Vamos a dar a conocer los primeros pasos de un proyecto de colaboración España / Portugal llamado, Red Ibérica de Observatorios para la Alfabetización e Inclusión Digital / Observatório para a Literacia e Inclusão Digital.     Relevance of the protein macrodipole in the membrane-binding process. Interactions of fatty-acid binding proteins with cationic lipid membranes

    The fatty acid-binding proteins L-BABP and Rep1-NCXSQ bind to anionic lipid membranes by electrostatic interactions. According to Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations, the interaction of the protein macrodipole with the membrane electric field is a driving force for protein binding and orientation in the interface. To further explore this hypothesis, we studied the interactions of these proteins with cationic lipid membranes. As in the case of anionic lipid membranes, we found that both proteins, carrying a negative as well as a positive net charge, were bound to the positively charged membrane. Their major axis, those connecting the bottom of the β-barrel with the α-helix portal domain, were rotated about 180 degrees as compared with their orientations in the anionic lipid membranes. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of the proteins showed that the positively charged membranes were also able to induce conformational changes with a reduction of the β-strand proportion and an increase in α-helix secondary structure. Fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs) are involved in several cell processes, such as maintaining lipid homeostasis in cells. They transport hydrophobic molecules in aqueous medium and deliver them into lipid membranes. Therefore, the interfacial orientation and conformation, both shown herein to be electrostatically determined, have a strong correlation with the specific mechanism by which each particular FABP exerts its biological function.Fil: Galassi, Vanesa Viviana.     Vegetation responses to variations in climate: A combined ordinary differential equation and sequential Monte Carlo estimation approach

    Vegetation responses to variation in climate are a current research priority in the context of accelerated shifts generated by climate change. However, the interactions between environmental and biological factors still represent one of the largest uncertainties in projections of future scenarios, since the relationship between drivers and ecosystem responses has a complex and nonlinear nature. We aimed to develop a model to study the vegetation’s primary productivity dynamic response to temporal variations in climatic conditions as measured by rainfall, temperature and radiation. Thus, we propose a new way to estimate the vegetation response to climate via a non-autonomous version of a classical growth curve, with a time-varying growth rate and carrying capacity parameters according to climate variables. With a Sequential Monte Carlo Estimation to account for complexities in the climate-vegetation relationship to minimize the number of parameters. The model was applied to six key sites identified in a previous study, consisting of different arid and semiarid rangelands from North Patagonia, Argentina. For each site, we selected the time series of MODIS NDVI, and climate data from ERA5 Copernicus hourly reanalysis from 2000 to 2021. After calculating the time series of the a posteriori distribution of parameters, we analyzed the explained capacity of the model in terms of the linear coefficient of determination and the parameters distribution variation. Results showed that most rangelands recorded changes in their sensitivity over time to climatic factors, but vegetation responses were heterogeneous and influenced by different drivers. Differences in this climate-vegetation relationship were recorded among different cases: (1) a marginal and decreasing sensitivity to temperature and radiation, respectively, but a high sensitivity to water availability; (2) high and increasing sensitivity to temperature and water availability, respectively; and (3) a case with an abrupt shift in vegetation dynamics driven by a progressively decreasing sensitivity to water availability, without any changes in the sensitivity either to temperature or radiation. Finally, we also found that the time scale, in which the ecosystem integrated the rainfall phenomenon in terms of the width of the window function used to convolve the rainfall series into a water availability variable, was also variable in time. This approach allows us to estimate the connection degree between ecosystem productivity and climatic variables. The capacity of the model to identify changes over time in the vegetation-climate relationship might inform decision-makers about ecological transitions and the differential impact of climatic drivers on ecosystems.Estación Experimental Agropecuaria BarilocheFil: Bruzzone, Octavio Augusto.     Confirmatory factor analysis of the Spanish version of the brief-COPE in Argentine elderly people

    Although the theoretical and methodological models in the study of coping have been updated several times in the last decades, they are mainly focused on the adolescent and young adult population. Thus, the first goal of this study was to investigate the latent structure of the Brief-Cope Inventory and to determine its fit in a sample of 504 Argentinian elderly adults of both genders, ranging in ages from 60 to 92 years old. The second goal was to confirm its three-dimensional structure in the collected data from the same sample. The results show that the two-factor model has the best fit for this sample. Likewise, these data ease our understanding of the factor structure behind the coping construct and highlight the active-cognitive coping profiles in the elderly adult population.Fil: Richard's, Maria Marta.     An alternative experimental methodology to determine the diagonal cracking resistance of steel-reinforced concrete beams

