    Preliminary characterization of some Streptomyces species isolated from a composting process and their antimicrobial potential

    Abstract The aim of this study was to screen Streptomycetes isolates with antimicrobial and antiviral activity, in a search for new metabolites. The isolates were obtained from a composting process, and identified based on morphological characteristics and molecular biological methods. The antimicrobial activity was determined using the double-layer agar method against 53 test organisms (bacteria, yeasts, and filamentous fungi). All isolates were grown in submerged culture, in mineral salts-starch-casein (SC) broth and ISP2 media, and the filtrate cultures were used in the assays for antibacterial and antiviral activity. Bovine Herpes virus (BoHV-I) was used for the antiviral activity. The morphological and molecular characteristics confirmed that all 25 isolates belonged to the genus Streptomyces. In the assay for antimicrobial activity, 80% of the Streptomyces isolates were able to inhibit at least one of the test organisms. Of these, 80% were active against bacteria and 45% against fungi. Eight of the isolates showed a broad spectrum of inhibitory activity; of these, the isolate Streptomyces spp. 1S was able to inhibit 46 of the test organisms, and, most importantly, the 16 Gramnegative strains were inhibited. Of the 25 isolates, 44.4% of the isolates were able to grow and produce bioactive metabolites when grown in submerged culture. Four extracts showed a cytopathic effect in 10 CCID 50 MDBK cell, even though no viricidal effect was observed.     The Dark Matter Distribution in the Central Regions of Galaxy Clusters: Implications for CDM

    We have undertaken a spectroscopic survey of gravitational arcs in a carefully chosen sample of six clusters each containing a dominant brightest cluster galaxy. We use these systems to study the relative distributions of dark and baryonic material in the central regions. Three clusters present both radial and tangential arcs and provide particularly strong constraints on the mass profiles, whereas the other three display only tangential arcs and act as a control set. We analyze stellar velocity dispersion data for the brightest cluster galaxies in conjunction with the arc redshifts and lens models to constrain the dark and baryonic mass profiles jointly. For the systems containing radial arcs we find that the inner dark matter density profile is consistent with a 3-D distribution, rho_{DM} propto r^-beta, with logarithmic slope =0.52^{+0.05}_{-0.05} (68% CL). Similarly, we find that the tangential arc sample gives an upper limit, beta<0.57 (99% CL). Taking the 6 clusters together, the mean dark matter distribution is quite inconsistent with the standard Navarro, Frenk & White (1997) value, beta=1.0, at >99% confidence. In addition, we find considerable cosmic scatter in the beta (Delta beta ~0.3) values of the radial arc sample. We find no evidence that systems with radial arcs preferentially yield flatter dark matter profiles as might be expected if they were a biased subset. We discuss the validity of our 1-D mass reconstruction method and verify its conclusions by comparing with results of a more rigorous ray-tracing lensing code. Our results extend and strengthen the earlier conclusions presented by Sand et al. (2002) and suggest the relationship between dark and visible matter in the cores of clusters is more complex than anticipated from recent simulations. A atividade antibacteriana dos extratos aquoso e etanólico de Acanthospermum australe (Loefl.) O. Kuntze foi avaliada frente às bactérias Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538P) e Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), pelo método de difusão em Agar. Foi observada a inibição de crescimento destes microrganismos por ambos os extratos, nas concentrações testadas. Paralelamente, foi realizada a análise fitoquímica dos extratos aquoso e hidroetanólico para a determinação de compostos fenólicos (taninos, flavonoides, ácidos fenólicos e antraquinonas), alcaloides e compostos terpênicos. Os extratos apresentaram perfis qualitativamente semelhantes, apresentando taninos, flavonoides, ácidos fenólicos e compostos terpênicos

    Disentangling Baryons and Dark Matter in the Spiral Gravitational Lens B1933+503

    Measuring the relative mass contributions of luminous and dark matter in spiral galaxies is important for understanding their formation and evolution. The combination of a galaxy rotation curve and strong lensing is a powerful way to break the disk-halo degeneracy that is inherent in each of the methods individually. We present an analysis of the 10-image radio spiral lens B1933+503 at z_l=0.755, incorporating (1) new global VLBI observations, (2) new adaptive-optics assisted K-band imaging, (3) new spectroscopic observations for the lens galaxy rotation curve and the source redshift. We construct a three-dimensionally axisymmetric mass distribution with 3 components: an exponential profile for the disk, a point mass for the bulge, and an NFW profile for the halo. The mass model is simultaneously fitted to the kinematics and the lensing data. The NFW halo needs to be oblate with a flattening of a/c=0.33^{+0.07}_{-0.05} to be consistent with the radio data. This suggests that baryons are effective at making the halos oblate near the center. The lensing and kinematics analysis probe the inner ~10 kpc of the galaxy, and we obtain a lower limit on the halo scale radius of 16 kpc (95% CI). The dark matter mass fraction inside a sphere with a radius of 2.2 disk scale lengths is f_{DM,2.2}=0.43^{+0.10}_{-0.09}. The contribution of the disk to the total circular velocity at 2.2 disk scale lengths is 0.76^{+0.05}_{-0.06}, suggesting that the disk is marginally submaximal. The stellar mass of the disk from our modeling is log_{10}(M_{*}/M_{sun}) = 11.06^{+0.09}_{-0.11} assuming that the cold gas contributes ~20% to the total disk mass.     The Cluster Lensing and Supernova Survey with Hubble (CLASH): Strong Lensing Analysis of Abell 383 from 16-Band HST WFC3/ACS Imaging

