Get PDF
This paper presents the results literature review, carried out with the objective of identifying prevalent research goals and challenges in the prediction of student behavior in MOOCs, using Machine Learning. The results allowed recognizingthree goals: 1. Student Classification and 2. Dropout prediction. Regarding the challenges, five items were identified: 1. Incompatibility of AVAs, 2. Complexity of data manipulation, 3. Class Imbalance Problem, 4. Influence of External Factors and 5. Difficulty in manipulating data by untrained personnel

To best serve Latino clients, counselor educators and supervisors must ensure counselors receives adequate training and practice in cultural competence. 5is article presents an overview of the needs of Spanish English bilingual (SEB) counselors, a case study that illustrates SEB counselors common concerns, and addressed three fundamental ethical questions: (a) Should supervisors be pro6cient in the language their supervisees are serving clients? (b) What constitutes su4cient cultural competence when supervisors oversee service to clients who are culturally diverse and do not speak English? (c) How can supervisors and counselor educators best support supervisees linguistically and culturally nuanced practice

University of Minnesota Ph.D. dissertation. 2017. Major: Natural Resources Science and Management. Advisor: Mae Davenport. 1 computer file (PDF); 222 pages. This dissertation explores a collective-efficacy theoretical framework as it relates to climate change and extreme weather response and water and stormwater management in a northern Minnesota coastal community. A multi method research approach was implemented in two sub-watersheds of the Lower St. Louis River Basin near Duluth, Minnesota that included 27 interviews, two focus groups, a workshop, and bio-physical modeling of potential climate impacts. Perceived collective-efficacy to make decisions and take action to manage natural resources and potential future resource impacts from climate and extreme weather impacts emerged as a prominent theme in analysis. This dissertation explores collective-efficacy in the study community through three approaches, 1) perceived collective-efficacy for resource management and climate and extreme weather response as it relates to relationship to place, 2) the use of a collective-efficacy framework throughout a sequential community-based, multi methods, natural resource management study, and 3) the application of collective-efficacy principals in an applied tool for use in local decision making. An exploration of collective-efficacy in local communities can help identify barriers to effective decision making and opportunities for progress in climate and extreme weather preparedness. This work both builds the body of literature on climate response related collective-efficacy research and offers an applied path for stakeholders working collectively to address challenging natural resource management issues

Irresponsible contagions: Propagating harmful behavior through imitation

‘Monkey see, monkey do’ is an old saying referring to imitating another\u27s actions without necessarily understanding the underlying motivations or being concerned about consequences, such as propagating harmful behaviors. This study examines the likelihood of firms imitating and proliferating others’ unethical, irresponsible practices thereby exacerbating harmful effects among even more firms; in doing so, irresponsible contagions can rapidly spread more broadly, negatively affecting even more consumers. Building upon rivalry- and information-based imitation theories, we examine if harmful behaviors of others, in combination with misbehavior of referent firms, influences the likelihood of a firm to engage in irresponsible consumer-related practices. After examining 25,824 firm-year observations over 12 years, our findings suggest that imitation of harmful product-related behavior occurs; with size an important factor related to proliferation of harmful behaviors. Testing the model against a holdout sample finds 94% accuracy. Implications for scholars, managers, and policy makers are explored

A phenomenological investigation of Spanish-English bilingual supervisees’ experience in clinical supervision

Get PDF
With a growing number of American households speaking languages other than English, the counseling profession must meet the counseling needs of non-English speaking clients. In turn, clinical supervisors and counselor educators must meet the needs of bilingual counselors. This existential phenomenological study examines the clinical supervision experience of Spanish-English bilingual supervisees. Participants' responses highlighted the compatibility or incompatibility of supervisor-supervisee knowledge and skills, the resilience and resourcefulness of Spanish-English bilingual supervisees, and the diversity of the Latino population. Overall, participants expressed the overwhelming desire to have a clinical supervisor that possessed cultural competence. The majority of participants also expressed interest in having a Spanish-English bilingual supervisor, although this proficiency was considered a luxury. Further research is needed to better understand the needs of Spanish-English bilingual supervisees

Students’ Voice and Disability: Ethical and methodological reflections for Special Pedagogy research

Considering the Students’ Voice takes us into a varied international and today also national pedagogical movement. The issue relating to the promotion of Students’ Voice research paths with young people with disabilities is delicate. The authors, after a presentation of the movement, address the important issues of ethics and methodological critical issues in the research paths within the Special Pedagogy. It is important to highlight that also in Special Pedagogy research the focus must be not just to ‘listening the students voice’, but also to help students to become ‘change agents’, because they are the potential of transformatio

Text mining in moocs : analysis of thematic relevance in discussion forums

Os resultados apontam que mediações nos fóruns de discussão, por meio de interações de tutores e/ou professores causam impacto significativo na relevância das postagens dos alunos.MOOCs are gradually evolving, which is due to the widespread dissemination of virtual learning environments, which provide participants with a means of interaction, one of which is the discussion forum, which has a lot of information about student engagement. However, reading all posts is a difficult task, as MOOCs often have a very high range of students enrolled. In this sense, text mining can help teachers gain relevant knowledge about student posts. Thus, in this study a text mining was performed using graphs, from the students' posts in discussion forums of two Lúmina platform MOOCs, one in which the offering teacher interacts with the students and another in which the teacher does not interact. In order to verify the relevance of such posts and observe the students' commitment to the course. For this, the Sobek graph generation tool was used and the thematic relevance coefficient (TRC) was calculated for each discussion forum. The results indicate that mediations in discussion forums, through interactions of tutors and teachers, have a significant impact on the relevance of students' posts
