    La tesis consta de 4 proyectos: dos estudios de intervención, aleatorizados, paralelos y controlados, uno sobre los efectos de productos del cacao y otro sobre los de fibra soluble, Plantago ovata husk (Po-husk), sobre biomarcadores de enfermedad cardiovascular (ECV) en sujetos hipercolesterolémicos. El tercero es la identificación de compuestos fenólicos del aceite de oliva virgen (AOV) en plasma humano (en ayunas y en fase postprandial) y el cuarto, el desarrollo de una aplicación informática para implementar los criterios CONSORT.Los productos del cacao y Po-husk reducen las concentraciones plasmáticas de c-LDL y ejercen efectos beneficiosos sobre otros biomarcadores de ECV.Además se han detectado hasta 10 compuestos fenólicos del AOV, incluido el 3,4-DHPEA-EDA, en plasma humano postprandrial.Finalmente, la incorporación de productos del cacao o Po-husk o el AOV o su combinación a una dieta cardiosaludable se adecuará al perfil de biomarcadores de riesgo de ECV de cada paciente.The thesis is based on 4 projects: 2 randomised, controlled, interventional studies, one of the cocoa cream products and the other of the soluble fibre (Plantago ovata husk (Po-husk) on biomarkers of CVD. Third, the virgin olive oil (VOO) phenolic compounds identification in fasting and postprandial human plasma, and fourth, designed a technology application to facilitate the implementation of criteria CONSORT statement.The cocoa cream products and Po-husk reduced in plasma LDL-c and also, had beneficial effects on other CVD biomarkers and risk factors.Also, had been detected until 10 phenolic compounds from VOO, including 3,4-DHPEA-EDA, in human postprandial plasma.Finally, applying cocoa products or Po-husk or VOO or in combination in a cardio-protective diet warrants consideration as individualised therapeutic measures based on the individual's CVD risk factor profile

    Effects of a Tapering Period on Physical Condition in Soccer Players

    The aim of this research was to analyze the effects of a 2-week step tapering period on lower-limb muscle power, change of direction (COD) and acceleration capacities, and on the stress-recovery state in an amateur soccer team. Twenty-two male players were included in the study. After a 6-week progressive training, the sample was divided into experimental group (EG) (n = 11), which did a 2-week period of taper in which training volume was 50% reduced (intensity was kept high) and control group (CG) (n = 11), which kept on with the training. Muscle power (countermovement jump test), acceleration (10-m sprint test), COD (Illinois test), and stress and recovery perceptions (RESTQ questionnaire) were evaluated before training, at the end of it (pretapering, PRE-TP) and after the tapering period (posttapering, POST-TP). After the taper, the EG in comparison with the CG showed significantly improved power (1,029.71 ± 108.51 W·kg−1 vs. 1,084.21 ± 110.87 W·kg−1; p ≤ 0.01), acceleration (1.72 ± 0.09 seconds vs. 1.67 ± 0.07 seconds; p ≤ 0.05), and lower stress levels (1.9 ± 0.5 vs. 1.6 ± 0.5; p ≤ 0.01) (PRE-TP vs. POST-TP, respectively). Change of direction did not show significant changes. In conclusion, a 2-week step tapering program was found to be an effective periodization strategy to increase muscle power and acceleration, and to reduce stress perception in soccer amateur players

    Dried apple enriched with mandarin juice counteracts tamoxifen induced oxidative stress in rats

    [EN] The effect of a product made of dehydrated apples enriched with mandarin juice by vacuum impregnation on markers of oxidative stress (plasma antioxidant capacity, carbonyl groups (CGs), 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8OHdG) and alpha-tocopherol) was tested in rats. Six groups of animals were studied: one group was fed a standard diet; two groups were supplemented with dehydrated apple either impregnated or not with mandarin juice throughout 28 days; and three groups (one unsupplemented and two supplemented) were additionally treated with tamoxifen (TAM) for 21 days used for induction of oxidative stress. The rats treated with TAM showed an increase in aminotransferases, CGs and 8OHdG. All of these effects were significantly decreased in the animals after apple snack consumption; the addition of mandarin juice into the apple mainly accounts for increased levels of alpha-tocopherol in plasma and liver.
