    Luminescence and vacuum ultraviolet excitation spectroscopy of cerium doped Gd3Ga3Al2O12 single crystalline scintillators under synchrotron radiation excitations

The work of A.P.K. was supported by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation , state contracts No. 11.6181.2017/ITR .Cerium doped Gd3Ga3Al2O12 (GGAG) single crystals as well as GGAG:Ce single crystals co-doped by divalent (Mg2+, Ca2+), trivalent (Sc3+) or tetravalent (Zr4+, Ti4+) ions have been studied by means of the excitation luminescence spectroscopy in vacuum ultraviolet spectral range. Synchrotron radiation from the undulator beam was utilized for the luminescence excitation in the energy range from 4.5 to 800 eV. The influence of the co-dopant ions on the excitonic transitions as well as on the intrinsic defects in GGAG was revealed examining the luminescence emission and excitation spectra of both Gd3+ and Ce3+ ions in all single crystals studied. Special attention was paid to the analysis of Ce3+ excitation spectra in VUV spectral range (4.5–45 eV) where multiplication of electronic excitation (MEE) processes occur. It was obtained that GGAG:Ce single crystals having different co-dopant ions reveal distinguished efficiency of MEE.     Optical characteristics of single crystal Gd3Al2Ga3O12 : Ce

    New emerging high-energy radiation detection techniques are based on the use of rare-earth ion doped materials. There is a great demand for new inorganic scintillators for medical applications, including X-ray and g radiation detection. In these applications, the new scintillating materials must comply with the main requirements such as high optical quality, high light yield, short response time etc. Materials satisfying these requirements include Gd3Al2Ga3O12 : Ce (GAGG : Ce) scintillating single crystals. By now the optical characteristics of GAGG : Ce have been studied insufficiently. We have therefore measured the spectral reflectance and transmittance characteristics of these crystals using optical spectroscopy in the 200–750 nm range. We have also measured the absorbance and refractive indices and the extinction coefficients, and assessed the optical band gap for GAGG : Ce crystals. For measuring the refractive indices, we have used two spectrophotometric methods, i.e. by the measured Brewster angle and by the reflectance for low incidence angles, i.e., close to the normal.     Scintillation materials capable of transforming absorbed high-energy particles into visible radiation photons find multiple applications including advanced medical visualization methods. Gd3Al2Ga3O12 : Ce is a promising oxygen-containing sсintillator for fabrication of detecting crystals of positron emission tomographs due to its unique properties, e.g. high density, high light yield, radiation hardness etc. However its kinetic parameters currently restrict its use in this field. Attempts at improving the luminescence rise and decay time kinetics by introducing additional impurities have become a top priority task for many researchers. Analyzing literary data one can conclude that the optical parameters of co-doped crystals have been studied insufficiently or have not been studied at all. We have studied Ca2+ and Zr4+ co-doped Gd3Al2Ga3O12 : Ce single crystals by optical spectroscopy in the 200–2200 nm. We have taken the optical transmittance, absorption and reflection spectra and measured the refractive indices. Dispersion curves have been obtained by approximation of experimental refractive indices using the Brewster method and the Cauchy equation. Material constants of these equations have been estimated for each of the co-doped crystals

    Formation processes of methane-derived authigenic carbonates from the Gulf of Cadiz

    The Gulf of Cadiz, NE Atlantic, represents an area of extensive formation of methane-derived authigenic carbonates (MDAC), indicative of fluid seepage. These MDAC, that reach extraordinary length and thickness, were geophysically mapped and sampled and the recovered carbonate-cemented material has δ13C values as low as − 56.2‰ VPDB, indicating methane as the major carbon source. The MDAC form two main lithologic groups, one mainly comprising dolomite and the second dominated by aragonite. The dolomite-dominated samples were found along fault-controlled diapiric ridges, on some mud volcanoes and mud diapirs, all on the pathway of the Mediterranean Outflow Water, and along fault scarps. Aragonite pavements were found associated with mud volcanoes and along fault scarps, but are otherwise not restricted to the pathways of the Mediterranean Outflow Water. Based on the results from this study, we propose that the two lithologic groups reflect different geochemical formation environments associated with a formation model based on their morphology, mineralogy and geochemistry. The aragonite-dominated samples represent precipitation of authigenic carbonates at the sediment–seawater interface or close to it, in a high alkalinity environment resulting from anaerobic oxidation of methane-rich fluids venting into sulphate-bearing porewaters. In contrast, the dolomite-dominated samples result from cementation along fluid conduits inside the sedimentary column with a somewhat restricted seawater ventilation. The dolomite chimneys form in places presently swept by the strong flow of the Mediterranean undercurrent so that the unconsolidated sediments are eroded and the chimneys are exposed at the seafloor. The widespread and large abundance of MDAC is a direct evidence of extensive methane seepage episodes in the Gulf of Cadiz. The coincidence of the different lithologic types in close spatial and temporal association indicates a persistence of seepage episodes in some structures over large periods of time.publishe

