Observational detection of eight mutual eclipses and occultations between the satellites of Uranus
We carried out observations, with five different instruments ranging in
aperture from 0.4m to 10m, of the satellites of Uranus during that planet's
2007 Equinox. Our observations covered specific intervals of time when mutual
eclipses and occultations were predicted.
The observations were carried out in the near-infrared part of the spectrum
to mitigate the glare from the planet. Frames were acquired at rates > 1/min.
Following modelling and subtraction of the planetary source from these frames,
differential aperture photometry was carried out on the satellite pairs
involved in the predicted events. In all cases but one, nearby bright
satellites were used as reference sources.
We have obtained fifteen individual lightcurves, eight of which show a clear
drop in the flux from the satellite pair, indicating that a mutual event took
place. Three of these involve the faint satellite Miranda. All eight
lightcurves were model-fitted to yield best estimates of the time of maximum
flux drop and the impact parameter. In three cases best-fit albedo ratios were
also derived. We used these estimates to generate intersatellite astrometric
positions with typical formal uncertainties of <0.01 arcsec, several times
better than conventional astrometry of these satellites. The statistics of our
estimated event midtimes show a systematic lag, with the observations later
than predictions. In addition, lightcurves of two partial eclipses of Miranda
show no statistically significant evidence of a light drop, at variance with
the predictions. These indicate that new information about the Uranian
satellite system is contained in observations of mutual events acquired here

Universality of Performance Indicators based on Citation and Reference Counts
We find evidence for the universality of two relative bibliometric indicators
of the quality of individual scientific publications taken from different data
sets. One of these is a new index that considers both citation and reference
counts. We demonstrate this universality for relatively well cited publications
from a single institute, grouped by year of publication and by faculty or by
department. We show similar behaviour in publications submitted to the arXiv
e-print archive, grouped by year of submission and by sub-archive. We also find
that for reasonably well cited papers this distribution is well fitted by a
lognormal with a variance of around 1.3 which is consistent with the results of
Radicchi, Fortunato, and Castellano (2008). Our work demonstrates that
comparisons can be made between publications from different disciplines and
publication dates, regardless of their citation count and without expensive
access to the whole world-wide citation graph. Further, it shows that averages
of the logarithm of such relative bibliometric indices deal with the issue of
long tails and avoid the need for statistics based on lengthy ranking

Author Self-Citation in the General Medicine Literature
Background: Author self-citation contributes to the overall citation count of an article and the impact factor of the journal in which it appears. Little is known, however, about the extent of self-citation in the general clinical medicine literature. The objective of this study was to determine the extent and temporal pattern of author self-citation and the article characteristics associated with author self-citation. Methodology/Principal Findings: We performed a retrospective cohort study of articles published in three high impact general medical journals (JAMA, Lancet, and New England Journal of Medicine) between October 1, 1999 and March 31, 2000. We retrieved the number and percentage of author self-citations received by the article since publication, as of June 2008, from the Scopus citation database. Several article characteristics were extracted by two blinded, independent reviewers for each article in the cohort and analyzed in multivariable linear regression analyses. Since publication, author self-citations accounted for 6.5 % (95 % confidence interval 6.3–6.7%) of all citations received by the 328 articles in our sample. Selfcitation peaked in 2002, declining annually thereafter. Studies with more authors, in cardiovascular medicine or infectious disease, and with smaller sample size were associated with more author self-citations and higher percentage of author selfcitation (all p#0.01). Researchers’ publication patterns and their use for author disambiguation
Over the recent years, we are witnessing an increase of the need for advanced bibliometric indicators on individual researchers and research groups, for which author disambiguation is needed. Using the complete population of university professors and researchers in the Canadian province of Québec (N=13,479), of their papers as well as the papers authored by their homonyms, this paper provides evidence of regularities in researchers’ publication patterns. It shows how these patterns can be used to automatically assign papers to individual and remove papers authored by their homonyms. Two types of patterns were found: 1) at the individual researchers’ level and 2) at the level of disciplines. On the whole, these patterns allow the construction of an algorithm that provides assignation information on at least one paper for 11,105 (82.4%) out of all 13,479 researchers—with a very low percentage of false positives (3.2%)
Large Mesopelagic Fishes Biomass and Trophic Efficiency in the Open Ocean
With a current estimate of B1,000 million tons, mesopelagic fishes likely dominate the
world total fishes biomass. However, recent acoustic observations show that mesopelagic
fishes biomass could be significantly larger than the current estimate. Here we combine
modelling and a sensitivity analysis of the acoustic observations from the Malaspina 2010
Circumnavigation Expedition to show that the previous estimate needs to be revised to at
least one order of magnitude higher. We show that there is a close relationship between the
open ocean fishes biomass and primary production, and that the energy transfer efficiency
from phytoplankton to mesopelagic fishes in the open ocean is higher than what is typically
assumed. Our results indicate that the role of mesopelagic fishes in oceanic ecosystems and
global ocean biogeochemical cycles needs to be revised as they may be respiring B10% of
the primary production in deep water
Author disambiguation using multi-aspect similarity indicators
Key to accurate bibliometric analyses is the ability to correctly link individuals to their corpus of work, with an optimal balance between precision and recall. We have developed an algorithm that does this disambiguation task with a very high recall and precision. The method addresses the issues of discarded records due to null data fields and their resultant effect on recall, precision and F-measure results. We have implemented a dynamic approach to similarity calculations based on all available data fields. We have also included differences in author contribution and age difference between publications, both of which have meaningful effects on overall similarity measurements, resulting in significantly higher recall and precision of returned records. The results are presented from a test dataset of heterogeneous catalysis publications. Results demonstrate significantly high average F-measure scores and substantial improvements on previous and stand-alone techniques
Dietary Vitamin D3 Supplements Reduce Demyelination in the Cuprizone Model
Vitamin D is emerging as a probably important environmental risk factor in multiple sclerosis, affecting both susceptibility and disease progression. It is not known to what extent this effect is due to a modulation of peripheral lymphocyte function, or to intrathecal effects of vitamin D. We investigated the effect of dietary vitamin D3 content on de/remyelination in the cuprizone model, which is a well established toxic model of demyelination, with no associated lymphocyte infiltration. The mice received diets either deficient of (<50 IU/kg), or supplemented with low (500 IU/kg), high (6200 IU/kg) or very high (12500 IU/kg) amounts of vit D3. Cuprizone (0.2%) was added to the diet for six weeks, starting two weeks after onset of the experimental diets. Mouse brain tissue was histopathologically evaluated for myelin and oligodendrocyte loss, microglia/macrophage activation, and lymphocyte infiltration after six weeks of cuprizone exposure, and two weeks after discontinuation of cuprizone exposure. High and very high doses of vitamin D3 significantly reduced the extent of white matter demyelination (p = 0.004) and attenuated microglia activation (p = 0.001). No differences in the density of oligodendrocytes were observed between the diet groups. Two weeks after discontinuation of cuprizone exposure, remyelination was only detectable in the white matter of mice receiving diets deficient of or with low vitamin D3 content. In conclusion, high dietary doses of vitamin D3 reduce the extent of demyelination, and attenuate microglia activation and macrophage infiltration in a toxic model of demyelination, independent of lymphocyte infiltration
