    Density Fluctuations in an Electrolyte from Generalized Debye-Hueckel Theory

    Near-critical thermodynamics in the hard-sphere (1,1) electrolyte is well described, at a classical level, by Debye-Hueckel (DH) theory with (+,-) ion pairing and dipolar-pair-ionic-fluid coupling. But DH-based theories do not address density fluctuations. Here density correlations are obtained by functional differentiation of DH theory generalized to {\it non}-uniform densities of various species. The correlation length ξ\xi diverges universally at low density ρ\rho as (Tρ)1/4(T\rho)^{-1/4} (correcting GMSA theory). When ρ=ρc\rho=\rho_c one has ξξ0+/t1/2\xi\approx\xi_0^+/t^{1/2} as t(TTc)/Tc0+t\equiv(T-T_c)/T_c\to 0+ where the amplitudes ξ0+\xi_0^+ compare informatively with experimental data.Comment: 5 pages, REVTeX, 1 ps figure included with epsf.     Change and continuity in newspaper coverage of popular music since 1955: Evidence from the United States, France, Germany, and the Netherlands

    In this article, we describe general features of popular music coverage in elite newspapers in the United States, France, Germany, and the Netherlands from 1955 to 2005. Drawing on data from content analysis of over 4,000 newspaper articles sampled in four reference years (1955, 1975, 1995, and 2005), we document broad changes and continuities in the extent, focus, and form of popular music coverage in mainstream media outlets of each country

    Etiology of nocturia response in men with diminished bladder capacity

    Aims: To test the hypothesis that patients with nocturia owing to diminished global or nocturnal bladder capacity improve via increased bladder capacity. Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of voiding diaries completed at a VA urology clinic between 2008-2017. Inclusion required patients aged at least 18 years, male, undergoing treatment for nocturia, and having completed at least two 24-hour voiding diaries >= 1 month apart. Patients were divided into two cohorts: responders (any decline in nocturia) and non-responders (no change or any increase in nocturia). Patients were further sub-stratified as having low global bladder capacity (maximum voided volume [MVV] = 200 mL). Wilcoxon rank-sum was applied with a Bonferroni correction to test significance. Results: Forty pre- and post-treatment diaries from 27 patients, and 19 pre- and post-treatment diaries from 17 patients were identified as having low global and low nocturnal bladder capacity, respectively. Nocturia responders with low global bladder capacity demonstrated significant decline compared to non-responders in nocturnal urine volume (NUV) (-140 vs +75, P < 0.01) and nocturnal bladder capacity index (NBCi) (-0.59 vs +0.23, P < 0.01). Patients with low nocturnal bladder capacity similarly demonstrated decreased NUV (-30 vs +160, P = 0.04) and NBCi (-1.4 vs +0.33, P < 0.01). There was no significant change in MVV or NMVV for either group. Conclusions: Treatment directed at lowering nocturnal urine production and enabling patients to consistently void at capacity is a rational strategy to treat nocturia in patients with low bladder capacity

    The dance of markets and movements:The emergence and development of dance genres in the US, UK, and the Netherlands, 1985–2005

    This paper investigates the interplay between fields, markets, and movements in the emergence and development of new cultural categories. While some scholars argue that the rise of new genres is driven by internal resource mobilization, others contend that external market and field environments can both constrain and enable their emergence and growth. Through a cross-national comparative study of electronic/dance music and its various genres from 1985 to 2005, we demonstrate that genre emergence and development are influenced by their embeddedness in different field environments: the environment of proximate genres, the mainstream music market and the transnational field level. The impact of these field environments on the emergence and development of dance genres, however, varies by country. Notably, markets and genre movements are more strongly coupled in the UK and the Netherlands compared to the US. In both European countries, the mainstream success of genres drives their development through a mechanism of differentiation, leading to the creation of new and distinct genres as a reaction against increased visibility in the mainstream music charts. These findings highlight multiple ways in which markets and genre movements can interact, enriching our understanding of how new cultural categories emerge

    Compartmentalisation and localisation of the translation initiation factor (eIF) 4F complex in normally growing fibroblasts

    Previous observations of association of mRNAs and ribosomes with subcellular structures highlight the importance of localised translation. However, little is known regarding associations between eukaryotic translation initiation factors and cellular structures within the cytoplasm of normally growing cells. We have used detergent-based cellular fractionation coupled with immunofluorescence microscopy to investigate the subcellular localisation in NIH3T3 fibroblasts of the initiation factors involved in recruitment of mRNA for translation, focussing on eIF4E, the mRNA cap-binding protein, the scaffold protein eIF4GI and poly(A) binding protein (PABP). We find that these proteins exist mainly in a soluble cytosolic pool, with only a subfraction tightly associated with cellular structures. However, this "associated" fraction was enriched in active "eIF4F" complexes (eIF4E.eIF4G.eIF4A.PABP). Immunofluorescence analysis reveals both a diffuse and a perinuclear distribution of eIF4G, with the perinuclear staining pattern similar to that of the endoplasmic reticulum. eIF4E also shows both a diffuse staining pattern and a tighter perinuclear stain, partly coincident with vimentin intermediate filaments. All three proteins localise to the lamellipodia of migrating cells in close proximity to ribosomes, microtubules, microfilaments and focal adhesions, with eIF4G and eIF4E at the periphery showing a similar staining pattern to the focal adhesion protein vinculin