    [EN]An alternative experimental method for predicting the diagonal shear cracking resistance of steel-reinforced concrete beams is developed in this paper. Conventional extensometric strain-gauge rosettes are placed on the lateral surfaces of a set of four beams. As diagonal cracking propagates through the beams, the load-strain curves flatten out at a plateau and the mechanical property under consideration may be determined. The method is applied to four beams cast from pumpable and self-compacting concrete mixes with cement types I and IV containing electric arc furnace slag aggregates. The feasibility of applying standard design code formulas to the concretes containing these aggregates may therefore be studied and compared with other recent research works.     Maternal odor exposure modulates acceptance of a bitter taste in newborn and infant rats

    The acceptance of bitter, aversive, substances during early life is enhanced by stimulation with familiar, pre-exposed odors. Newborn rats exhibited heightened grasp responses toward an artificial nipple dispensing quinine, and drank more of this bitter solution, if concurrently stimulated with a lemon odor they had been exposed to shortly after birth. It yet unknown, however, if odors made familiar via normative developmental milestones also acquire modulatory influence upon seeking and intake of basic tastants. The current study assessed the influence of exposure to maternal odor on intake and grasp responses toward a surrogate nipple providing quinine, in 3-day (Experiment 1) or 12-day (Experiment 2) old, Wistar rat pups. The results revealed enhanced seeking and intake of the bitter solution, but not of water, in animals tested in the presence of the mother (and hence exposed to its odor cues), at both ages, compared to counterparts given either no explicit odor stimulation or stimulation to the odor of an unrelated dam. These results, obtained with a biologically relevant odor, are consistent with those previously found with a neutral, arbitrary odor. It seems that during the early stages of development, familiar odors regulate the acceptance of non-palatable, otherwise rejected, flavors.Fil: Ifrán, María Celeste.     Shear strength assessment of reinforced concrete components containing EAF steel slag aggregates

    Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) slag can be reused as aggregate in Portland cement concrete mixes. The addition of EAFS and other waste co-products (fly ash, blast furnace slag) will modify the binding properties and will, importantly, enhance the global sustainability of such concretes. These mix designs offer acceptable pumpability and self-compaction in the fresh state and can be reinforced with fibers. In this study, eight different concrete mixes are designed within the range of medium-strength concretes (30–50 MPa) and are characterized in both the fresh and the hardened state. Large concrete volumes are used to pour reinforced beams, which are then subjected to small-span high-load tests to evaluate their resistance to shear stress, by analyzing two types of transversal (shear) reinforcement. The tests yielded promising results, contributing additional evidence on the viability of using recycled EAFS aggregate in structural applications.     Preparation and Characterization of New Liposomes. Bactericidal Activity of Cefepime Encapsulated into Cationic Liposomes

    Cefepime is an antibiotic with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. However, this antibiotic has several side effects and a high degradation rate. For this reason, the preparation and characterization of new liposomes that are able to encapsulate this antibiotic seem to be an important research line in the pharmaceutical industry. Anionic and cationic liposomes were prepared and characterized. All cationic structures contained the same cationic surfactant, N,N,N-triethyl-N-(12-naphthoxydodecyl)ammonium. Results showed a better encapsulation-efficiency percentage (EE%) of cefepime in liposomes with phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol than with 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DOPE). The presence of cholesterol and the quantity of egg-yolk phospholipid in the liposome increased the encapsulation percentage. The bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli of cefepime loaded into liposomes with phosphatidylcholine was measured. The inhibitory zone in an agar plate for free cefepime was similar to that obtained for loaded cefepime. The growth-rate constant of E. coli culture was also measured in working conditions. The liposome without any antibiotic exerted no influence in such a rate constant. All obtained results suggest that PC:CH:12NBr liposomes are biocompatible nanocarriers of cefepime that can be used in bacterial infections against Escherichia coli with high inhibitory activity

    Can mask mandates boost nature-based tourism? The role of escapism and travel anxiety

    Tourism in a post-pandemic era will likely be oriented toward nature because contact with nature has restorative health benefits. The purpose of this study was to analyze the antecedents of tourists’ intentions to visit nature-based resorts during a pandemic. A nationally representative sample of the Spanish population (n = 500) was recruited by an online commercial panel to test and empirically validate the proposed conceptual framework. The findings confirmed a direct relationship between negative perceptions of wearing face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic and tourists’ intentions to visit nature-based resorts. The relationship between the perceived negative effects of wearing face masks and the intention to visit nature-based resorts was positively mediated by the need for escapism. This impact was less pronounced for anxious travelers, as shown by results corroborating the moderating effect of travel anxiety.
