) was able to inhibit the induced MetHb formation even at the highest concentrations of DDS-NOH. All ALA tested concentrations (100 and 1000 µM) were able to inhibit ROS and CAT activity, and induced increases in GSH production. ALA also showed an effect on DNA damage induced by DDS-NOH (2.5 µg/mL). Both isomers were able to inhibit MetHb formation and the S-ALA was able to elevate GSH levels by stimulating the production of this antioxidant. In post-treatment with the R-ALA, this enantiomer inhibited MetHb formation and increased GSH levels. The pretreatment with R-ALA or S-ALA prevented the increase in SOD and decrease in TEAC, while R-ALA decreased the levels of MDA; and this pretreatment with R-ALA or S-ALA showed the effect of ALA enantiomers on DNA damage. These data show that ALA can be used in future therapies in patients who use dapsone chronically, including leprosy patients
