    Stock Market Reaction To Chief Marketing Officer Appointment Announcements

    This paper investigates the stock price performance of 166 firms appointing a new Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) between 1999 and 2005. Following event study methodology, the results reveal that abnormal stock returns around the appointment day are greater for firms appointing a CMO with prior marketing executive experience, in firms where the new CMO explains the intended future marketing strategy on the appointment announcement day, whereas it is lower in firms operating in higher growth, high technology industries with higher product differentiation. Announcement-induced returns are also greater for firms that experienced poor stock price performance in the year leading to the appointment. Taken together, the results suggest that the market’s assessment of a change in marketing leadership should not be viewed as being uniformly beneficial, but should be assessed against the profile of the appointee and the appointing firm

    Account manager turnover and the influence of context: An exploratory study

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the contextual factors that influence the impact of account manager turnover on the client–agency relationship, an under-researched area of relationship management literature. A case study approach and one-to-one interviews are used to conduct the exploratory study, analysing client–agency relationships within the UK design industry. A conceptual framework covering individual and organisational characteristics is used to examine the contextual factors impacting account manager turnover. The findings identify both organisational and individual contextual factors that influence the outcome of turnover. Categorized into three core contexts (client-specific knowledge, multiple relationship ties, and turnover process management), factors such as agency structure and culture, agency knowledge management policies, and client experience were all found to impact on account manager turnover.With regard to practical implications, account manager turnover does not necessarily mean the end of the client–service firm relationship. Agencies can create contexts that mitigate the potential negative effects. Small firms appear to have advantages inherent in their size, but larger firms can take steps to emulate some of the conditions found in micro firms

    Migration matters : the experience of United Kingdom registered nurses migrating to Western Australia

    This qualitative study uses heuristic inquiry to investigate the unique journey of 21 registered nurses (RN) who migrated from the United Kingdom (UK) to Perth in Western Australia (WA) between 2003 and 2008. The study explores the reasons for migration as well as the professional, social and psychological impact on each participant and their accompanying family during the first two years of settling in a new country. In the contemporary climate of international nurse mobility, many employers are attempting to attract new employees, often with tantalising offers of an immediate visa and the enticement of a better climate and standard of living. Migration is costly financially and socially, with many nurses finding that the dream does not live up to the reality. The purpose of this study is to search for the essence of the phenomenon of migration for RNs from the UK moving to WA, including the psychological and sociocultural adaptation experienced by the participants. With the focus being to capture the experience of UK migrant nurses in WA, heuristic inquiry was chosen as the research methodology, offering the researcher an opportunity to be included in the study due to personal experience as an RN migrating to WA in 2003. The professional and personal challenges faced by the participants are examined in detail and offer an insight into the complicated and often frustrating process faced by UK nurses when migrating to WA. Three main themes were uncovered during the heuristic process: (a) making the move: finding a way; (b) new life: fitting in; and (c) here to stay. Heuristic inquiry encouraged the development of a creative synthesis to represent the whole experience and resulted in my distinctive representation, Nurse migration: A model for success. This model is underpinned by the theoretical framework used to support the research, the work of Kingma who identified the main push and pull factors affecting the decision of nurses to migrate. Three main coping strategies identified in this study were: (a) developing resilience; (b) finding a new professional identity; and (c) having the ability to adapt to a new life. Feelings of belonging were found to be necessary to make the move a success, with the need for new friends and a replacement family being a high priority for all participants. This study also highlighted many issues that need to be considered by future UK migrant nurses before embarking on such a massive upheaval to their professional and personal life. Policy makers and Australian employers must consider the total impact of migration upon the nurses they employ and investigate how they can improve conditions that may allow them to “live the dream” both professionally and personally

    Resource integration for co-creation between marketing agencies and clients

Purpose: Resource integration is a central idea within service-dominant logic (S-D logic), but there has been little scholarly research on this aspect of theory. This paper aims to explore resource integration between marketing agencies and their clients. Design/methodology/approach: In total, nine case studies have been developed using a dyadic approach of interviewing clients and members of their agency teams. This is followed-up with presentations and workshops with over 200 practitioners who validated the findings and added new perspectives. Findings: The key operant resources in the client/agency context have been identified. The ways the operant resources of the actors developed during the course of resource integration, building potential resources for future co-creation are shown. The differing perspectives of the actors to each other’s contribution are highlighted. Research limitations/implications: This study suggests that resource enhancement and development, as a result of integration, is important. For agency/client research, resource integration and development brings new perspectives complementing existing relationship approaches to research. The findings have implications for relationship marketing theory across business-to-business (B2B) contexts. Practical implications: The findings suggest a resource integration approach that could be jointly addressed between agency and client in improving the way they work together. The discourse of co-creation suggests a way for them to talk about how to work together effectively. Suggestions are made for teaching. Originality/value: This study develops the S-D logic theory through exploring resource enhancement and development in a B2B co-creation context. The dyadic nature of the research is novel in studying how marketing agencies and clients work together and new perspectives emerge from the approach

    Low-frequency dipolar excitation of a perfect ellipsoidal conductor

    International audienceThis paper deals with the scattering by a perfectly conductive ellipsoid under magnetic dipolar excitation at low frequency. The source and the ellipsoid are embedded in an infinite homogeneous conducting ground. The main idea is to obtain an analytical solution of this scattering problem in order to have a fast numerical estimation of the scattered field that can be useful for real data inversion. Maxwell equations and boundary conditions, describing the problem, are firstly expanded using low-frequency expansion of the fields up to order three. It will be shown that fields have to be found incrementally. The static one (term of order zero) satisfies the Laplace equation. The next non-zero term (term of order two) is more complicated and satisfies the Poisson equation. The order-three term is independent of the previous ones and is described by the Laplace equation. They constitute three different scattering problems that are solved using the separated variables method in the ellipsoidal coordinate system. Solutions are written as expansions on the few analytically known scalar ellipsoidal harmonics. Details are given to explain how those solutions are achieved with an example of numerical results