    Unveiling the Link: Exploring Mitochondrial Dysfunction as a Probable Mechanism of Hepatic Damage in Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome

    PTSD is associated with disturbed hepatic morphology and metabolism. Neuronal mitochondrial dysfunction is considered a subcellular determinant of PTSD, but a link between hepatic mitochondrial dysfunction and hepatic damage in PTSD has not been demonstrated. Thus, the effects of experimental PTSD on the livers of high anxiety (HA) and low anxiety (LA) rats were compared, and mitochondrial determinants underlying the difference in their hepatic damage were investigated. Rats were exposed to predator stress for 10 days. Then, 14 days post-stress, the rats were evaluated with an elevated plus maze and assigned to HA and LA groups according to their anxiety index. Experimental PTSD caused dystrophic changes in hepatocytes of HA rats and hepatocellular damage evident by increased plasma ALT and AST activities. Mitochondrial dysfunction was evident as a predominance of small-size mitochondria in HA rats, which was positively correlated with anxiety index, activities of plasma transaminases, hepatic lipids, and negatively correlated with hepatic glycogen. In contrast, LA rats had a predominance of medium-sized mitochondria. Thus, we show links between mitochondrial dysfunction, hepatic damage, and heightened anxiety in PTSD rats. These results will provide a foundation for future research on the role of hepatic dysfunction in PTSD pathogenesis

    Boosting Magnetoelectric Effect in Polymer-Based Nanocomposites

    Polymer-based magnetoelectric composite materials have attracted a lot of attention due to their high potential in various types of applications as magnetic field sensors, energy harvesting, and biomedical devices. Current researches are focused on the increase in the efficiency of magnetoelectric transformation. In this work, a new strategy of arrangement of clusters of magnetic nanoparticles by an external magnetic field in PVDF and PFVD-TrFE matrixes is proposed to increase the voltage coefficient (alpha ME) of the magnetoelectric effect. Another strategy is the use of 3-component composites through the inclusion of piezoelectric BaTiO3 particles. Developed strategies allow us to increase the alpha ME value from similar to 5 mV/cm.Oe for the composite of randomly distributed CoFe2O4 nanoparticles in PVDF matrix to similar to 18.5 mV/cm.Oe for a composite of magnetic particles in PVDF-TrFE matrix with 5%wt of piezoelectric particles. The applicability of such materials as bioactive surface is demonstrated on neural crest stem cell cultures

    Prophylactic thyroidectomy results among RET germline mutation bearers in families with hereditary forms of medullary thyroid cancer

    Genetically caused medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is associated with unfavorable survival prognosis, so it makes necessary to develop new diagnostic techniques to reveal pre-clinical stage of disease as well as to introduce into clinical practice the effective method of tumor prevention. The article represents first in Russia summary clinical experience of prophylactic thyroidectomy have been executed in the period 1998 – 2015 yeas among ten bearers of RET gene germlinemutation in families with hereditary disease including syndrome MEN2A and familial MTC. Aim: to evaluate the results of surgical treatment of asymptomatic carriers of germinal mutations in the RET gene. Materials and methods. In the period from 1998 to 2015, in two centers: N.N. Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center, Moscow and A. Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Centre – branch of the National Medical Research Radiological Centre, Obninsk was conducted prophylactic surgical treatment in 10 patients – asymptomatic carriers of germinal mutations in RET. Age of patients – from 2 to 23 years old. 9 patients – from families with the syndrome of multiple endocrineneoplasia type 2A (MEN2A), one – with the family of MTC. According to genealogy in 9 families of patients there have been cases of death from MTC or pheochromocytoma (PC). In all cases, surgical treatment was performed in a volume of TE, two patients additionally performed lymph node dissection VI level. The observation period after surgery ranged from 6 months to 16 years. Results. DNA diagnostics in 8 patients identified a mutation in exon 11, in one case – in exon 10 and one patient had revealed two mutations in exons 13 and 14. The age of patients ranged from 2 to 23 years. Basal calcitonin level was elevated in 7 of 10 patients. Such prophylactic TE in 2 patients was supplemented by selective lymph node dissection. Histological examination of the removal of the thyroid gland (TG) revealed foci of medullary cancer in 6 of 10. At 2 patients revealed a C-cell hyperplasia and at 2 patients were found signs of the well expressed and weakly expressed sclerosis in thyroid tissue. The earliest age to identify MTC was a child 3 years old, mutations in codon 634, from a family where relatives observed for aggressive MTC. In the course of follow-recurrence was detected in one patient, a child of 15 years, a similar mutation carrier. Conclusion. In view of the risk of MTC developing identifying a mutation in RET gene and preventive TE should be carried out as soon as possible. The high risk of MTC developing in RET-gene positive subjects was confirmed in this study (6 cases of cancer from 10 patients)
