’Oh, of course, one accepts the Gospels, naturally’: Subversive Use of the Bible in Graham Greene’s Monsignor Quixote

When Graham Greene wrote Monsignor Quixote (published in 1982), one of his aims was to reflect critically on the role of the Catholic Church in the Spain of the late 1970s, as well as on the support this institution offered to the former dictatorship of Franco within the so called ‘National Catholicism.’ In this novel, the reader witnesses the evolution of the protagonist, Father Quixote, from a religious living a complacent life in a small village in La Mancha to a priest in rebellion against the conservative hierarchy of the Catholic Church in Spain. Drawing upon Gerard Genette’s theory of transtextuality, I will examine Greene’s use of different religious texts to fight a model of conservative Catholic Church that he rejects. I will focus my analysis especially on the intertextual and metatextual references to the Gospels that the Bishop of La Mancha/Father Herrera and Father Quixote make in their dialogic interactions, references that portray their different vision of the role that the Church should have in society.         &nbsp

The Ethics of Facing Western Notions in Graham Greene’s A Burnt-Out Case

Taking as a basis Søren Kierkegaard’s narrative strategy of attack and defence, this paper will analyse the representation of western civilization in connection with the worldview of the native people living in a leper colony in Belgian Congo in Graham Greene’s novel A Burnt-Out Case. I will examine concretely the way in which Greene attacks in the novel the hegemonic structure of the European colonizers, which both ignores and imposes itself on the African native society, considering it a no-structure. Additionally, I will study the cases of the priests in the leper colony and of doctor Colin, characters that, being on the frontier between both value systems, become cultural translators and thus make communication possible. These characters acknowledge that the native way of life is as legitimate as the European and represent the possibility of an empathic side of western civilization. In contrast with the attack mentioned above, with the priests and Dr Colin Greene defends the European community living in the area. Through the use of the narrative strategy of attack and defence, therefore, contradictory messages are inserted in the text so that the readers take an active role solving the paradoxes they find in their reading. Finally, I will focus on the main protagonist, Querry, whose internal journey starts with his contact with Deo Gratias, a member of the native society, and whose spiritual evolution throughout the novel cannot be explained without his experience with the native culture

‘Civilizing’ Africa: Livingstone’s Inheritance in A Burnt-Out Case, by Graham Greene and El sueño del celta, by Mario Vargas Llosa

En este artículo usamos el concepto de „semiosfera‟ desarrollado por el estudioso ruso-estonio Juri Lotman para examinar las relaciones entre las comunidades nativas y las europeas en el Congo belga creadas por Graham Greene en A Burnt-Out Case y por Mario Vargas Llosa en El sueño del celta. Con este análisis tratamos de probar que aunque ambos autores denuncian con sus obras las terribles consecuencias de la colonización europea para los africanos, las comunidades nativas son descritas desde un punto de vista occidental y paternalista.In this article the concept of „semiosphere‟, developed by the Russian-Estonian scholar Juri Lotman, is used to examine the relationship between the African and the European communities in the Congo portrayed by Graham Greene in A Burnt-Out Case and by Mario Vargas Llosa in El sueño del celta. With this analysis I will prove that even though both authors denounce the terrible consequences of the European colonization had for the African people, the native communities in the novels are still depicted from a western paternalistic perspective

Levantamiento arquitectónico y estudio físico-constructivo del "Molí Paperer"

El molino papelero de Martorell data del 1739. Desde su origen hasta la actualidad, ha sufrido una serie de cambios provocados tanto por las necesidades industriales de cada momento, como por las constantes riadas que se sucedían en Martorell. Por estos motivos el edificio presenta cierta dificultad a la hora de estudiarlo. Las ampliaciones y pequeñas intervenciones que se le han realizado, crean conflicto para establecer la tipología constructiva correspondiente a cada época. El molino cesa su producción definitivamente en 1964 y desde entonces no ha recibido el mantenimiento adecuado, mostrando en la actualidad un avanzado estado de degradación constructiva con el agotamiento de sus elementos estructurales y constructivos. Los objetivos del proyecto se centran en: - un estudio histórico de la evolución del molino - un levantamiento gráfico - un estudio de los elementos constructivos - un análisis de las lesiones existentes con sus propuestas de actuación - un estudio de la maquinaria propia del molino papelero. Production Model Implementing Lean Manufacturing Tools to Increase Order Fulfillment in SMEs of the Textile Manufacturing Sector

Due to the context of the economic recession that the country is going through triggered by the covid-19 pandemic and considering the importance of the textile and clothing sector in Peru, order fulfillment is a requirement in the business world; when there is no control over it, it turns into an indicator of recurring issues for SMEs and MSMEs of the textile manufacturing sector. This study proposes a production model focused on the mentioned indicator to improve efficiency in the coating process through a management model based on 5S, TPM (autonomous maintenance), and ergonomics with help of simulation software, such as Arena Simulator, RULA and Delmia V5. After the implementation of this model, positive results were obtained, which showed an increase in overall global efficiency of the machinery by 24.23%, a reduction of supplies search time by 10.63%, and improvements in the risk level due to bad posture to finally get an increase of 45.50% in order fulfillment, on time, in full

Uso de dispositivos móviles y dislexia en estudiantes de primaria de instituciones educativas públicas, San Juan de Lurigancho, 2023

La presente investigación tiene como objetivo determinar el nivel de relación del uso de dispositivos móviles con la dislexia en estudiantes de primaria, San Juan de Lurigancho, 2023. La muestra fue conformada de 304 estudiantes del sexo varones y mujeres entre las edades de 6 a 11 años. El diseño es no experimental de corte transversal de tipo correlacional, de muestreo no probabilístico. Los instrumentos que se utilizaron fueron cuestionario de experiencia relacionadas al móvil (CERM) de Beranuy et a (2009), ficha de observación de Toro y Cevera (2009). Los resultados manifiestan evidencia que existe una correlación positiva débil y un coeficiente de Rho de Spearman= (0,237**), con un valor de significancia (.000), lo cual es menor p < 0.05, entre las variables de estudio uso del móvil con dislexia. Lo que quiere decir que cuando aumenta la dimensión uso comunicacional de igual manera aumenta la dimensión dislexia inferencial

The qualitative analysis of a short sequence carried out emerges into a theoretical reflection about both the functioning of humor itself and about familiar conversation in general

Planeación estratégica y la reorganización de Cáritas Nacional de Costa Rica

Proyecto de Graduación (Maestría en Administración de Empresas) Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, Escuela de Administración de Empresas, 2002.Cáritas Nacional de Costa Rica es una institución de la Iglesia Católica, que se dedica a promover proyectos de acción social a la luz de la Doctrina Social de la Iglesia. Tiene a su cargo la coordinación de las siete Cáritas Diocesanas. Su función se ha desvirtuado, debido a que se dedicó a ejecutar proyectos y se descentralizaron sus funciones. Por otra parte, debido a los altos índices de desarrollo humano que presenta el país, se ha dejado de ser sujeto de ayuda internacional. Este trabajo plantea una reestructuración y un plan estratégico de sus funciones, de acuerdo a la metodología de planificación estratégica de Michael Porter, y mediante el análisis FODA. Se proponen cambios administrativos para que la institución se convierta en un ente rector de la política social de la Iglesia, y utilice una metodología estandarizada de formulación y evaluación de proyectos sociales.
