    Distributed key man-agement in dynamic outsourced databases: A trie-based approach

    Abstract The decision to outsource databases is strategic in many organizations due to the increasing costs of internally managing large volumes of information. The sensitive nature of this information raises the need for powerful mechanisms to protect it against unauthorized disclosure. Centralized encryption to access control at the data owner level has been proposed as one way of handling this issue. However, its prohibitive costs renders it impractical and inflexible. A distributed cryptographic approach has been suggested as a promising alternative, where keys are distributed to users on the basis of their assigned privileges. But in this case, key management becomes problematic in the face of frequent database updates and remains an open issue. In this paper, we present a novel approach based on Binary Tries 1 . By exploiting the intrinsic properties of these data structures, key management complexity, and thus its cost, is significantly reduced. Changes to the Binary Trie structure remain limited in the face of frequent updates. Preliminary experimental analysis demonstrates the validity and the effectiveness of our approach

    Global Sampling of the Photochemical Reaction Paths of Bromoform by Ultrafast Deep-UV Through Near-IR Transient Absorption and ab initio Multiconfigurational Calculations

    Ultrafast deep-ultraviolet through near infrared (210-950 nm) transient absorption spectroscopy complemented by ab initio multiconfigurational calculations offers a global description of the photochemical reaction pathways of bromoform following 255-nm excitation in methylcyclohexane and acetonitrile solutions. Photoexcitation of CHBr3 leads to the ground-state iso-CHBr3 product in a large quantum yield (∼35), formed through two different mechanisms: concerted excited-state isomerization and cage-induced isomerization through the recombination of the nascent radical pair. These two processes take place on different time scales of tens of femtoseconds and several picoseconds, respectively. The novel ultrafast direct isomerization pathway proposed herein is consistent with the occurrence of a conical intersection between the first excited singlet state of CHBr3 and the ground electronic state of iso-CHBr3. Complete active space self-consistent field calculations characterize this singularity in the vicinity of a second order saddle point on the ground state which connects the two isomer forms. For cage-induced isomerization, both the formation of the nascent radical pair and its subsequent collapse into ground-state iso-CHBr3 are directly monitored through the deep-ultraviolet absorption signatures of the radical species. In both mechanisms, the optically active (i.e., those with largest Franck-Condon factors) C-Br-Br bending and Br-Br stretching modes of ground-state iso-CHBr3 have the largest projection on the reaction coordinate, enabling us to trace the structural changes accompanying vibrational relaxation of the non-equilibrated isomers through transient absorption dynamics. The iso-CHBr3 photoproduct is stable in methylcyclohexane, but undergoes either facile thermal isomerization to the parent CHBr3 structure through a cyclic transition state stabilized by the polar acetonitrile medium (∼300-ps lifetime), and hydrolysis in the presence of water. © 2013 American Institute of Physics

    GHz detection rates and dynamic photon-number resolution with superconducting nanowire arrays

    Superconducting-nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) have enabled the realization of several quantum optics technologies thanks to their high detection efficiency, low dark-counts, and fast recovery time. However, the widespread use of technologies such as linear optical quantum computing (LOQC), quasi-deterministic single photon sources and quantum repeaters requires faster detectors that can distinguish between different photon number states. Here, we report the fabrication of an SNSPD array composed of 14 independent pixels, achieving a system detection efficiency (SDE) of 90% in the telecom band. By reading each pixel of the array independently we show that the detector can detect telecom photons at 1.5 GHz with 45% absolute SDE. We exploit the dynamic PNR of the array to demonstrate accurate state reconstruction for different photon-number statistics for a wide range of light inputs, including operation with long-duration light pulses, as commonly obtained with some cavity-based sources. We show 2-photon and 3-photon fidelities of 74% and 57% respectively, which represent state-of-the-art results for fiber-coupled SNSPDs

    Human genetic variation, Sport and Exercise Medicine, and Achilles tendinopathy: role for angiogenesis-associated genes

    Sport and Exercise Medicine is one of the important subspecialties of 21st century healthcare contributing to improving the physical function, health, and vitality of populations while reducing the prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases. Moreover, sport and exercise are associated with injuries such as Achilles tendinopathy, which is a common tendon injury. The angiogenesis-associated signaling pathway plays a key role in extracellular matrix remodeling, with increased levels of angiogenic cytokines reported after cyclic stretching of tendon fibroblasts. We investigated the variants in angiogenesis genes in relation to the risk of Achilles tendinopathy in two population samples drawn independently from South Africa (SA) and the United Kingdom (UK). The study sample comprised 120 SA and 130 UK healthy controls, and 108 SA and 87 UK participants with Achilles tendinopathy. All participants were genotyped for five functional polymorphisms in the vascular endothelial growth factor, A isoform (VEGFA) (rs699947, rs1570360, rs2010963) and kinase insert-domain receptor (KDR) genes (rs1870377, rs2071559). The VEGFA A-G-G inferred haplotype was associated with an increased risk of Achilles tendinopathy in the SA group (15% in controls vs. 20% in cases, p = 0.048) and the combined SA+UK group (14% in controls vs. 20% in cases, p = 0.009). These new findings implicate the VEGFA gene with Achilles tendinopathy risk, while highlighting the potential biological significance of the angiogenesis signaling pathway in the etiology of Achilles tendinopathy. The evidence suggesting a genetic contribution to the susceptibility of sustaining a tendon injury is growing. We anticipate that high-throughput and multi-omics approaches, building on genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, may soon uncover the pathophysiology of many diseases in the field of Sports and Exercise Medicine, as a new frontier of global precision medicine

