    An Alternative Interpretation for the Moduli Fields of the Cosmology Associated to Type IIB Supergravity with Fluxes

    We start with a particular cosmological model derived from type IIB supergravity theory with fluxes, where usually the dilaton is interpreted as a Quintessence field. Instead of that, in this letter we interpret the dilaton as the dark matter of the universe. With this alternative interpretation we find that in this supergravity model gives a similar evolution and structure formation of the universe compared with the Λ\LambdaCDM model in the linear regime of fluctuations of the structure formation. Some free parameters of the theory are fixed using the present cosmological observations. In the non-linear regimen there are some differences between the type IIB supergravity theory with the traditional CDM paradigm. The supergravity theory predicts the formation of galaxies earlier than the CDM and there is no density cusp in the center of galaxies. These differences can distinguish both models and can give a distinctive feature to the phenomenology of the cosmology coming from superstring theory with fluxes.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, references added, minor modifications, typos corrected.     Resistance Evolution to EPSPS Inhibiting Herbicides in False Barley (Hordeum murinum) Harvested in Southern Spain

    A failure of the EPSPS-inhibiting herbicide glyphosate to control several populations of Hordeum murinum subsp. leporinum (or H. murinum) occurred in southern Spain after more than fifteen applications in both crop (olive, orchards, and citrus) and non-crop (dry areas, roadsides and ditches) areas. Eight out of 18 populations studied were resistant (R) to glyphosate with R factors higher than four based on GR50. These populations also had the highest values of LD50 and the lowest levels of shikimic acid accumulation. Two adjuvants tested increased glyphosate efficacy in both susceptible (S) and R populations thanks to better spray foliar retention. Moreover, PS I-, PS II-, and ACCase-inhibiting herbicides, in pre- or post-emergence, proved to be the best chemical alternatives with different sites of action (SoA) to control both S and glyphosate-R populations. This study represents the first report worldwide of glyphosate resistance in H. murinum found in very different crop and non-crop areas from southern Spain.     Diffraction efficiency in reflection holograms stored in photopolymers doped with metallic nanoparticles

    In the last few years, the interest in storing volume holograms in photopolymers has increased enormously due to their applications in industry, the medical field, security, or renewal energy among others. The production of environmentally compatible photopolymers is one of the main focuses of Holography research. In this work, we have studied how to increase the diffraction efficiency of reflection holograms stored in a low-toxicity PVA-based photopolymer called Biophotopol. The holographic material has been doped with different types of nanoparticles (NPs) to achieve an increase in the refractive index modulation during the recording stage. Metallic NPs, obtained by physical and electrochemical methods have been used. The results obtained with all of them have been compared as a function of the concentration used, the size of the NPs, and the stabilization method used for their synthesis. A considerable increase in diffraction efficiency has been achieved by using NPs in the low-toxicity material.     Shrinkage studies and optimization of multiplexed holographic lenses with high diffractive efficiency and wide angular response

    Today, the advancement of optical systems that can harness clean and renewable energy sources is a major focus for researchers and innovators worldwide. As we strive to create a sustainable future, this challenge has become increasingly critical to our success. Fresnel lenses are widely used as traditional concentrators, but they have a small acceptance angle, and the reflective elements need continuous maintenance of the surface reflectivity. Transmitting Holographic Optical Elements (HOEs) are an alternative to conventional lenses because they are more economical and versatile. Their material is usually a flexible photopolymer so that the optical element can be attached to different types of support, depending on whether one type of handling is required or another, and they tend to have low weight and volume, as well as a simple way of manufacturing. In addition, also provide an extended focusing area which helps to protect solar cells from heating damage. A theoretical and experimental study on the shrinkage of multiplexed holographic lenses (MHL) that were stored in a low-toxicity photopolymer was carried out. To accomplish the study, a K-space tool was used. Furthermore, an optimization analysis of the angular distance between peaks was performed.     A qualitative study about immigrant workers’ perceptions of their working conditions in Spain

