The crime of high treason lese-majesty (primeira cabeça) in conjuração baiana (bahia’s conspiracy) of 1798: continuity in legal modernity

From the analysis of the information contained in the Records of the Devassas da Conjuração Baiana (judicial proceeding filed by the Portuguese crown) of 1798, in the punitive logic of local power and metropolitan authorities, it is clear that the circumscription of the social bases of the event resulted from a social cleavage intended to maintain the order in Portugal and overseas at the end of the 18th century. On the one hand, four free men, poor and pardos, were exemplarily punished, reinforcing the strength and intrinsic superiority of Portuguese absolutism when questioned. On the other hand, to continue governing, the Portuguese crown needed to negotiate with broad sectors of that society, recognizing the legitimacy of the political exercise and the struggle for the rights of those men. However, the transition from legal pluralism to legal modernity in the Portuguese Ancien Régime was only possible because the hierarchy inherent to slavery was not questioned

To preach the principle of legality would be absolutely innocuous, if there were no means to impose the submission of the Administration to the juridical order, from which emanates the transcendent importance of control systems on public functions. The Brazilian Constitution covers different control mechanisms, which may be classified in internal control, exerted by the Administration of the Power itself which edited the act, and external control, exerted by bodies other than those of the Administration from which the act was emanated

The type specimens of 142 nominal species of chewing and sucking lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Amblycera, Ischnocera and Anoplura) held in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil (MZUSP) are listed. The list includes species in the families: Menoponidae and Gyropidae (Suborder Amblycera); Philopteridae (including species initially described in Heptapsogastridae) and Trichodectidae (Suborder Ischnocera); and Hoplopleuridae (Suborder Anoplura). The following type categories are represented in the collection: holotype, allotype, paratype, syntype, neotype, neoallotype, neoparatype and paralectotype. Information is taken from card data, and includes changes in nomenclatural status for each species since their original description. Two additional lists, one with updated scientific names for the lice (Appendix 1) and another with those for the host taxa (Appendix 2), are included.

Border Crossing in Contemporary Brazilian Culture: Global Perspectives from the Twenty-First Century Literary Scene

    Get PDF
Abstract: This paper investigates the process of internationalisation of Brazilian literature in the twenty-first century from the perspective of the publishing market. For this, we analyse how Brazil has responded to globalisation and what effects of cultural globalisation can be seen in the Brazilian literary scene, focusing on the novel. Observing the movement of the novelists throughout the globe, the reception of Brazilian literature in the United Kingdom and the relations between art and the literary market in Brazil, we intend to provoke some reflections on Brazilian cultural history in the light of the twenty-first century

The Design Principles of the Elixir Type System

Elixir is a dynamically-typed functional language running on the Erlang Virtual Machine, designed for building scalable and maintainable applications. Its characteristics have earned it a surging adoption by hundreds of industrial actors and tens of thousands of developers. Static typing seems nowadays to be the most important request coming from the Elixir community. We present a gradual type system we plan to include in the Elixir compiler, outline its characteristics and design principles, and show by some short examples how to use it in practice. Developing a static type system suitable for Erlang's family of languages has been an open research problem for almost two decades. Our system transposes to this family of languages a polymorphic type system with set-theoretic types and semantic subtyping. To do that, we had to improve and extend both semantic subtyping and the typing techniques thereof, to account for several characteristics of these languages -- and of Elixir in particular -- such as the arity of functions, the use of guards, a uniform treatment of records and dictionaries, the need for a new sound gradual typing discipline that does not rely on the insertion at compile time of specific run-time type-tests but, rather, takes into account both the type tests performed by the virtual machine and those explicitly added by the programmer. The system presented here is "gradually" being implemented and integrated in Elixir, but a prototype implementation is already available. The aim of this work is to serve as a longstanding reference that will be used to introduce types to Elixir programmers, as well as to hint at some future directions and possible evolutions of the Elixir language