    Fast Single Photon Detectors and real-time Key Distillation: Enabling High Secret Key Rate QKD Systems

    Quantum Key Distribution has made continuous progress over the last 20 years and is now commercially available. However, the secret key rates (SKR) are still limited to a few Mbps. Here, we present a custom multipixel superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors and fast acquisition and real-time key distillation electronics, removing two roadblocks and allowing an increase of the SKR of more than an order of magnitude. In combination with a simple 2.5 GHz clocked time-bin quantum key distribution system, we can generate secret keys at a rate of 64 Mbps over a distance of 10.0 km and at a rate of 3.0 Mbps over a distance of 102.4 km with real-time key distillation.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Nature Photonic

    Modeling of non-stationary accretion disks in X-ray novae A 0620-00 and GRS 1124-68 during outburst

    We address the task of modeling soft X-ray and optical light curves of X-ray novae in the high/soft state. The analytic model of viscous evolution of an externally truncated accretion \alpha-disk is used. Relativistic effects near a Kerr black hole and self-irradiation of an accretion disk are taken into account. The model is applied to the outbursts of X-ray nova Monocerotis 1975 (A 0620-00) and X-ray nova Muscae 1991 (GRS 1124-68). Comparison of observational data with the model yields constraints on the angular momentum (the Kerr parameter) of the black holes in A 0620-00 and GRS 1124-68: 0.3-0.6 and \leq 0.4, and on the viscosity parameter \alpha of the disks: 0.7-0.95 and 0.55-0.75. We also conclude that the accretion disks should have an effective geometrical thickness 1.5-2 times greater than the theoretical value of the distance between the photometric layers.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in A&A (minor changens following the referee's comments, five references added

    Modelling vehicles acceleration during overtaking manoeuvres

    [EN] Abstract: Overtaking manoeuvre is a key issue for two-lane rural roads. These roads should provide sufficient overtaking sight distance (OSD) at certain locations to allow faster vehicles to pass slower ones. However, overtaking requires occupying the opposing lane, which represents a serious safety concern. Severity of overtaking related crashes is very high, compared with other manoeuvres. The development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for overtaking is being a complex task. Only few systems have been developed, but are not still in use. This research incorporated accurate data of real manoeuvres to improve the knowledge of the phenomenon. The trajectory of the overtaking vehicles on the left lane was observed. An instrumented vehicle measured the overtaking time and distance, the abreast position, and the initial and final speed of 180 drivers that passed it during a field experiment. Six different kinematic models (such as uniform acceleration or linear variation of acceleration) were calibrated. Generally, drivers started to accelerate before changing to the opposing lane.     Polymorphisms within the COL5A1 gene and regulators of the extracellular matrix modify the risk of Achilles tendon pathology in a British case control study

    Several genetic loci have been associated with risk of Achilles tendon pathology (ATP) within South African and Australian populations. The aim of this study was, therefore, to evaluate eight previously implicated genetic variants in an independent British population. A total of 130 asymptomatic controls (CON) and 112 participants clinically diagnosed with ATP comprising 87 individuals with chronic Achilles tendinopathy (TEN) and 25 with Achilles tendon ruptures (RUP) were included. All participants were genotyped for variants within the COL5A1, MIR608, IL-1β, IL-6 and CASP8 genes. Primary findings implicated COL5A1 and CASP8. Three inferred allele combinations constructed from COL5A1 rs12722, rs3196378 and rs71746744 were identified as risk modifiers. The T–C–D combination was associated with increased risk of ATP (P = 0.023) and RUP (P < 0.001), the C–A–I combination was associated with increased risk of ATP (P = 0.011), TEN (P = 0.011) and RUP (P = 0.011) and the C–C–D combination was associated with decreased risk of ATP (P = 0.011) and RUP (P = 0.004). The CASP8 rs3834129 DD genotype was associated with decreased risk of TEN (P = 0.020, odds ratio: 0.45, 95% confidence interval: 0.22–0.90) and the CASP8 I–G (rs3834129–rs1045485) inferred allele combination was associated with increased risk of TEN (P = 0.031). This study further highlights the importance of polymorphisms within COL5A1 and CASP8 in the aetiology of ATP