    Background: Spain has recently become an inward migration country. Little is known about the occupational health of immigrant workers. This study aimed to explore the perceptions that immigrant workers in Spain had of their working conditions. Methods: Qualitative, exploratory, descriptive study. Criterion sampling. Data collected between September 2006 and May 2007 through semi-structured focus groups and individual interviews, with a topic guide. One hundred and fifty-eight immigrant workers (90 men/68 women) from Colombia (n = 21), Morocco (n = 39), sub-Saharan Africa (n = 29), Romania (n = 44) and Ecuador (n = 25), who were authorised (documented) or unauthorised (undocumented) residents in five medium to large cities in Spain. Results: Participants described poor working conditions, low pay and health hazards. Perception of hazards appeared to be related to gender and job sector. Informants were highly segregated into jobs by sex, however, so this issue will need further exploration. Undocumented workers described poorer conditions than documented workers, which they attributed to their documentation status. Documented participants also felt vulnerable because of their immigrant status. Informants believed that deficient language skills, non-transferability of their education and training and, most of all, their immigrant status and economic need left them with little choice but to work under poor conditions. Conclusions: The occupational health needs of immigrant workers must be addressed at the job level, while improving the enforcement of existing health and safety regulations.     Environmental DNA for freshwater fish monitoring: Insights for conservation within a protected area

    Background Many fish species have been introduced in wild ecosystems around the world to provide food or leisure, deliberately or from farm escapes. Some of those introductions have had large ecological effects. The north American native rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792) is one of the most widely farmed fish species in the world. It was first introduced in Spain in the late 19th century for sport fishing (Elvira 1995) and nowadays is used there for both fishing and aquaculture. On the other hand, the European native brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) is catalogued as vulnerable in Spain. Detecting native and invasive fish populations in ecosystem monitoring is crucial, but it may be difficult from conventional sampling methods such as electrofishing. These techniques encompass some mortality, thus are not adequate for some ecosystems as the case of protected areas. Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis is a sensitive and non-invasive method that can be especially useful for rare and low-density species detection and inventory in water bodies. Methods In this study we employed two eDNA based methods (qPCR and nested PCR-RFLP) to detect salmonid species from mountain streams within a protected area, The Biosphere Reserve and Natural Park of Redes (Upper Nalón Basin, Asturias, Northern Spain), where brown trout is the only native salmonid. We also measured some habitat variables to see how appropriate for salmonids the area is. The sampling area is located upstream impassable dams and contains one rainbow trout fish farm. Results Employing qPCR methodology, brown trout eDNA was detected in all the nine sampling sites surveyed, while nested PCR-RFLP method failed to detect it in two sampling points. Rainbow trout eDNA was detected with both techniques at all sites in the Nalón River’ (n1, n2 and n3). Salmonid habitat units and water quality were high from the area studied. Discussion In this study, a high quantity of rainbow trout eDNA was found upstream and downstream of a fish farm located inside a Biosphere Reserve. Unreported escapes from the fish farm are a likely explanation of these results. Since salmonid habitat is abundant and the water quality high, the establishment of rainbow trout populations would be favored should escapes occur. Environmental DNA has here proved to be a valuable tool for species detection in freshwater environments, and the probe-based qPCR highly sensitive technique for detection of scarce species. We would recommend this method for routine monitoring and early detection of introduced species within natural reserves

    Model predictive control for single-phase NPC converters based on optimal switching sequences

    In this paper, a model predictive control (MPC) based on optimal switching sequences (OSSs) for a singlephase grid-connected full-bridge neutral-point-clampled (NPC) power converter is presented. The predictive control algorithm is formulated in terms of OSSs, which was originally proposed to govern three-phase power converters. In this work, the OSS concept is extended to control singlephase power converters. The proposed MPC algorithm belongs to the continuous control set MPC (CCS-MPC) and is able to provide fixed switching frequency while handling system constraints. The proposed algorithm has been experimentally tested in an NPC power converter prototype. Experimental results show the desired fixed switching behavior in the steady state condition and the intrinsic fast dynamic provided by MPC during transients.