    We examine the inner mass distribution of the relaxed galaxy cluster Abell 383 in deep 16-band HST/ACS+WFC3 imaging taken as part of the CLASH multi-cycle treasury program. Our program is designed to study the dark matter distribution in 25 massive clusters, and balances depth with a wide wavelength coverage to better identify lensed systems and generate precise photometric redshifts. This information together with the predictive strength of our strong-lensing analysis method identifies 13 new multiply-lensed images and candidates, so that a total of 27 multiple-images of 9 systems are used to tightly constrain the inner mass profile, dlogΣ/dlogr0.6±0.1d\log \Sigma/d\log r\simeq -0.6\pm 0.1 (r<160 kpc). We find consistency with the standard distance-redshift relation for the full range spanned by the lensed images, 1.01<z<6.03, with the higher redshift sources deflected through larger angles as expected. The inner mass profile derived here is consistent with the results of our independent weak-lensing analysis of wide-field Subaru images, with good agreement in the region of overlap. The overall mass profile is well fitted by an NFW profile with M_{vir}=(5.37^{+0.70}_{-0.63}\pm 0.26) x 10^{14}M_{\odot}/h and a relatively high concentration, c_{vir}=8.77^{+0.44}_{-0.42}\pm 0.23, which lies above the standard c-M relation similar to other well-studied clusters. The critical radius of Abell 383 is modest by the standards of other lensing clusters, r_{E}\simeq16\pm2\arcsec (for z_s=2.55), so the relatively large number of lensed images uncovered here with precise photometric redshifts validates our imaging strategy for the CLASH survey. In total we aim to provide similarly high-quality lensing data for 25 clusters, 20 of which are X-ray selected relaxed clusters, enabling a precise determination of the representative mass profile free from lensing bias.     AN ULTRA-FAINT GALAXY CANDIDATE DISCOVERED in EARLY DATA from the MAGELLANIC SATELLITES SURVEY

    We report a new ultra-faint stellar system found in Dark Energy Camera data from the first observing run of the Magellanic Satellites Survey (MagLiteS). MagLiteS J0644-5953 (Pictor II or Pic II) is a low surface brightness (μ = 28.5+1 -1 mag arcsec-2 within its half-light radius) resolved overdensity of old and metal-poor stars located at a heliocentric distance of 45+5 -4 kpc. The physical size (r1/2 = 46+15 -11) and low luminosity (Mv = -3.2+0.4 -0.5 mag) of this satellite are consistent with the locus of spectroscopically confirmed ultra-faint galaxies. MagLiteS J0644-5953 (Pic II) is located 11.3+3.1 -0.9 kpc from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and comparisons with simulation results in the literature suggest that this satellite was likely accreted with the LMC. The close proximity of MagLiteS J0644-5953 (Pic II) to the LMC also makes it the most likely ultra-faint galaxy candidate to still be gravitationally bound to the LMC.Peer reviewe

    Autonomic and muscular responses and recovery to one-hour laboratory mental stress in healthy subjects

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Stress is a risk factor for musculoskeletal pain. We wanted to explore stress related physiology in healthy subjects in order to gain insight into mechanisms of pain development which may relate to the pathophysiology of musculoskeletal pain disorders.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Continuous blood pressure, heart rate, finger skin blood flow, respiration, surface electromyography together with perception of pain, fatigue and tension were recorded on 35 healthy women and 9 healthy men before, during a 60 minute period with task-related low-grade mental stress, and in the following 30 minute rest period.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Subjects responded physiologically to the stressful task with an increase in trapezius and frontalis muscle activity, increased blood pressure, respiration frequency and heart rate together with reduced finger skin blood flow. The blood pressure response and the finger skin blood flow response did not recover to baseline values during the 30-minute rest period, whereas respiration frequency, heart rate, and surface electromyography of the trapezius and frontalis muscles recovered to baseline within 10 minutes after the stressful task. Sixty-eight percent responded subjectively with pain development and 64% reported at least 30% increase in pain. Reduced recovery of the blood pressure was weakly correlated to fatigue development during stress, but was not correlated to pain or tension.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Based on a lack of recovery of the blood pressure and the acral finger skin blood flow response to mental stress we conclude that these responses are more protracted than other physiological stress responses.</p

    A systematic review of outcome and outcome-measure reporting in randomised trials evaluating surgical interventions for anterior-compartment vaginal prolapse: a call to action to develop a core outcome set

    INTRODUCTION: We assessed outcome and outcome-measure reporting in randomised controlled trials evaluating surgical interventions for anterior-compartment vaginal prolapse and explored the relationships between outcome reporting quality with journal impact factor, year of publication, and methodological quality. METHODS: We searched the bibliographical databases from inception to October 2017. Two researchers independently selected studies and assessed study characteristics, methodological quality (Jadad criteria; range 1-5), and outcome reporting quality Management of Otitis Media with Effusion in Cleft Palate (MOMENT) criteria; range 1-6], and extracted relevant data. We used a multivariate linear regression to assess associations between outcome reporting quality and other variables. RESULTS: Eighty publications reporting data from 10,924 participants were included. Seventeen different surgical interventions were evaluated. One hundred different outcomes and 112 outcome measures were reported. Outcomes were inconsistently reported across trials; for example, 43 trials reported anatomical treatment success rates (12 outcome measures), 25 trials reported quality of life (15 outcome measures) and eight trials reported postoperative pain (seven outcome measures). Multivariate linear regression demonstrated a relationship between outcome reporting quality with methodological quality (β = 0.412; P = 0.018). No relationship was demonstrated between outcome reporting quality with impact factor (β = 0.078; P = 0.306), year of publication (β = 0.149; P = 0.295), study size (β = 0.008; P = 0.961) and commercial funding (β = -0.013; P = 0.918). CONCLUSIONS: Anterior-compartment vaginal prolapse trials report many different outcomes and outcome measures and often neglect to report important safety outcomes. Developing, disseminating and implementing a core outcome set will help address these issues
