    Volcano–Plutonic Complex of the Tumrok Range (Eastern Kamchatka): An Example of the Ural-Alaskan Type Intrusion and Related Volcanic Series

    Zoned plutons, composed of dunites, pyroxenites, and gabbroic rocks, have been referred to as the Ural-Alaskan type complexes (UA-complexes) and occur in numerous paleo-arc settings worldwide. Many of these complexes are source rocks for economic placers of platinum-group metals. Thus, it is important to understand how UA-complexes form and the origin and behavior of platinum-group elements (PGEs). It is widely assumed that the UA-complexes result from differentiation of supra-subduction high-Ca high-Mg sub-alkaline magmas. However, there is a lack of direct evidence for the existence and differentiation of such magmas, mainly because cases of UA-complexes being spatially and temporally linked to co-genetic volcanics are unknown. We studied an UA-complex from the Tumrok range (Eastern Kamchatka) where a dunite-clinopyroxenite-gabbro assemblage is spatially and temporary related to high-Ca volcanics (i.e., picrites and basalts). Based on the mineral and chemical composition of the rocks, mineral chemistry, and composition of melt inclusions hosted within rock-forming minerals, we conclude that the intrusive assemblage and the volcanics are co-genetic and share the same parental magma of ankaramitic composition. Furthermore, the compositions of the plutonic rocks are typical of UA-complexes worldwide. Finally, the rocks studied exhibit a full differentiation sequence from olivine-only liquidus in picrites and dunites to eutectic crystallization of diopside or hornblende, plagioclase, and K-Na feldspar in plagio-wehrlites and gabbroic rocks. All these results make the considered volcano–plutonic complex a promising case for petrological studies and modelling of UA-complex formation

    Freely decaying weak turbulence for sea surface gravity waves

    We study numerically the generation of power laws in the framework of weak turbulence theory for surface gravity waves in deep water. Starting from a random wave field, we let the system evolve numerically according to the nonlinear Euler equations for gravity waves in infinitely deep water. In agreement with the theory of Zakharov and Filonenko, we find the formation of a power spectrum characterized by a power law of the form of k2.5|{\bf k}|^{-2.5}.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    The July 2010 outburst of the NLS1 PMN J0948+0022

    We report about the multiwavelength campaign on the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) Galaxy PMN J0948+0022 (z = 0.5846) performed in 2010 July-September and triggered by high activity as measured by Fermi/LAT. The peak luminosity in the 0.1-100 GeV energy band exceeded, for the first time in this type of source, the value of 10^48 erg/s, a level comparable to the most powerful blazars. The comparison of the spectral energy distribution of the NLS1 PMN J0948+0022 with that of a typical blazar - like 3C 273 - shows that the power emitted at gamma rays is extreme.Comment: 2011 Fermi Symposium proceedings - eConf C11050

    Enhanced empirical data for the fundamental diagram and the flow through bottlenecks

    In recent years, several approaches for modelling pedestrian dynamics have been proposed and applied e.g. for design of egress routes. However, so far not much attention has been paid to their 'quantitative' validation. This unsatisfactory situation belongs amongst others on the uncertain and contradictory experimental data base. The fundamental diagram, i.e. the density-dependence of the flow or velocity, is probably the most important relation as it connects the basic parameter to describe the dynamic of crowds. But specifications in different handbooks as well as experimental measurements differ considerably. The same is true for the bottleneck flow. After a comprehensive review of the experimental data base we give an survey of a research project, including experiments with up to 250 persons performed under well controlled laboratory conditions. The trajectories of each person are measured in high precision to analyze the fundamental diagram and the flow through bottlenecks. The trajectories allow to study how the way of measurement influences the resulting relations. Surprisingly we found large deviation amongst the methods. These may be responsible for the deviation in the literature mentioned above.     Gamma-ray blazars: the view from AGILE

    During the first 3 years of operation the Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector onboard the AGILE satellite detected several blazars in a high gamma-ray activity: 3C 279, 3C 454.3, PKS 1510-089, S5 0716+714, 3C 273, W Comae, Mrk 421, PKS 0537-441 and 4C +21.35. Thanks to the rapid dissemination of our alerts, we were able to obtain multiwavelength data from other observatories such as Spitzer, Swift, RXTE, Suzaku, INTEGRAL, MAGIC, VERITAS, and ARGO as well as radio-to-optical coverage by means of the GASP Project of the WEBT and the REM Telescope. This large multifrequency coverage gave us the opportunity to study the variability correlations between the emission at different frequencies and to obtain simultaneous spectral energy distributions of these sources from radio to gamma-ray energy bands, investigating the different mechanisms responsible for their emission and uncovering in some cases a more complex behaviour with respect to the standard models.     Breast cancer (BC) is a heterogeneous disease characterized by the presence or absence of membrane receptor overexpression on tumor cells that correlates with the disease prognosis. Understanding of the patterns and mechanisms of tumor progression gained through clinical experience of managing BC patients is important. The treatment strategy depends on the hormone receptor status of the tumor, the HER2 / neu expression, and the proliferative activity level. A clinical case of advanced luminal A breast cancer is reported, and the rationale for sequential treatment strategy is provided taking into account the clinical situation and clinical course of the disease. Adequate endocrine therapy for hormone-positive metastatic BC provides long-term tumor control like in this case, as well as a high quality of life over the entire course of sequential treatment with anticancer drugs.Рак молочной железы (РМЖ) — гетерогенное заболевание, для которого характерно наличие или отсутствие гиперэкспрессии рецепторов на поверхности опухолевых клеток, что коррелирует с прогнозом заболевания. Важным является понимание особенностей и механизмов опухолевой прогрессии, полученное, в том числе, из клинического опыта ведения пациентов с РМЖ. Исходя из гормонального статуса опухоли, наличия или отсутствия экспрессии рецепторов HER2/neu, а также уровня пролиферативной активности определяется тактика лечения. В статье представлено описание клинического случая пациентки с распространенным люминальным А подтипом РМЖ, обоснована последовательная стратегия лечения с учетом клинической ситуации и особенностей течения заболевания. Рациональное назначение эндокринотерапии при гормоноположительном метастатическом РМЖ позволяет достичь длительного контроля над опухолью. На клиническом примере при последовательном назначении противоопухолевых лекарственных препаратов достигнут длительный контроль над опухолью и высокое качество жизни на протяжении всего периода лечения

    The first gamma-ray outburst of a Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy: the case of PMN J0948+0022 in July 2010

    We report on a multiwavelength campaign on the radio-loud Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) Galaxy PMN J0948+0022 (z=0.5846) performed in 2010 July-September and triggered by a high-energy gamma-ray outburst observed by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The peak flux in the 0.1-100 GeV energy band exceeded, for the first time in this type of source, the value of 10^-6 ph cm^-2 s^-1, corresponding to an observed luminosity of 10^48 erg s^-1. Although the source was too close to the Sun position to organize a densely sampled follow-up, it was possible to gather some multiwavelength data that confirmed the state of high activity across the sampled electromagnetic spectrum. The comparison of the spectral energy distribution of the NLS1 PMN J0948+0022 with that of a typical blazar - like 3C 273 - shows that the power emitted at gamma rays is extreme.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables.