    Cultivating care: Nurturing Nurses for a New Tomorrow

    In large academic institutions, students often feel very lost, confused, lonely, and anxious or even a fraud at being there. At Edith Cowan University in Western Australia, researchers identified a gap in provision for Nursing Students which addresses these concerns. This study used a qualitative case study utilising rich narrative and aesthetic expression to explore and describe the experiences of both student mentees and academic mentors over the trajectory of the student’s Bachelor Degree programme. Findings emerging show students both want and need academic mentorship but the form upon which that takes is highly individual and changeable as the individuals professional competence and confidence increases; and as a positive and mutually accountable relationship is formed between the parties. While there is overwhelming empirical evidence to support mentorship for students in academic institutions and mentorship for newly Registered Nurses, a paucity of literature exploring academic mentorship of student nurses exists. This research aims to contribute to an emerging yet vital body of knowledge surrounding the notions of support and nurturing of health professionals of the future. A philosophical model proposed by the researchers has been identified as the foundation for this research and will also be explored within this paper

    Rural dialysis nurses’ experiences with challenging patients: a thematic qualitative analysis

    Background: This study explored the experience of nurses encountering challenging patient behaviour while working at a rural hospital-based haemodialysis unit. Methods: Focus groups were conducted with haemodialysis nurses at a rural hospital. Five participants across two focus groups were asked questions regarding their experiences of challenging patients, including impacts that the experiences may have had on their ongoing professional practice. Transcripts of the focus groups were analysed thematically. Findings: Three themes arose from the focus group discussion – experiencing challenging behaviour, long-term relationships with patients, and nursing professionalism. Participants described challenges arising when caring for patients who were aggressive, did not comply with self-management, or caused avoidable logistical challenges. Long-term caring relationships presented challenges as patients could become emotionally dependent upon one nurse, making it difficult to share workloads with other nurses. Participants reported decreased confidence, being near tears, being angry, and experiencing ‘burnout’ when caring for patients with difficult behaviour over extended periods. Participants managed challenging behaviours by identifying triggers, allocating staff to specific patients, and trying to understand the patient’s motivation for action. ‘Not taking work home’ and ‘not taking things personally’ were ways in which nurses attempted to look after their own wellbeing, although this was not always possible. Participants stressed the importance of working as a team and having supportive management and inter-professional relationships.Significance Participants’ perceptions of working in the nursing profession were more related to their ability to work as a team and manage challenging behaviour exhibited by patients in a supportive environment than the presence of patients exhibiting challenging behaviour

    Revisiting the Low-Frequency Dipolar Perturbation by an Impenetrable Ellipsoid in a Conductive Surrounding

    This contribution deals with the scattering by a metallic ellipsoidal target, embedded in a homogeneous conductive medium, which is stimulated when a 3D time-harmonic magnetic dipole is operating at the low-frequency realm. The incident, the scattered, and the total three-dimensional electromagnetic fields, which satisfy Maxwell’s equations, yield low-frequency expansions in terms of positive integral powers of the complex-valued wave number of the exterior medium. We preserve the static Rayleigh approximation and the first three dynamic terms, while the additional terms of minor contribution are neglected. The Maxwell-type problem is transformed into intertwined potential-type boundary value problems with impenetrable boundary conditions, whereas the environment of a genuine ellipsoidal coordinate system provides the necessary setting for tackling such problems in anisotropic space. The fields are represented via nonaxisymmetric infinite series expansions in terms of harmonic eigenfunctions, affiliated with the ellipsoidal system, obtaining analytical closed-form solutions in a compact fashion. Until nowadays, such problems were attacked by using the very few ellipsoidal harmonics exhibiting an analytical form. In the present article, we address this issue by incorporating the full series expansion of the potentials and utilizing the entire subspace of ellipsoidal harmonic eigenfunctions

    On the Perturbation of the Three-Dimensional Stokes Flow of Micropolar Fluids by a Constant Uniform Magnetic Field in a Circular Cylinder

    Modern engineering technology involves the micropolar magnetohydrodynamic flow of magnetic fluids. Here, we consider a colloidal suspension of non-conductive ferromagnetic material, which consists of small spherical particles that behave as rigid magnetic dipoles, in a carrier liquid of approximately zero conductivity and low-Reynolds number properties. The interaction of a 3D constant uniform magnetic field with the three-dimensional steady creeping motion (Stokes flow) of a viscous incompressible micropolar fluid in a circular cylinder is investigated, where the magnetization of the ferrofluid has been taken into account and the magnetic Stokes partial differential equations have been presented. Our goal is to apply the proper boundary conditions, so as to obtain the flow fields in a closed analytical form via the potential representation theory, and to study several characteristics of the flow. In view of this aim, we make use of an improved new complete and unique differential representation of magnetic Stokes flow, valid for non-axisymmetric geometries, which provides the velocity and total pressure fields in terms of easy-to-find potentials. We use these results to simulate the creeping flow of a magnetic fluid inside a circular duct and to obtain the flow fields associated with this kind of flow
